    Nicely done Gary. These would make great gifts for buddies. I think you got it when suggesting the offset on the bend instead. Stellar first go.

    You remind me a a musician friend. He hears a song on the stereo and has it figured out in a matter of seconds. You see a photo of something and manage to produce it almost effortlessly. An artist at work.

    I definitely think you should keep up with the knives every once in awhile. You seem to enjoy it and for someone who "just started" with knives, you make amazing blades. I couldn't believe your rasp knife, and this one surprised me at the end. And hey, at least you know it works, haha. Keep it up.

    Really nice little folder there. For safety's sake, I would probably try to make a trough for the blade to rest in while not in use, maybe forge a trough past the bend and continue it until it gets fairly close to the "button"? Don't know...it'll give me something to play with. As always, thanks for posting!!!

    I don't suppose you might have the time sometime that you could make a video of how to make a proper Draw knife, would love to see it done up right. I've looked else where no luck on finding the right way to do it, I guess I could wing it but rather see it done by someone who knows what they are doing. Thanks

    You're asking the wrong person if you want to see it done by someone who knows what they are doing! I have no Idea what I'm doing most of the time. I have done a sort of draw knife before from a rasp. I'm really busy in the summer doing real work but if I get a chance i'll try and do one.

    Well done! I'm sure I'm gonna do this one also, I really like it. But I had a question about the handle, I have a lot of broken hay rake tooth in here, and they are all made of spring steel, is it a good idea to use them instead of mild steal? Because the handle has a little bit the function of a spring. It would be nice if I can use these because I can't throw them away but I also haven't had a single project to use them for untill now.

    After the knife was all done and all the kinks were worked out do you still recommend not putting in the groove you put in with the cross peen? And just leave the round stock round except for the penny end.

    Thanks, I do that for two reasons, one, if I make a cock up talking while I work I can't easily put it right, doing it afterwards means I just re-record a short bit of audio! Second there is nothing worse than looking forward to watching a video and not being able to hear what is being said over the hammering! Thanks again..

    Mild steel case hardens, unless carbon packed and treated. This causes migration of the carbon to the iron, if done at proper temps a high carbon steel can be attained.
    There are recipies for efficient case hardening solutions on the web, though I'm a fan of "SuperQuench"

    If you're stuck for ideas search the net or in books, one book I'll recommend just for it's title lol "101 metal projects for the novice blacksmith" Has some great ideas in it, all you should do is add an artistic flare ;)
    Perhaps search "blacksmith pdf" in google and see what kind of things you come across, best of luck!
    Also try art sites like deviantart, just search common words simplest being "blacksmith"

    anvilfire, it is .com at the end they wouldn't let me post the link, in their iForge how to section has a lot of great ideas for starters as well as more advance projects.

  • @prototypep4
    @prototypep4 10 років тому

    You are aware hammers will not actually shatter if hit together right? The wooden handles might break but no matter the hardness of your hammers they won't shatter each other. This was tested on mythbusters using various stages of tool hardness including some very hold blacksmiths hammers that were extremely hard.

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  10 років тому +2

      They might not shatter but they can be damaged.

    • @prototypep4
      @prototypep4 10 років тому

      garyhuston
      In all the tests performed the most damaged inflicted was maybe flakes of steel on the hardest hammers. Nothing at all on the softer ones.

    • @jakei8322
      @jakei8322 9 років тому +2

      prototypep4 the flakes of steel are the danger, that's the "shrapnel" he was talking about. its enough to go through skin and do some serious damage, my dad knew a guy who was doing basically that and a chip of steel shot off, went through his arm and cut multiple tendons, the guy couldn't afford the reconstructive surgery and he now basically has a useless hand, he cant even move a finger.

    • @prototypep4
      @prototypep4 9 років тому

      jake i 1) "my dad new a guy who's cousin said he saw a video of his friends sister's brother-in-law do it" does not make a convincing story. This is the internet. I'm a very skeptical human being.
      2) you are seriously doubting how hard those shards would be coming off. If they were coming off with that much force from just striking two hammers together fuck blacksmiths would be losing limbs all over the place from the scale coming off hot metal when they strike it.
      3) if you're going to try and make this an argument back it up with some sort of hard evidence.
      4) I feel it's important to point and laugh at America and similar countries that don't have universal health care in 2015. Sucks being stuck in such a backwards country that still baffles me on how it's classed as first world.

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  9 років тому +1

      prototypep4 I have a piece of "Shrapnel" from a hammer in my face. When I was an apprentice we used to hit our buffers with a normal hammer and one day a piece flew off and hit me in the face just by my eye. Now most farriers use a hard plastic or rubber mallet for that very reason.
      Watch this video of my party trick: ua-cam.com/video/0zhq5X4Dqm8/v-deo.html

    that must be an italian blade because here when you get a new knife you have to nick one of your fingers or your hand so the knife "tastes" your blood and won't "Bite" you again
