  • The 2020 Hyundai Veloster N is a high-performance version of this unique 3-door compact. The N has a 275-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo engine and features upgraded suspension tuning that was honed on the famous Nurburgring. But the basic chassis is sound, so even the base models are fun to drive. This hasn't always been the case, but in 2019 the Veloster's rear suspension was completely rethought and changed to a nicely-designed multilink layout. We'll see that here, along with more details that make the Veloster N a sports compact car that's worth looking at.
    Why am I doing this? I love this stuff. I'm a former suspension development engineer that got into auto journalism, and for several years I created a popular photo feature called a Suspension Walkaround for Inside Line, a now-defunct offshoot of Edmunds.com (no relation). Today I have resumed writing these features under the name Suspension Deep Dive for Autoblog. Between the two, I have written at least 90 of them. Throughout, numerous fans have asked me to make video versions.
    I never seemed to have the time, the equipment, or the confidence to get in front of the camera, but I got over that by hosting at least 80 professionally-produced videos over the last three years on the Edmunds You Tube channel. If you like it, tell your friends, click subscribe, share links, give it a like and check out the other videos on my channel, which is simply called Dan Edmunds. And I take requests. I can't promise that I can get my hands on any car or truck, but the odds are good. And the more views I get, the more horsepower I'll have when requesting cars to examine.

      Horsepower gets all the headlines, but I've always thought that suspension and tires have more to do with the personality and fun-to-drive factor.

    These suspension walkarounds are awesome. Please keep doing them!
    I know they're old now, but would love to see a video on a double-wishbone era Honda (1988-2000), like a Civic or an Integra (Type R would be the ultimate).

    This is one of the most informative and easy to watch, technical video on the suspension of a car. Great job on this video and subscribed for more like this.
    Also, the veloster N looks to be an amazing car to drive, regardless the great pricing on it.

    Veloster N is such a good car.But I hope the suspension could be a bit softer for daily drive.

    Great stuff. Hope to see more of Hyundai's N line on the road. Looks like a solid car for the money. Couple for the wish list would be C8 Vette and Civic Type R.

    • @DanEdmunds

      Yes to both! The C8 is going to be awhile because the west coast press car fleet never got their allocation before the shutdown. As for the Type R, I totally spaced on asking for one. I will look into it right away.

    Hey Dan I've really enjoyed your written deep-dives, and just discovered your videos; great supplement to the super detailed write-ups! I'm considering a Veloster N so this was perfect timing.
    One thing that would be great to see in the videos is real-time steering kinematics as the wheel is turned, would that be ok to do when the car is on the jack stand?
    Also, a deep dive on a torsion beam would be neat to see - maybe Mazda3 considering it's the current state-of-the-art and they've been able to tune it so well. They aren't the enthusiast set-up, but pretty fascinating engineering.

      Which, in my opinion, is no bad thing. Shame to see Mazda backtracking to a twist beam under the Mazda 3.

    The Veloster N is a well-made car, and the Veloster N DCT is a much improved car. You can look forward to the Veloster N DCT(Dual Clutch Transmisson) model. For your information, the shift speed is so fast that it is similar to BMW M.

    I was looking for these kind of informative suspension videos, for a very long time. Great, keep doing them. I was wondering, since you mentioned you are not a big fan of the twist beam suspensions, how do some manufacturers pull out such a great handling characteristics with twist beam suspension type? For example, like Renault Megane RS, Ford Fiesta ST or Honda Civic Type R FK2?

