The notable Swiss-based architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron was originally commissioned to design the museum, but resigned in 1999 due to differences in their design and the ultra-safe preferences of the Board of Regents, who wanted to "blend it" with the university's Campus Master Plan. Laredo baker Tony Sanchez embarrassed himself and the Board by presenting to the famous architects a model that showed a "more appropriate design" to the architects. Lawrence Speck, disappointed in the series of events that led to Herzog & de Meuron's resignation, resigned as dean of the School of Architecture. In 2001 Herzog & de Meuron received the Pritzker Prize in Architecture (considered the Nobel Prize in Architecture), a commentary perhaps of the U.T. Board's lack of clear thinking. The Blanton in its final form has been described as "a monument to surplus wealth and deficit taste."
