  • (26 Jul 1945) Latest pictures from the Far East show the Australian landings on Tarakan. The airfield was captured and with the help of native labour quickly restored for the use of Allied planes. More importantly oil wells were denied to the Japanese. One Okinawa victory was slowly but surely won. The civilian population came out from caves and dug-outs and were herded to safety by the Americans.

    The 2/48 SA Battalion was at the Siege of Tobruk , 1st and 2nd El Alamein , then when part of the 27TH Brigade transferred to the 9TH AIF. They completed jungle training and went into New Guinea and eventually here at Tarakan
