    6:49 - Hiking
    Our de-winterizing steps are below. Please refer to Roadtrek website for complete instructions: www.roadtrek.com/owners/
    1. Add 2 gallons of water in water tank with 1 cup of fresh bleach (less than 6 months old).
    2. Drive around for an hour, let sit for a couple more hours.
    3. Open fresh water tank drain valve under driver’s door step and drain the tank.
    4. Fill and drain to ground the fresh water tank. Fill again, adding 1 cup of bleach halfway through.
    5. Turn water pump on, run hot/cold water through galley and bathrooms sinks, and toilet until all pink antifreeze is out of lines and water runs clear. Do the same of the outside shower.
    6. Drain remaining contents of fresh water tank to the ground, and refill with water. Optional step: add ½ cup of vinegar to get rid of chlorine smell in this tankful. Let vinegar sit in tank a few hours to overnight, then drain tank again. Then refill tank with fresh water.

    I've been out about 14 nights so far in the Tofino..lots of hiking in Frontenac Provincial park.paddling in Algonquin Park and on the Ottawa River..while hiking, I use a thermacell clipped to my day pack and at times a 2nd clipped on my waist..they work well for mosquitoes..I carry deet to spray pant cuffs ,wrist cuffs etc for ticks..lots around.(I always hike in long pants).no bites.flicked a couple off my hands just as they dropped on... my dog Galleta has a tick collar so the ticks fall off dead by the time we get back to van..and usually it's between 5-10 daily. I haven't dewinterized my water tank yet..I use refillable jugs..works so far..it is nice to be in the van..the systems on the Tofino are really top notch..I always boondock and the solar ,inverter and 2 house batteries always ready to go.I have used the furnace often at night..really powerful...Glad you're back out! I enjoyed the video! Cheers!

      Sounds like all is working well! So good to be out! Ticks not usually an issue here, but lots of mosquitos 🦟. We are camped near a river now...sharing space with many of them! Safe travels!

    Made it to BC for open day , now 2 weeks of quarantine in the kootneys .

      @hikenrv  4 роки тому

      We hope all goes well with your quarantine! We stayed isolated for this short trip...no stops and RV site didn’t require any contact with staff. People were all very friendly, but stayed a good distance away. As we recall, the Kootenays are one of your favorite spots. Be safe and be well!

    Lovely, absolutely lovely. Refreshing and relaxing to watch your video. Love seeing the barred owl. We live in the greatest province! You have totally captured the essence of BC in this video. Bravo to you both. Are you ever afraid of running into bears or cougars? (Esp. in Whistler) looking forward to your next adventure👍🙂

      Glad you enjoyed! We were very excited as well to see the owl! As for bears etc, we have never had an issue, but are always cautious, making lots of noise when needed. We had a small air horn with us this trip as well, but never had to use. On the old road out a couple of motorcycle’s passed by, largely reducing any concerns. Thank you for the kind comments! 🚐

    How did you manage with BC parks reservations? I spent 3 hours on June 1, but eventually managed to book a number of weekends on Vancouver Island. Glad to see you resuming your great journeys and videos.

      Certainly challenging the first day of openings! We ended up with 3 bookings, not always our first choice and that took about 90 minutes of trying. Haven’t tried yet for other trips, but Vancouver Island one of our favorites! Thanks for the comment and Safe travels! 🚐

    Just wondering about De-Winterizing...
    Had you read in the Maintenance Section (pg, 46) under "At Least Twice a Year,"
    "With the tank empty, add one cup of mineral oil and one cup of hot water to the gray tank."?
    No reason was given. The only thing I can locate online is a way to lubricate the pull valves on the black and gray tanks while at the dump site.
    My Roadtrek was sold in the US market.

    Any recommendations for service for our new RT Zion 2021 in Vancouver BC area?

    • @hikenrv
      @hikenrv  3 місяці тому

      If you are looking for dealer service the closest RT dealer is in Chilliwack (BCRV) but they are relatively new to the RT brand so we don’t have any experience with them. We have used North Shore RV several times for more basic RV service (propane check, basic things more general to a RV). And a bit far away, but have heard good things about Voyageur RV near Kelowna who have serviced RTs for years. . Congrats on the new 🚐!

    Great video.Just curious, do you always carry bear spray hiking in BC? Have you had any encounters?

    • @hikenrv
      @hikenrv  4 роки тому

      Thank you. We rarely carry bear spay, though often a small air horn. We are always cautious and make sure we make noise. If we are in areas where lots of grizzlies we do same but do also carry bear spray as well. We have had several times we where have seen and been close to black bears. We give them lots of room and leave. All good! Appreciate the comments! 🚐

    you drain beach and antifreeze in a park campground very disappointed that you would do this.
    And then put it on youtube. Are you the person who dumped sewage at the side of the highway in Sask ?

    • @hikenrv
      @hikenrv  4 роки тому +2

      We followed the manual, but actually drained most or all the RV pink antifreeze in the the water tank previously (but you wouldn’t need to as it is non poisonous; for water systems) to the trip and everything else we put into the sewer connection when we dumped grey/black tanks. Always do. Just didn’t bother filming that...no one (hopefully) would do otherwise with the black tank. Only a minor amount of bleach heavily diluted by lots (!) of water each time, all evaporated nicely in the gravel.

    • @shawnahansen8597
      @shawnahansen8597 4 роки тому +1

      Irwin, I watched the video and there was a mention that they were clearing out the grey/black tanks into the sewer line which is why they were at Whistler RV. So emptying water and diluted bleach does not cause harm, in particular when it's done while it's raining.home.howstuffworks.com/bleach4.htm... this article states: when sodium hypochlorite is released into the air, it's broken down by sunlight and natural substances in the environment. Sodium hypochlorite does not accumulate in the food chain like some substances do, such as mercury. When sodium hypochlorite gets into water or soil, it breaks down into the ions sodium, calcium, and hypochlorite; these ions can potentially react with other substances in water. People use much harsher chemicals to wash their vehicles/awnings and let it drain into the groundwater all the time. Plus plenty of people use bleach in their homes and laundry. The slight trickle of water is significantly different than dumping sewage (I assume someone emptied their black tank?).

    • @wareagle1
      @wareagle1 2 роки тому

      Are you always this rude or just every once in a while? Asking them if they dumped sewage on the side of the road, geez. Its so easy to be kind.
