  • Oiran procession at Edomura, Nikko, Japan.
Edomura is a Theme Park in Japan, Nikko.
You can check out buildings (homes, shops, magistrate, samurai residence) which are similar to the ones being built in the Edo-period.
Also there are various programs to attend. Like Ninja Theatre, Boat Cruise, seasonal events and Oiran Parade (which you can see in the video).
The programs are only in Japanese, but you can enjoy the Ninja Theatre, the Haunted House, the maze and some others without any language knowledge.
There are several Theme Parks in Japan and it can be a unique and funny experience to check out one.
I have visited 3 of them (Edomura, Toei Eigamura and Azuchi Momoyama Bunka Mura), but Edomura really is the best. And it is near to Tokyo.
(Toei Eigamura is within Kyoto city and is also a really good place to visit.)
I wrote about Edomura on my blog (well it is in Hungarian, but you can check the photos :) ).
    journeysofsangsahwa.wordpress....
Or check out the offical site of Edomura (Edo Wonderland):

For those who don't know, oirans were very high ranking prostitutes in the edo period (1600-1868) all the way up until 1957 when prostitution was banned. Whenever a customer paid for their services there would be this long procession. It should be noted that oirans weren't your common prostitute, these were exceptionally beautiful women who, in addition to being a prostitute, were also well versed in traditional arts like singing, classical dance, and skilled at instruments such as the koto.

    • @hanabi1856
      @hanabi1856 2 роки тому +15

Yujo: Women who provide sexual services at Yukaku. Most of them are educated and many can play traditional Japanese dances and musical instruments.
Geisha: Female entertainer. Some provide sexual services, but this is at their own will.
Kamuro: A child of Yujo apprentice. Most of them are children sold to their parents, and the others are children of Yujo. They wait on high-ranking Yujo hand and foot and learn work as Yujo. In addition, children who are smart or have a talent for music get talent education so that they can become higher-ranking Yujo.
Oiran: A woman with a particularly high rank among Yujo. Not only are they exceptionally beautiful, but they also highly educated and were well versed in traditional arts like singing, classical dance and playing musical instruments. They were out of reach of ordinary people, and even the rich person was not easy to meet. In order to meet Oiran, it is necessary to have someone introduce him, and in the process, the customer was judged whether he is wealthy and has no problem with his personality. Even if a customer is allowed to meet Oiran, he cannot talk to her in the first two visits. He had to call Geisha and live it up extravagantly. In addition, if he was disliked by Oiran at the visit, he will not be allowed to meet again. Oiran was able to choose a customer. Also, if the customer visit another Yujo after three visits, he will be considered cheating and he will pay a lot of money or be banished. There were Some Oiran who never provided sexual services until Miuke (Other person pay Yujo's debt to let Yujo quit Yujo. Usually doing this to make Yujo one's own wife) was done. This is because Oiran didn't sell herself short.
Oiran procession: Oiran walks around the Yukaku on some special day such as the day when they pick up valuable customers. This parade also has the purpose of preserving the dignity of Oiran By dressing luxuriously and being accompanied by a lot of people. Oiran usually doesn't go out to increase her value, so only this time can ordinary people see Oiran. This is like a parade of celebrity in modern days.
      Very important thing:
In the sense of those times, Yujo was not a profession to be looked down upon. They were only sold to their parents when they were very young, and they did not become prostitutes on their own initiative. They were recognize as really devoted daughters by people. And especially Oiran is not only good-looking, but also highly educated and well versed in traditional arts, so Oiran was respected as ideal female.

@@hanabi1856 @hanamukeiro more on geishas, it was against the rules in the brothels they worked in to service the customers sexually and would bring hard punishment since they were invading the yujo's work, but in smaller bbrothels the rules wernt as strict. In early 18th century the government believed woman being geishas would disturb the morals so it was really hard for geishas to get work by their art and many had to turn to prostitution.

The movie you had watched was about geishas remember how her sister was sold off to ““ the pleasure”” district instead of the performance district? “”The pleasure” district had bought young girls to turn them into what we would call prostitution now a days, but it used to be very respected and seen more high class than a geisha even. As sad as it is it is a part of Japan’s culture.

Oirans are highest ranking prostitutes. Only top rich people could afford them. And they were allowed to resist customers whenever they wanted. They made a lot of millions, one night with such women could cost a million for top girl. Geishas are not prostitutes. They weren't allowed to have sex with customers. They would entertain the customers in pairs during customer meeting with oiran. They were entertainers and lower standing compared to oirans. Yujo's were cheaper prostitutes. Low rank working girls. They had it worse.

The costume of an oiran for this kind procession (basically just to show herself to the city, thanks all, display her skills and attracts more customers) was really heavy. Some says it was around 30kg but I'm not sure about that (it would mean heavier than an average samurai armor !). The specific walk plus the weight of the costumes must have made this kind of procession exhausting.
