@@onlythetruth883 I'll try to give you a quick summary of the island's history. The Spanish arrived in 1492 and conquer the native Tainos. Most of the Tainos die from disease as well as from slavery starvation and war. The Spanish take Taino women as wives creating the first generation of Latinos. The Spanish begin to import African slaves. The Spanish mix with the African women as well. Some African slaves revolt and join what remains of the Tainos and mix with them. Now you have the foundation of the mixed race Dominican people. Dominicans are named after the colonies capital Santo Domingo. The colony fights invasions from other European powers. Eventually the French pirates take the small island of Tortuga which is north of what is now Haiti. The whole island at this time belonged to Spain and the ancestors of the Dominican people. The Spanish crown for the most part ignored the island to focus on its conquest of the main lands. The island fell into poverty. The Dominican inhabitants began to trade with the pirates. The Spanish crown didn't like this and ordered the burning of the western settlements to force the population closer to the capital city. The Devastation of Osario. The French pirates now are able to get a foothold on the west side of the island. The Spanish of the East and French of the West fight but eventually sign a treaty. The French begin to import African slaves. The French are outnumbered by their slaves 20 to 1. The French revolution happens. The ideals of the revolution spread to their colony. The Haitian revolution happens. The Spanish secede from the island giving their colony to the French living many of its inhabitants to fend for themselves. The Haitians invaded the east for the first time in 1801. They hold control of the whole island for a year. Napoleon's brother-in-law arrives with thousands of French troops and some mixed race Haitians who fled in the early stages of the revolution. Search the War of Knives to learn about the internal race conflict among the Haitians. Most of the French troops including Napoleon's brother-in-law died from yellow fever. The Haitians claim independence. In 1804 they invaded again. This time they committed a massacre known as El Degüello de Moca or the beheading of Moca on their way to the capital city of Santo Domingo which is still held by the French. The Haitians flee as a French flotilla arrives. Haiti splits in two after the murder of Dessalines. The black faction in the north and the mulattos in the south. In 1809 the Dominicans retake the east in the name of Spain kicking out the French. Haiti reunites the north and south. In 1821 Dominicans claimed independence from Spain. One month later the most notable Haitian invasion happened under Boyer and the Haitians occupy for 22 years making second class citizens of the Dominicans. They close the churches and university, raise taxes to pay their debt to France, prevent the white Dominicans from owning property, prevent Dominicans from speaking Spanish, and impose forced labor. Dominicans revolt and claim independence from Haiti. Dominicans outnumbered in some battles 5 to 1 defeat every Haitian invasion that followed for the next 12 years.

Haiti's problems are off their own making and they have no excuse. After their revolution, they reinstated slavery and plantation system on their country, invaded and enslaved the DR, curtailed education and civic liberty of their country, and mismanaged their economy. The French debt is not even that significant. Mexico lost land and had to pay reparations to the USA after their war. Germany had to pay reparations for two world wars. The thing is, Haiti already paid their "debt" at around Indonesia's independence. Meaning that Haiti had a head start of 50 years compared to Indonesia. But they failed it. But, after researching a little bit, I found that that mission was never made out of compassion for a suffering nation. The United States was fearing mass immigration after the disaster but they didn't want to use their own army as they were busy in other global affairs, mostly in the Middle East, so the UN picked Brazil, who accepted the mission under the naive hope that that would give us a diplomatic advantage and/or a higher seat in one of these world organizations (I don't remember well, but something like that). In the end, none of Brazil's interests were really met, Haiti became hell on Earth after the army left, and Haitians continue to flee the country on a large scale.

But no critical number of people ever wanted to bother trying to affect the outcome -- it was easier to assume the people making the events happen were competent and honest.
There's no reason to assume Haitians are any more proactive than we are.

