If they want more people to upgrade from the 50mbps Unlimited NBN plan to the 100, it's simple... Charge less. They're not going to sucker me by charging $10 less than I'm paying now for the first 6 months of a 100 plan, then $10 more after and Im not going to pay $10 more a month for something I already think is wildly overpriced.

This is true, they should charge less and all these 'sign up and get 6 months discounted" are a joke tbh...then again in the NBN eyes if you can afford $70-80 a month for 50mb plan...how can't you afford $90 for 100mb plan? I sort of can't blame them here. Its like someone buying a 60-70k+ plus turbo/performance car but they cant afford to put in 98 octane fuel, and only put in 95 or 91 lol

Its a problem with the government. If the gov wants it that way, they will get it. But if they dont care, nothing will change. I know its like comparing apples and oranges but in malaysia this year they impose another mandatory speed upgrades for fiber. Even if they bicker about 5G for years but fibre still great.
So my internet has gone from 10mbps(minimum plan) on fiber when I was in college to 100mbps in 2018 to 300mbps this year 2024. All in the same plan price.

As someone who works for NBN I can advise you that, increasing your plan will NOT:
    - improve stability
    - cost you less money
    - increase your download/upload speed if you are limited by the copper you are on or the overloaded wireless cell you are on for fixed wireless customers
I would advise only considering a plan increase if you are on fiber to the premesis or if your ISP has completed testing to assure you that significant speed increases are possible on your service type

In the USA this month (March 15, 2024), the FCC changed their definition of the term "broadband" to mean download speeds of 100Mbps and upload speeds of 20Mbps.

Everyone is under assumption that the USA is some kind of broadband paradise... much like Australia, outside of urban areas, your choice is 4g/5g or Starlink. Much of Australia already has 1Gbps NBN avaiable via HFC or FTTP (with FTTC areas offering a free upgrade to fibre drops and FTTN being phased out). I am sorry, but none at home NEEDs more than 1Gbps, the only thing I see lacking now is the 50Mbps upload speed offered on consumer NBN plans.

I'm sorry that you still think it's 2010, but the tech moved on quite a while ago. Just like they thought Australian's wouldn't use netflix. Then news flash, it was simply the lack of availability. Increasing internet infrastructure would be a boon for the country as it has been consistently everywhere, every time. Because they faster and more reliably a country can communicate, the better it can do business and compete in the global marketplace.
So why are you rooting against Australia because new technology scares you? There's a reason why businesses don't want second rate services like Starlink. How do I know? I have to remotely support clients that have them, it's a slide show, or should I say a shit show? Most seem to hate it, wish they had a wire that actually worked.

We discovered a few weeks ago our 5G from Optus was slowing down. We used to get over 100 but it was barely making 15-20. Forget upload completely. We work from home and my husband especially needs reliable connection and speed working in IT. Called to find out why this was happening and Optus told us after some testing and loads of time on the phone that the tower close to us had been decommissioned and that the closest tower was over a hill in the next city. Optus didn't tell any of their customers here. Not a peep. They offered a slower speed plan for the same cost we originally signed up for. We told them to kick rocks and switched to Exetel. I'd never go back to Optus. Way too much run around and lack of communication.

      2. Please post your reference to the data showing creatives only make up 5% of the market.
It’s also not just creatives, it’s consumers who want to perform large cloud backups, cloud sync large photos libraries containing RAW photos and videos.
I am not asking for symmetrical speed (which NZ and many other countries offer), just higher upload speeds in consumer plans.
Also the NBN wants more uptake on faster plans.

@@SavageChip810 I kind of preferred capped, that way I would not get any surprise bills for excess data, not that I've ever bumped into their limits. They keep extending them just in time for me finding reason to use more.
Yes it could be a bit cheaper, however it's near half what I used to pay pre NBN, now the wife can sit on the land line all day yaking to her mother and it costs no more as it's now voip and unless I call overseas (which I don't) that part is kind of free.

I was on the Home 100/20 CGNAT plan and discovered you can increase your upload from 20 to 40 UP as I've done on the home plan. However these 40 UP plans are often hiding on the provider pages. The extra upload speed does come at a significant price increase of up to $15 /m with a static IP extra cost of $5/m. Upload speeds needed for uploading videos to UA-cam or downloading from your home NAS via the Internet. (Home NAS Equiv Upload speed is limiting your download from NAS when away from Home).

Luck those who have options. I've been on NBN for over 10 years, via Fixed Wireless, the *only* option avail in Sth Tasmania. (apart from Starlink).
The best speed 10 years ago was 25/5.
The best speed now is 25/5.
NBN report there are no speed upgrades planned for the next 5 years at least.
15 years with no performance upgrades.. and the price is basically the same over the last 10 years.
I suspect this makes Australia's rural NBN the least upgraded internet service in the world. Antarctica and the Moon have had network speed upgrades in that time.. .
I work in video so large uploads. It's quicker to drive to the capital city and upload from there.

