As i see from the reviews shatterpoint is more of character based game, versus legion's army building. I'll stick with legion, and hope we still have a good many years of content
With all the free resources out there, you can just play shatterpoint using the legion minis and terrain for scale. It's how I'm trying out the game, just using an online die roller.
This video was actually super pertinent to me because I am just getting into Star Wars ground based miniatures (been playing Armada for about a year) and so it was a tough decision between these two. Ultimately even with all the hype around Shatterpoint with it's release, I ended up deciding on Legion, I love the scale of legion, I like being able to have just a lot of minis on the board, and for space I just picked up a 3x6 plastic Walmart table for playing armada, we have to use a side table for cards but it works. As someone who mainly plays at home, homebrewing is pretty easy for me so If my friends and I want to mix factions for legion we totally can so that ends up not being a problem for us, and from the things I have watched legions objectives also seem like they are more easily built into an immersive experience where as shatterpoint seems more board gamey (just my personal take). Fortunately for me all the aforementioned hype around Shatterpoint has one of my local game stores getting rid of their legion stock so I got a core set and Blizzard force box for both 40% off.
@@seb2750 I ended up getting the Empire vs. Rebels first (also on sale cuz my local game store was getting out of legion) and I wanted storm trooper miniatures as I also run Age of Rebellion, a Star Wars role-playing game that is set in the Galactic Civil war. But since it was the Republic I really wanted to play I ended up getting that core set as well, I ended up getting that one from Gamers Guild becuase they arn't too far from where I live and all of there legion stuff is anywhere from a few bucks to $20-30 cheaper than MSRP and their selection in pretty comprehensive. Unfortunately they didn't have a 501st Battleforce box, but pretty much everybody was sold out of that for a while but I ended up hunting one down for a bit of a discount that I was able to get shipped from Australia for not too much money.
I think that was a very accurate and fair description of Shatterpoint. It also completely encompasses everything I don’t like about it, I’ll be sticking with Legion. I’m glad you and other people can enjoy it though, I do feel it is a unique game.
I just got into Legion right before shatterpoint went up for pre order. I think shatterpoint looks awesome but I'm invested in Legion now 😅. But I think there's room in this world for both
Yeah, my best friend is super excited for shatter point so we made a deal that I'd buy the legion stuff and he'd buy shatter point then we'd both have to play each others games
There’s definitely a space for both games and I think it could just depend on my mood on the day as to whether i would take out Legion or Shatterpoint, or even Armada or X-wing. They all scratch a different itch & no one game can replace any of the others.
I couldn't agree more, unfortunately my X-wing tends to sit pretty unplayed because I'm just way more often in the mood for armada, I think it's just a personality thing for me. The massive scale of armada appeals to me and that's one of the reasons I'm starting out with legion rather than shatter point.
It's hard to compare as they are two totally different games. At the moment I'm sticking to Legion as it has the rebels and empire, which Shatterpoint doesn't as yet. I grew up with the original trilogy and that era will always be my favourite and I'm not that bothered by the clone wars stuff. If someone else I know gets shatterpoint, I'll give it a go and see what it's like and might get it when there's forces I'm interested in.
I prefer Shatterpoint just for being a low model count game. I just don't have the time/energy anymore to do large scale army games. I have considered using minis from Legion in Stargrave though, which is another game system that is more to my liking.
3;20 The skirmish mode ruined Imperial Assault. Imperial Assault was an RPG, dungeon crawl style game played on tiles, that pitted non canon heroes of the Rebellion against the Empire over the course of an 11 game campaign. It was a great game, but FFG wanted that Game's Workshop money and IA didn't sell enough plastic. Plus Hasbro disputed that it was a board game, which also didn't help.
Always been interested in Star Wars Legion, but Shatterpoint looks like the perfect way for me to get into the Star Wars miniatures scene. I personally far prefer skirmish games to big army games. More intimate, intense and personal!
I agree! I think a lot of people prefer the larger wargames of 40K and Legion, but there's something a bit more intense for me about feeling the loss of units in a skirmish game, especially when the characters are so iconic.
I feel like Legion is the more tactical, strategic game with bigger unit counts, while Shatterpoint is quicker, more focused and not as in-depth tactically. I personally started 40K instead of Legion, and Shatterpoint is for a quick, fun game. With X-Wing, Armada, and Shatterpoint - Legion was 1 too many Star Wars game for my wife lol
I think the reason I like shatterpoint so much, is purely for the cartoon style of their miniatures. I adore clone wars, and star wars rebels, and it's super fun to have those shows in a wargame form
Shatterpoint is my Legion. I love the concept of Skirmish over Army because I spend so much time painting and creating everything, its heartbreaking to lose half a painted squad in one turn.