    The narrator is correct.
Why Haiti began and remains poor (pt 4 of 5).
    Response to some Marxist objections.
    (1) In 1804 there were embargoes against Haiti by France, England, USA. However these embargoes were quite porous since private merchants (English, French, American, Spanish) were still doing commerce with Haiti. In 1807 English abolished TransAtlantic slave trade and in 1808 England ended the Haiti embargo; by 1814 more than 80% of Haitian trade was with England. Besides in the 1800's England and Spain were at war with France so little military naval effort was focused on Haiti. Haiti had no military navy, no merchant marine so Haiti had no capability to pursue merchant trade, no capability to project military naval power on its own. Haiti was at the mercy of others for maritime trade.
    (2) Many nations, when newly established, were not given a "welcome basket" by the community of Nations. The USA recognized the USSR in 1933 and the USSR was established in 1917. And yet there was USA-USSR trade before 1933. The USA recognized the People's Republic of China in 1979 and the PRC was established in 1949. And yet there was USA-PRC trade before 1979. These trades occur despite ideological differences. These trades occur because the USSR and the PRC had goods/services to offer to the community of Nations. By 1804, Haiti utterly wrecked its economic infrastructure and had little to offer to trade with the community of Nations.
    (3) Conflict of visions between the populace (ex-slaves) and the Haitian elite (White, Mixed, Black). The ex-slaves wanted nothing more than a piece of land and cultivate it for their basic needs. Essentially the ex-slaves wanted a Subsistence Economy, a Survival Economy. Nation building was not on the mind of the ex-slaves. Nation building was on the minds of the elite who knew fully well that Haiti cannot be totally self-sufficient and thus needed to rebuild the economy to produce goods/services to trade with other Nations. The elite wanted to rebuild the plantation system and the ex-slaves wanted none of that!!! Henri Christophe (Black) was able to impose the plantation system in the North but at the cost of raising anger of the peasant (ex-slave) class. The peasant anger became so great that Henri Christophe committed suicide in 1820. Ironically, Northern Haiti under Christophe (Black) became wealthier (relatively) than Southern Haiti under Pétion (Mulatto) who pushed for Land Redistribution, not Plantation system.
    (4) Marxists sweep under the rug the occupation of the Dominican Republic. Why? Because it does not fit the narrative of Haiti being a victimized innocent. Haiti occupied the Dominican Republic from 1821 to 1844. Haitian president Boyer confiscated all church property, all lands owned by Whites, and deported all foreign clergy. Oh, but that was the second invasion by Haiti; in 1805, the Haitian Army invaded the Dominican Republic, reached Santo Domingo, and made a fast retreat using the destroy and burn tactics much favored by J.J Dessalines. Why the retreat? There were reports that a French flotilla was coming towards Port-au-Prince. Even after 1844 the Haitians did not give up; there were several minor military excursions into the Dominican Republic. Militarism, combined with Subsistence Economy, deepens Poverty.
    (5) Reparations to France: the Marxists' favorite bugaboo. Were the reparations the fundamental cause of Haiti's poverty? Answer: NO. Haiti was already entrenched in Poverty by 1826 when France demanded reparations. Mind you, the 1826 reparation demand was the THIRD request; the previous 2 were made to Christophe (refused), to Pétion (refused). The third time was the charm for France. Haiti's 1821 invasion of the Dominican Republic (DR) was a strategic error. Military adventurism and a moribund economy made for a very bad mix. France was not stupid. After 5 yrs of Haiti being stuck in the DR quagmire, France popped up (again!) and made the reparations demand. Haiti cannot fight both the French and the Dominicans. Haiti decided to pay reparations. France asked only for 1 year's worth of colonial output. In 1820, Haiti's output was only 1/40 of colonial output; that it took Haiti more than 100 years to pay the reparations is no surprise. From 1826-1844 Haiti plundered the DR of its wealth to pay as much as it can for the reparations.
    (6) Often politically driven programs do not bring Economic or Societal Progress. What feels good usually does no good. Embracing victimhood (politically popular as of 2024 AD) brings no kind of prosperity. Become a victim and win a prize!!! Victims of the World, Unite!!!

@@AngelVasquez-nw8zf Actually, marxism is more than just that. Part of it sure involves economics, but marxism itself is a system as a whole, with a method of socioeconomic analysis. Let's not forget it is also a political philosophy, through which its aspects (like the economic one) can be implemented.
In other words, it is not a body of opinion about the history of Haiti on its own, but it certainly is the lens through which some people analyze the situation (and needless to say that it goes for everything, not just Haiti)

      Also gold and oil.
There are parts of this country where after their last big earthquake Oil actually leaked from people's backyards.
There are at least 3 Presidents that tried to exploit this Oil and guess who ordered them that they do not have the right to? 🦅🦅🦅
There is a woman of power in the US who has the rights to all the gold in the country in a way that not even the Haitian government has the right to oversee what her Company is doing.
Every time there is a president that wants to nationalize all the resources he is either taken down or a commando of foreign soldiers just land there and exile him.
Let's also not forget their last president who got murdered in his home by a commando of ex-Colombian soldiers hired by an American security company yeah those people are screwed.