CVC doesn't exist on plans higher than 100Mbps, conversely, 50Mbps plans retain CVC. RSP's lack incentive to offer 50 Mbps plans as they need to buy CVC to service all POI's with a decreasing amount of users (making it harder to balance capacity vs costs). So an RSP has a choice of either pushing customers to higher speed plans, or purchasing CVC and potentially subpar network experiences.
Whats also missing in context is there is now very little difference in port costs of 50/20 and 100/20, so whilst prices are going up with the recent agreement between NBN and RSP's, they aren't going up as much as you think.

Interesting video Pat. I am an NBN Optus customer and have suffered outages over the years, sometimes, like the last time 10 days at a time. It seems the best way to go is with 4g or 5g internet. Optus has to pay part of the money it collects to NBN for those on NBN plans, but Optus keeps all the profits on their 4g and 5g plans. The only reason I stay with the NBN plan at the moment is being older and old fashioned I like the landline phone, which is cheaper than having to get a mobile phone.

Their prices went up for new customers a few months ago though to $15 per month I think.

Speed tiers IMO are the stupidest things about Aussie internet, ISP's should just connect you and you get what you area is capable of, don't get me started in costs, we all know that what we pay is about 1/3 of what it costs them to provide, I'm glad data caps are being phased out as they are another BS things that doesn't need to exist, data costs them, ISP's so little yet they used to act like they were doing us a favour giving it to us. The NBN network is capable now with fibre being rolled out to most properties of giving us all gigabit without any significant issues on performance, but again they act like their doing us a favour letting us have 100Mb. Most hoses would barely use more than 40-50Mb for daily tasks, and would be fine, then let others reach the actual capacity of the network when we need to. The whole internet system here is trash, we're only now getting caught up to what the rest of the world had 5 years ago, we should be a world leader in this aspect not some bottom rung country.

Now, its a single user household, the situation would be different if it was Mum, Dad & Kids streaming 4K. However, I imagine that there are many households similar to mine where a 50Mbs connection is more than sufficient for everything needed on the daily. Why should they be penalized & forced to buy a faster speed tier then required? Just Because the Retail ISP wants to juice their profits.

It already feels overpriced, so if I were forced onto a higher price plan I'd frankly be pissed. I'm already struggling with the cost of living in Sydney. Telstra already bumped up the base cost, and practically every other service company has used the "inflation" excuse to start gouging for more than the actual cost increase on their side. Affordability makes forced higher speeds unaffordable with already rising higher cost of living for many, eg rent rises more than pension, making living no longer affordable. Its all about big companies greed.

100mbps plans should start at $30/m. You can’t change my mind, unless you say it should be less.

They could actually charge that because most people don't have the technology to max out the connection in the first place. The government are using it to try and plug their budget problems, instead they should look at cutting off retired mp's & giving them a non-means tested pension at pension age that's 2x the standard pension if they survive 2 terms on the front bench & everybody else that survives a full term a standard non-means tested pension at pension age.

Yeah well a lot of this is supposition. For instance my place is served by the old copper network. Further the copper comes off the electricity pole in my "backyard". Its FTTN of course. The copper pair is aerial for a couple of hundred metres then runs under ground to another street to reach the FTTN node. My service is 50Mb/s and I can get 40mb/s downloads and

How does it help congestion and improve overall performance? It's a finite system. Say one fibre runs at 1GBPS so that means 10 x 100MBPS plans can use that one fibre compared to 20 x 50MBPS plans. This is just another example of companies trying to profiteer and not caring about the customer when the network is over capacity and everyone is being throttled.

We get absolutely shafted in this country for pathetic intenet.
Basic plans are 1000/500 for $70pm in NZ let alone Hyperfiber is now released.

I live in country SA. I'm with Optus .
    No 5G, where i live.
I flat refuse to have the NBN.
    I have 4G Plus over 100 mps
130 gig per month, shared between my phone & tablet.
    Price $110.00 per month.
    I'm happy with that.
Optus prices are much better than Telstra.
I've been with Optus for over 10 years.
I get much faster internet in the country than I did living 5 km from Adelaide city centre i got 1 bar, sometimes 2bars on my phone, i moved 5 years agoi get 4 bars most of the time now.

"But upload speeds will still be quite slow" FFS... All I want is a symmetric plan, or 100mbps upload at a reasonable price. Non-nbn providers in Australia already do this for under $100/m.

I have TPG 50/20 and it works fine. Have never had an issue with performance. Have never even had to call TPG for tech support.
I don't want or need 100/50. If I am being forced to have it though, don't charge me more for it when I didn't want it.

I am still on FTTN but I am sick of TPG trying to push wireless 5G. Sure I got higher average speed speeds but the latency was crap.
The 5G modem also seemed to mask drop outs, I could see that I was momentarily losing connectivity but it wasn't represented in the modems up time.

TPG are Vodafone. Of course they're trying to push their own towers instead of reselling NBNCo lines.

I was on a TPG NBN12 plan for $49.99/month. They made me an offer for 4G wireless for the same price. So far so good. I get 20Mbps download which is faster than NBN12. Downside is i lost my landline.

TPG have been calling, texting me and emailing me every day. I wasn’t answering but I guess they’re calling me about what you mentioned. They were absolutely useless when I was getting my internet set up. It took over a month.
