Thanks for uploading this video Jordan. Some people don’t realize how important it is to keep an air conditioner clean. When it stops blowing cold they just toss it out instead of checking the filter evaporator or condenser. That’s how many vintage units get trashed because people can’t take good Care of them.
OMG!! Thank you so much! I so needed this. I'm not mechanically inclined had no idea where to even start. This old granny really appreciates your help.
Great tutorial, thank you Jordan! I have my unit most of the way apart and about to blow out the dust with compressed air and then clean the coils with hydrofluoric acid like you have done. I bought a gallon from a local A/C parts store, and mix it in a harbor freight pump sprayer. This works great on the A/C coils and radiator of your car as well. Just warm up the car and generously spray the foam in both sides and all over coil and radiator, sit for 15-30 minutes and hose off. I don't use a sprayer, only rinse straight out of the hose to ensure no damage to the fins. The hydrofluoric acid "etches" the aluminum fins, removing dirt and debris that prevents transfer of heat from coils to the outside air. This maintenance makes a noticable improvement of the cooling efficiency of the unit, plus lowers the energy consumption and extends the life of the system.
I wouldn't advise letting the cleaner sit on a machine like this for more than a few minutes tops. These coils are very thin and cheaply made, you're walking on thin ice after a half hour of interaction with the cleaner.
I've seen larger ones in commercial systems, they create good air pressure but they're rather noisy. Quite a ridiculous application in a machine like this in my opinion. It's still a piece of Chinese junk, but at least now it won't fail from rust!
Thank you for this video. I just bought my first window air conditioner unit. I’m glad to know how to service it. I wonder if I should add the drain that you added. I live in South Carolina and I think the annual pollen season would be pretty hard on the condenser with water splashed on it.
@@JordanU I did what u did and when I plugged it in it powers in but the fan doesn't spin it sounds like something is blocking it now that the compressor or fan isn't moving please help !! It was fine before I clean it but it needed to be cleaned
alot of times i find the screws in older units are either rusty or just snap off, i normally replace them all with small sheet metal screws, not exactly sure of the measurement but i think they are like 1/2 inch long and they have a slot in them for a screwdriver and a 1/4 inch.
Several of the screws on this machine could fare to be replaced. The length doesn't matter too much as long as they're not long enough to collide with any of the lines.
Being a female that has never attempted anything like this would be very intimidating for me: looks like a total dismantle and reassemble job. I guess I'll have to pass on cleaning this unit and ask a whole lot of questions about cleaning requirements before buying my next unit.
Great Video. This is the only video showing how to fully take the A/C apart for cleaning. All the other videos only show cleaning from the outside or without removing the fan/shroud. I can see no way to effectively clean the condenser without taking the fan/shroud out. On mine I could barely lift it up enough to clear the condenser. The wire connecting the fan was too short and they had it ran between refrigerant lines. There really should be a removable filter on the condenser, just like the one on the evaporator. I completely agree on adding a drain after I opened mine up. The bottom of the condenser was rusted pretty bad and the tray was full of nasty pond scum. I could care less about a little bit better efficiency from water being thrown on the condenser. I'd rather the a/c last longer than save a little electricity. All other A/C's have drains. I'm sure the water adds to the dust collecting and clogging the condenser up. I'm betting it will stay cleaner much longer now. I also don't care about water dripping on the ground. I'm sure it could be a problem in apartments in the city. A removable drain plug would have solved the problem. If dripping water is a problem, leave it in. I spent $18: $8 on a Frost King - Air Conditioner Fin Tool. It worked great. Spray the coil with dish soap so it will slide better. $8 on a can of Arm & Hammer HVAC Coil Cleaner. Enough cleaner to clean multiple window A/C's or a single A/C multiple times. $2 dish cleaning brush to brush the condenser. It took me one hour to take the window A/C apart and clean it and maybe twenty minutes to straighten all the fins on the condenser. The A/C looks like new inside and out now and while running outside on my truck tailgate it was blowing out 30 degree colder air than ambient. Well worth the investment and time.
Your theory about the condenser staying cleaner when dry is absolutely correct. A dry coil will allow a lot of dirt to pass through and is much easier cleaned when the time comes, meanwhile a wet coil will cause the dust to stick to it.
Excellent! Even showing experience and not hiding it. Such Confidence!! I hope to watch again before attempting. I think I'll video tape so I can recall where everything goes. Man alive!! But because of breathing in a room, in a guest room, a couple of nights ago and waking up first and second day with a sore throat I KNEW it's got to be the A/C. There's got to be so many people that have NOT see what we just saw inside an A/C. I wondered about the "freon" and how one would know if that is something to be concerned about and how many years you would deal with that. (R-410A that is the new type of ? for the ozone layer issues. I just had to look that up) THANK YOU! Did you do this all in one day? Did you need to have any "time" for air drying?
Glad the video is helpful to you. No drying time needed as long as the controls don't get wet, the unit is intended to be able to operate while wet. The refrigerant fiasco is a non-issue, it's not going to do any damage to anything if it's concealed within the machine.
I try no to strip my AC unit down to this level ? Every time I do disassemble a AC unit, I find a Rattle or a Noise comes out of nowhere that I cannot fix ! I leave the Covers on and use a good Coil Cleaner and garden hose to wash out all the debris, I'm in Canada so I only use my unit 2-3 months of the year.
This video has saved my LIFE! Would you recommend any other condenser coil cleaner that’s more affordable ? I rather not spend $30-$40 on that brand for only one AC.
I have not used any other coil cleaners that worked as well. You don't use the whole container on one unit, you could probably clean this machine 5 or 10 times with the gallon container.