One of the key factors that you touched on, for me personally, is the price differences. As a newbie to skirmish games I feel the obvious choice for me would be shatterpoint. With the long term investment vs short term of both games. The higher buy in initially with shatterpoint most likely stays lower than long term investments in legion expansions and terrain costs, table costs etc. Like your review video mentioned I’m excited for shatterpoint mainly due to ease of access (ofc the Star Wars theme helps too lol)
Yeah wiping out your opponent's forces is something I love to do. It's kinda why I don't really play X-Wing anymore since they changed it to a scenario-based game where it's more about capturing objectives than killing.
@@Crabbok I totally understand that comment. I used to love X-wing, but I'm not a big fan of "king of the hill/capture the flag" type win-cons if they're the standard. Every once in a while is fine, but as the primary win-con? Nah.
Having just started into legion in the past year or so, it is hard to justify buying another game and learning a new system. Though, the models look awesome.
I'm gonna stick to legion, I just love the waves of troop running across the board, and I know it's not how it's supposed to be played but 800pts on a 3x3 table makes your rounds much faster and deadlier and is still a huge amount of fun, so while I'd love to play it on a full sized game, my dinning table will do for now😂
Ive really been looking into playing legion and your vids are really helping. Ive never really been a table top war gamer before but im excited to start.
Completely new to tabletop miniatures games (haven’t played a single game yet) and I am grateful for this video! Love the game difference explanations on things I wouldn’t know or consider. One teeny tiny nit is that as a new player some terms are completely unfamiliar, e.g. “tabling”, but all in all helped me to decide that Shatterpoint is the direction I want to go (mainly because of thematic team building!). Thanks again and looking forward to learning a lot more.
This is excellent feedback! I'll keep that in mind in the future! For reference, "Tabling" is when you kill all of your opponent's army, effectively making them remove each miniature from the table. They have nothing left, so you win by complete elimination.
I think Shatterpoint is pretty true to the spirit of the Clone Wars episodes. Some clones and droids might die, but Dooku and Anakin are always “fine” by the end of the episode.
That's so true! I'm 24 so Clone Wars hit at the perfect time for me, and I'm a sucker for the art and minis in Shatter Point. It let me play out the Star Wars Anime I never got lol
As a board gamer, the hobby aspect has kept me away from miniature games. But the Star Wars theme and smaller model count have brought me in, so I am going with Shatterpoint. Thanks for the video!
I own and play all 5 factions for Legion and love it. Its a big investment, but having played MCP, i have a hard time believing that SP can deliver a better gaming experience than Legion. I dont deny it has a higher level of production value, plays faster, and will take up less space, but i feel like its a game for people who want to play a couple rounds over 90 minutes or so and then say, that was fun. Legion is for people who want to play a game with themselves while list building, play a dynamic mini-game during setup and deployment, and the play the full 3-5 hour wargame while trying to compensate for all the mistakes and unknowns that popped up along the way. Afterwards, you stand and disect the game for half an hour with your opponent. That's the game for me. That being said, if you think SP is amazing, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Your money, your time, your joy - do with it as you see fit.
Shatterpoint is more what I hoped Legion would be. I always prefer small skirmish games. I played Legion because of the theme, not the game. Shatterpoint is what I've been waiting for.
I now have both! I think they have different sweet spots for tabletop gaming. As I get older I do find myself with a preferance for skrimsh games. The other major pointt is I find a lot of my non gaming freinds who won,t touch a wargame like legion will happily sit down for Shatterpoint.
I just wish they would have used the same scale. I use legion minis for the RPG. It would be nice to have an additional source for that, but with the minis being different scales it's not going to look right.
Can't asy myself at the moment because my Shatterpoint is still in the process of being put together, but I'll continue to look forward to games of both!
As always, love the video. You were frank, I’m going to be brutal. AMG have found a way to sell us all the same stuff again for more money. They’ve basically made Star Wars Crisis Protocol. For me this is a pointless project that despite the defending comments, it’s a heck of a lot of money. Core set plus a couple of expansions and i’m 250 bucks out of pocket is insane. No sorry, I won’t be investing in Shatterpoint. Legion every day for me.
It is fun having a game with hard to kill characters and flexibility to build crazy cross faction teams that don't depend on having tons of redundant expansions to beef up your team
Im seriously considering shatterpoint because of the model size. Only having 3 models as a team is kinda appealing to me from a painting and building perspective lol. Even a clone team in legion is pretty large despite it being an elite army and since im into 40k too itd be kinda tough to paint that many models.
