What I Learned From Building a Ridiculous Keyboard by Hand

- Alternate Title: Keyboard video part 2
Notes:
I'm aware that there is a dead pixel in the middle of the screen. I haven't used this camera in a while and it seems I'm due for a new one.
I'm red/green colour deficient, so the white balance might be a bit wonky (also I don't know which screen is truer)
You may notice some strange stretching at the bottom of the screen. I don't know what caused this, but it wasn't worth my time to fix it.
BTW, some macro keyboards allow for a foot petal. If you are seated all the time, a foot petal for shift or [macro activate, backspace, etc.] can be super cool.
Another advantage of building our own - you can have inputs that are not keys !
Thanks for this nice update on the keyboard well done.
QMK has so many options that if you check them out more in detail you will most likely spend the next years constantly tweaking your keymap just like i am.
vial is now a nice opensource alternative to via and allows you to change the keymap on the fly with qmk's raw hid support definetly can recommend that.
also homerow modifiers changed my life with no need to move the hand for keycombinations.
keep up the nice videos man
Hey @Jan Lunge, I was about to ask for some more info about the advantages of via and vial in comparison to QMK itself… but then I realized you already do have a full video on this: ua-cam.com/video/POi9ttF2dsk/v-deo.html Awesome! 🥳 Thanks a lot!
Hey mate, enjoyed the 2 videos. Since your keyboard uses QMK, have you tried VIA to configure it? Configuration is instant without flashing, which is great while honing in on your ideal setup. Plus you can keep VIA app (or webpage if your browser supports WebHID, such as Chromium based browsers do) open so you won't forget what's where while playing around. It also supports more advanced stuff such as mod-tap, layer-toggle-dual-function keys and macros, and many QMK codes, all without flashing.
Serious suggestion: look into homerow mods. They're an absolute gamechanger, and so much easier to get used to than you'd expect.
Until today when i wanted to buy a split keyboard but cannot (lack of suppliers in my country) i learned that building your own keyboard is a thing. And I'm so desperate that I will do it. Great video. Very informative for my purpose.
Really happy to find this, so algorithm works :) BTW: for the alt+1 I just use double taps. You can assign them to another combinations and the detection works very well.
I liked the first video as well, but I think this retrospective does add a lot to it! Thanks! 😊✌
Thanks for the update. I built a redox and printed a dactyl that will be my next build. Based on some of the comments I am going to look into using VIA, but to facilitate flashing new keymaps I added a 4th contact in my trrs jack to the reset pin and added a button to put the micro in flashing mode.
Awesome video mate, this channel needs more views!
Hope the algorithm boosts this up too!
Thank you so much. Can you talk a little more about 1. Wrist rests? 2. Is it difficult to use all 6 thumb cluster keys?
how do you install qmk in linux?
Great video! What OS are you using and how did you manage to use i3?
I switch constantly. Used to be arch with i3 at home, but I'm running ubuntu now with mutter since it's the easiest to get support for when trying to run games. I've also had cent os running i3 and that works well.
I think manjaro have pretty good support for games out of the box
Great work mate, loved this project!
Got recently into split keyboards, bought myself an Ergodox Moonlander but the one you made was the one I originally wanted.
Though I don't have the tools and time and PATIENCE you got to set it up.
Congrats, keep it up and hope you can share some more of these projects
I actually built the Dactyl because I didn't want to pay that much for a keyboard! Little did I know that the bill would rack up pretty similarly anyway...
You could also change ur i3 config to use the OS key instead of the Alt key as leader no?
Post videos about your i3/vim/etc. setup!
Swapping Alt and OS key?? You could have changed the main mod key in your i3 configuration, and i believe you should have done that. Setting the OS key to OS functions like controlling windows makes sense.
When you were making this keyboard, what connectors did you use to extend the arduino into the slot and what rj9 insert did you use
I see you are as crazy as I am(fancy keyboard, window manager and vim) Right now I am struggling with my dactyl manuform and I need some help but I can't find any so if you could help me a bit I would be really gratefull.
Intending on making more videos or ...?
And about the Dvorak thing I started typing on it a year ago, I got to 60 ish wpm and it's so uncomfortable to type on it, my hands started hurting, maybe in an ortolineal keyboard is better but then it's the same than typing in qwerty
If you still what a better layout than QWERTY check out Colemak DH Mod.
Ortholinear keyboards are not very ergonomic, unless they're split, you're probably worse off on an ortholinear than on a standard keyboard. I prefer column staggered ones, but some people seem to hate them.
I likeit
You are way too good to make so few videos ❤