    • @DanEdmunds
      @DanEdmunds  4 роки тому +6

      In many cases, the performance versions have to make do with whatever the base car has. Twist beams are mainly chosen because they're cheap, and they do an OK job in lightweight vehicles. But controlling deflection and reining in compliance & roll oversteer isn't easy, especially if you're trying to make the ride agreeable at the same time. One favors stiff pivot bushings while the other needs softer bushings. Now, performance versions can get away with a hard ride that comes with the firmer bushings needed to minimize some of the toe changes. And in such cars a livelier rear end might actually be tolerated. There are some clever new twist beams out there, and a good tuning engineer with a decent budget and a deep library of parts can make a go of it, but if you ask any of them they'd probably want something like this as a starting point instead. I've not driven those cars, (Except a Fiesta ST, once) but I did race a twist beam GTI back in the day. Hiked the inside wheel around every corner. I'd rather have four wheels on the ground than three. ;) Basically, a twist beam is just a big stabilizer bar with the wheels at the ends.

    It’s common for people to disparage a strut front suspension as “low budget”. Yes, it’s generic and simple. But the Porsche 911 and just about every BMW has had a strut suspension for decades. It’s all in the tuning where it counts; bushings, subframe strength and geometry, control arm design, camber, caster, toe etc.

    Thanks, that was a great review and very informative. My son just purchased a 2020 N with the performance package. Fun car, sadly he recently hit a very deep pot hole, damaged the front tire and wheel. I removed the wheel so it could be repaired. I was looking at the suspension in the front and rear while I was under there. I was impressed with the tec and size of the front and rear brakes.

    Nissan 300zx z34 product brochure said engineers used supercomputer to design its suspension. Care to guess how 2004 BMW 525i suspension was design? They feel so similar in driving dynamics, I for sure am thinking BMW hired an ex Nissan engineer. But you are the expert so please oblige.

  • @davidfarmer
    @davidfarmer 4 роки тому

    So my best guess is that the "blade" trailing arm actually flexes left to right to allow that smaller lower link to control the toe? If it was rigid, and there were only top and bottom links, it would be constrained, however it would also toe out as it swung up or down from the neutral position. Its funny how many production vehicles have suspensions that would never work with purely spherical ball joints, only bushings would allow them to work.
    I think my Lexus ct has something similar to this setup in the rear as well, which surprised me considering its a Prius in a Lexus suit. I would have thought they would use the twist beam from the Prius, but they stole the rear suspension from scion IM.

    • @DanEdmunds
      @DanEdmunds  4 роки тому +2

      Yes, the big front bushing can move laterally to take up some of that. The blade's c-channel cross-section section does end some distance before the bolted joint with the upright, but I still don't see that flexing much when there are rubber bushings in the mix.

      Not in my book! ;) Doors are for people and open sideways! And 4-door hatchback applied to the Veloster actually proves the point because there are many cars with 4 doors and a hatch in back! The unique part about the Veloster is it has three real doors!

      @@93455Driver You can read about that on Autoblog. I did a written Suspension Deep Dive aka Walkaround for them on the Supra before I started doing videos.. Curious to know it that answers your question.

      Dan Edmunds Many thanks, definitely helped answer the question about the differences between the Supra and Z4. As per the article coupe vs convertible, plus tuning differences would help differentiate the handling. Lots of great detail in the article, though admit a steep learning curve for a part time gear head like myself.

I would highly appreciate anyone’s recommendation as it is very interesting for me to listen and learn about why things are designed the way they are. I know what I’ve written was hard to follow as my English is not as natural as I would like it to be. I am a young car enthusiast who would love to have a better understanding of how each and every parts work in harmony with each other as well as what are their main functionalities are. Thanks in advance, cheers!

    What's the ride on the N in the softest setting? After driving a 2012 Mazdspeed3 for 181,600 miles (stock), I'm debating on making the N my next car.

    • @DanEdmunds
      @DanEdmunds  4 роки тому +1

      I haven't driven a Mazdaspeed 3 since it came out, but I remember it being stiffer than the N in its soft setting. But the N still feels sporty -- in s good way. Mine had the bigger 19" wheel and summer tire option, so if you are concerned about that or have to deal with rough roads (or need all-season tires because of conditions) you might stick with the standard N tire 18-inch size and get yourself a little more sidewall.