Looks so awesome! This video just tipped the scales and totally SOLD me on this game.... That terrain will work so nice for other scifi games, like OPR Firefight, etc... and is a nice change from the style of the stuff i have already... Gotta have this set, and a few expansions...
I was invested in Legion util all the rules bloat - and along came another game that totally took over for me, A Song of Ice and Fire. Now, that game will have to vacate the premises for Shatterpoint . and I will take up playing armada again, dusting off those old ships and give them a new coat of paint. Have not tride Shatterpoint yet, still in the gluing-up phase, but I think I will really like this one.
I'm more of a collector/hobbyist than a gamer when it comes to minis, so I'm a bit torn. Currently I'm sticking with Legion, since the scale just matches up a little better with some of the other mini ranges I collect like Warhammer and Dungeons & Dragons. It also currently has a selection for vehicles and such, which has always been one of the big advantages of smaller scale figures. From a pure collecting/painting standpoint, though, I could see where others might gravitate more towards the slightly larger scale and character focus of Shatterpoint. It just depends on what you want to focus on from a hobby perspective.
I'm in love with both these games. Legion has been the Miniatures game I was waiting for. With the release of both Special Operations and Shatterpoint however, I've really been enjoying the smaller squad size. I'm scaling down my Legion library and will be more picky with my Shatterpoint purchases so i don't over do either.
Thanks for the great video. Each game scratches a different itch for me. I see Legion is a miniatures war game. Shatterpoint is a board game with cool miniatures. The strategies are different. I like them both and plan on playing both.
I just jumped into legion. I saw shatterpoint coming and was trying to hear the answers to these questions. I think the large army v army model is more exciting to me. I do wonder about is both worth having.
I feel like Shatterpoint is far more interesting to a broader audience just looking for fun with miniatures, vs legion and the wargaming crowd (which I definitely belong in). I'm looking forward to playing Shatterpoint with my family! Next up, I wish we could get an "epic" scaled star wars wargame. Thank you for all of your coverage of star wars games. I've heavily used your "what to buy" videos for getting into each legion faction!
I'm actually kind of surprised at your answer. I was fully expecting it to be close but that you would have leaned towards Legion. It does respark my interest in Shatterpoint though. I had been up and down on it. Might have to actually buy the starter now and just dive in. If I dont like it, I have some col models and smore terrain for Legion!!
My big unanswered question remains. How much does Shatterpoint feel like Star Wars? From what I’ve seen so far, it just doesn’t have that Star Wars feel to it. I’m also a bit surprised you like Shatterpoint better as the game seems to me like like X-Wing vs Armada. If Legion is the larger Armada-type game, Shatterpoint is the smaller X-Wing-type game - but you LOVE Armada. Anyway, at this point I have almost zero desire to try out Shatterpoint unless it really has a stronger Star Wars feel than Legion (which I’m thinking it doesn’t).
Every character in Shatterpoint is thematic and feels right.... Ahsoka and Ventress moving all over... the combat really feels like an episode of Clone Wars
I never quite got into Legion because I was bummed that I couldn't play a bunch of named characters together, so Shatterpoint will definitely scratch that itch. One way they could get vehicles in there -- ultimate encounters, like MCP has...
I bought Shatterpoint a week ago and havent played a round yet but I am eger to find out wich game is better for me. Greetings from Germany and keep up the great Content. 👍
I'm one of those that would despise the list building in Shatterpoint, I love building themes and lists to all my games, in middle earth, starwars and warhammer and the backstories for them. And i hate when games (even video games) mess with that and are just like yeah, play what you want it all just fits, demons and space marines sure, Japanese in Nazi german, cool. Like no, stop it!
if shatterpoint terrain is within acceptable limits to silouettes, it could still be an interresting investment for me as a not-yet-started legion player. "free" terrain. :)
Never got into legion, as i was still heavy into Imperial assault at the time. What i have seen of Shatterpoint looks good, i might pick it up but only Galactic civil war era.
Great video. Also, the initial assembly and painting will be much less for Shatterpoint. Thats half the fun for me but could see that being annoying if you are in a hurry to play. Myself i prefer that tactical component of Legion and will probably buy Armada instead of Shatterpoint.
In regards to the amount of space needed to play both games, every shatter point played, takes as much room as Legion due to the amount of cards and extras. The game requires.
