Building the Ultimate Macintosh "Bridge" Machine... out of a Modern NAS

  • Thanks PCBWay.com - Today we're taking a modern NAS, graciously donated to the channel, and seeing if we can turn this into the ultimate bridge machine for vintage Macs! Can we use this thing to make files available to all of our vintage machines? Better yet... can we get it to run Snow Leopard Server?!
    🍎 The Asustor Lockerstor 4 NAS we used: amzn.to/3x3Ut0c
    Proudly sponsored by www.PCBWay.com - easy PCB prototyping with turnaround as fast as 24 hours.

    The reason Mac OS crashes in VirtualBox on newer hardware is because older Mac OS kernels are not compatible with modern Intel CPUs. You need to change the virtual machine to make it believe it's running on a (iirc) Core 2 Duo, even though it's running on something much newer. GeekLAN goes into it in his blog post called "Virtualising retail Mac OS X images on OS X with virtualbox" (not pasting the link so UA-cam doesn't eat the comment lol). Hope it helps!

      I think, if you paste the link, it automatically goes into "Potentially spam" on the user's UA-cam channel, and UA-cam doesn't notify them that there are comments waiting to be approved. The change was done in response to bots spamming links to adult entertainment websites.

      I've actually had no issues running macs in VMware ESXi which also gives a console in a modern web browser. Sure you need to run a script to enable mac support at all and then tweak a couple of advanced settings but beyond that it's basically good to go. Boots straight from an original iso, no issues with 10.6 Server, works great.
      Given the constrains of the Asustor box (mostly only 8 GB of RAM) I wouldn't think nesting ESXi _inside_ VirtualBox would work but in a pinch as a proof of concept maybe.

      I bought a copy of Snow Leopard, back when physical discs still existed, specifically to try a Hackintosh. I had this exact same problem on the mini ITX 1U rack-mounted audio workstation I was building at the time. In my case, the fix was to install the update package to 10.6.whatever-it-was-at-the-time. You had to be quick. Get through the install, reboot, apply that combo update, and hope it all got done before the kernel panicked. After that, sunshine and rainbows.

    • @danielthorpe8467
      @danielthorpe8467 3 роки тому +1

      Typically you don't - to provision new macs as a business (as you would normally have used network install to do) you enrol them into DEP, then on first time setup, they talk to Apple and download all the configuration they're meant to have. This is "better" as its unavoidable, and uses the Mac's serial # to run - so if you, the user, decide to wipe your mac yourself, it'll still go talk to DEP and download all your company's config.
      Netboot at home was never really a thought - so the new version basically works like iCloud lock but for business

    You actually didn't have to use a seperate bootloader for the OS X server install since Virtualbox can actually boot directly from the OS X disc image if it is in UEFI mode like it was when the VM was creatred but if you make any small change to the hardware setup on it it loses the UEFI mode and the capability to boot OS X for some reason which is why it could see the iBoot disc after you changed the SATA controller to ICH6 and yes, it can only boot OS X on the original configuration

  • @UpLateGeek
    @UpLateGeek 3 роки тому

    Oh dude, I was thinking about OS X server just the other day! My late 2005 15" G4 Powerbook (A1138) finally arrived from Germany, so I was re-watching your minecraft on a G4 Cube video. When I originally watched your video, I got thinking how well it would run on the higher-spec 15" model after seeing minecraft run surprisingly well on your 12" Powerbook, and I commented as much on your video.
    Which of course lead to trawling eBay for one. Took a saved search and a few weeks, but one finally popped up in Germany, so I bid on it and managed to grab it for a reasonable price! The seller shipped it very quickly, but the German postal service and DHL had other ideas. It managed to clear export customs in a reasonable time, but sat "loading" (in German "beladung") for over two months!
    It finally arrived last week, so I threw in a MSATA to 2.5" IDE converter and 128GB SSD, and installed Leopard without issue. Unfortunately the battery is completely dead, so it has to stay tethered to the power brick. And it only came with 512MB of RAM, so I've ordered a couple of 2GB sticks to upgrade it.
    Anyway, I also re-watched your video about installing a minecraft server on a PowerMac G5, which got me thinking about OS X server, and whether I could install it in a VM on my VMware server. So I hope you get it working on your NAS, because now I'm really interested to see what you can do with it!

    Very ironic that VirtualBox is used for the machine. I've found out from my coworkers trying to upgrade to Apple Silicon that VirtualBox is not supported with Rosetta 2 let alone native (or Apple silicon Macs). So far there's no indication that it will support ARM. Might mean I have to seriously think about when to upgrade my 15" MBP (IE when is it worth it for my work environment to patch a different VM: where the VM is used for running a local WordPress site).

  • @allycat7699
    @allycat7699 3 роки тому

    Assuming the NAS has openssh-server installed; why not use kvm & qemu and xforward virt-manager? Runs wayyyyy better than Virtual Box in my experience, might have better luck with getting that 10.6 server vm stable by passing it that very special "guarded words" OSK, in the XML file. Also might not make a difference with the 10 base old AFP clients but having a m.2 set as a cache drive would be great on your more modern shares. Also depending on the distro loaded on the NAS you can do an AFP server on Linux natively with netatalk and avahi-daemon, and even OS9 will see it. The best part is, is that any Mac running Time Machine will automatically see the share on your local network as a time capsule, and can be backed-up to with out having to edit any playlist files like you would to backup time machine to a samba share. Tho I've never been able to get Netboot/Net Install to work quite right on natively, I've read it is possible using a combo of BSD and Darwin of all things... Thanks for the video! ^^
