You know the bore is gone when the bushing/sleeve just comes out. They are a very very tight fit.

I’m no expert but you are supposed to remove/clean the surface before the welding new material in a line bore and with any welding. The above work will cause a thin tin like material to fall away from the surface in a very short period of time.