AMG’s main selling point for the larger scale was the superior canvas for painters. I painted both versions of Obi Wan basically back to back and I have to admit, they didn’t promise too much. The Shatterpoint minis are easily on par with any other hard plastic manufacturer. I‘m looking forward to playing with beautiful minis 😊
Coming from someone who owns everything Legion has ever released……I’m done buying Legion models. Shatterpoint has better minis, it plays faster and the miniatures are fantastic.
Crabbok, you made this video one year ago. Today you rank the AMG games with Shatterpoint being a DISTANT third. Any chance you can remake this video and tell us what happened to drop Shatterpoint so far from being your #1 mini dudes on a map game???
Never actually tabled an opponent in legion unit the other week when I used two units of fully decked out Dark Troopers...had to apologise to my opposition as didn't realised how bad they were unit I used them
I still think Legion should have been an Armada style game for ground combat. but set in the clone wars. i felt it tred into Imperial Assaults' space, with miniatures being similar sizes, and a lot of similar units.
We all know the answer is Armada.
Better words never spoken.
Haha so true
If only Fantasy Flight knew that answer 😅
This is why you mix legion and armada in a battlefront style galactic conquest style campaign.

I prefer the scale of legion and the army building of it too. Shatterpoint doesn't allow much freedom in army building
I feel like legion will last longer with the devote and constantly growing community.
Thank you for this video it help me decide. Now I'm sure I will buy Shatterpoint maybe even both.
Thank you for making this video. Legion never worked for me, but I am considering Shatterpoint
It could change in the future. Some times these things are fluid. Right now Shatterpoint is new. Maybe in 6 months it'll all be different?
@Crabbok totally fair point, good sir!!
makes me rethink my own opinion on Shatterpoint too, which I very much appreciate.
I need something that's pre-painted, like x-wing/armada
Legion legion legion... maybe I play shatterpoint some time, using my legion minuatures 😅
Like the Juan Solo T-shirt, got the same one. 😁
Chuy’s is the best!!
Agreed! The Elvis Presley combo... Yum!
I'm just getting into Legion and feel like it is much more my play style, but I do want to try Shatterpoint at some point.
If we get Thrawn in Shatterpoint it’d be fun to have Thrawnakin like the books
I never quite got into Legion because I was bummed that I couldn't play a bunch of named characters together, so Shatterpoint will definitely scratch that itch.
One way they could get vehicles in there -- ultimate encounters, like MCP has...
Imperial Assault.
I bought Shatterpoint a week ago and havent played a round yet but I am eger to find out wich game is better for me. Greetings from Germany and keep up the great Content. 👍
Thank You for the comparison!
If there is a terrain piece for a speeder bike we might get a speeder bike hero. I agree this might be as big as they get for vehicles.
I've played legion before and it was ok. I haven't tried Shatter point, but once Grievous comes out I'd really like to try it
In regards to the amount of space needed to play both games, every shatter point played, takes as much room as Legion due to the amount of cards and extras. The game requires.
I feel like Shatterpoint is the Necromunda of Star Wars games. Mostly moving based, smaller teamd, etc.
Legion is still the best, I still want First Order units more than anything, I would love to paint and customize the trooper designs.
Keep the good content up m8
AMG’s main selling point for the larger scale was the superior canvas for painters. I painted both versions of Obi Wan basically back to back and I have to admit, they didn’t promise too much. The Shatterpoint minis are easily on par with any other hard plastic manufacturer.
I‘m looking forward to playing with beautiful minis 😊
Thanks for the video!
Coming from someone who owns everything Legion has ever released……I’m done buying Legion models.
Shatterpoint has better minis, it plays faster and the miniatures are fantastic.
"hey it's dudes on a map" -crabbok
Crabbok, you made this video one year ago. Today you rank the AMG games with Shatterpoint being a DISTANT third. Any chance you can remake this video and tell us what happened to drop Shatterpoint so far from being your #1 mini dudes on a map game???
It was brand new and exciting. I'll probably look at re-ranking things shortly. New games tend to be very exciting at first.
Never actually tabled an opponent in legion unit the other week when I used two units of fully decked out Dark Troopers...had to apologise to my opposition as didn't realised how bad they were unit I used them
Also I can see shatterpoint having vehicles but it will most likely be like MCP and be an epic encounter that a team has to go up against
I still think Legion should have been an Armada style game for ground combat. but set in the clone wars. i felt it tred into Imperial Assaults' space, with miniatures being similar sizes, and a lot of similar units.
I love legion because of the army view looks more similar to the big battles of the films