If colonialism was bad, then why isnt Hong Kong a failed state despite the fact that it was all rubble after WW2 while Haiti wasnt in the same ordeal after WW2?

As a Haitian American internal corruption is a major reason and probably the biggest reason to the demise of Haiti. But to your point on Germany and France having to also pay reparations and not becoming failed states in doing so Is completely different than in the case of Haiti. France and Germany in their rebuilding had allies and continuous trade and support from the U.S. and other European countries. While Haiti did not have much in terms of allies and economic support. Heck when the U.S. invaded and occupied Haiti they stole Haiti’s gold reserves. So I think it is a little more nuanced than what you said. But totally agree corruption and incompetency of Haitian leaders is a problem and should never be left out in these types of discussions.

Haiti also had good economy in the past, that's how Haiti was able to helped about 13 countries in south America to obtain their independence. plus, from 1947 to late fifties, Haiti was the top economy in the whole Caribbean. also, Google Frederick Douglass speech on Haiti, and see what kind of economy Haiti has back in the late eighteen hundred. haiti also used it's own funds to helped those south American countries.

    The narrator is correct.
Why Haiti began and remains poor (pt 1 of 5).
During its colonial days, Haiti’s slave plantations supplied over half of the world’s sugar.
But after the slaves gained their freedom from the brutal regime and the country declared independence in 1804, sugar disappeared from the economy as small farms produced coffee, subsistence agriculture, and food for local markets.
In 1950, when Haiti was at least producing some sugar, its exports were far behind comparable countries: sugar exports in Puerto Rico were 35 times higher, and in the Dominican Republic exports were 14 times higher.
A common explanation for Haiti’s resistance to producing sugar is that Haitian culture rejected the industry because of the associated historical traumas. However Haitians went to the DR, Cuba, even Puerto Rico to harvest sugar cane so there was not much of a cultural stigma towards the sugar industry.
A major contributor to Haiti’s failure to restore its sugar economy was historical property rights institutions that created significant transaction costs to starting large-scale farms.
3 post-Independence property rights institutions: (1) a large redistribution of the former French plantations; (2) inheritance patterns on peasant land that gave every family member a veto right to selling it; and (3) a constitutional ban on foreigners owning land in Haiti.
But the property rights institutions in Haiti are important because they were not established by colonists; instead, they were created by a newly independent nation in reaction to colonists. These are post-colonial institutions.
From 1900 to 1960, sugar accounted for 76 percent of Cuba’s export value, 51 percent of the Dominican Republic’s, 46 percent of Puerto Rico’s, and 26 percent of Jamaica’s. Sugar contributed only 5 percent to Haiti’s exports. Less than 10% of Haiti's sugar production was exported whereas for the other Caribbean countries about 90% was exported. Since 1987 (demise of HASCO) sugar in Haiti has been a cash crop raised by peasants rather than by large-scale plantations.

Not a former colony. Thats why you see in all across la Hispaniola , Complex infraestructure . As an additional historical context haiti had this massive tax that france put over the new independent republican new goverment of Haiti and this was the actual reason (more than the prescense of any european empire at the moment) of why Jean Pierr Boyer (leader of the haitians) invaded my country to pay that tax and get the resources of la Hispaniola

I think this lies more on how the Vietnamese treat the French appear to provide a contrast to that of Haitians. While both were French colonies, the Vietnamese demanded nothing from France to pay indemnity for war even though the damages France did to Vietnam was so horrific; whereas the Haitians are still holding this grudge because of being exploited, yet they did very little to improve their own country.

The problem of Haiti is a lot of things. In part it's the French for screwing over at the time the newly independent land, but at the same time, you cannot purely blame them, as Haiti has been independent for like 200 years. More than enough time to navigate through this hardship. Other former French colonies despite being poor too, are doing a billion times better than Haiti. Senegal for example is a beacon in stability and econolic wealth. Sure, is it still a poor country? Yes, but they have a working democracy, economically the country is on the up and the infrastructure is compared to other countries in the region actually not bad. And this goes for a lot of other former colonies. Take Botswana for example, it's a good preforming former British colony. It is however worth saying that the British didn't sabotage their former colonies as badly as France had. But still, there are examples to be given. Haiti suffers deeply from the tribal mentality that African countries also suffer from. And it shows.

Okay, sure - those don't help. But Tokyo is also under both of those conditions: they face typhoons every summer, and the city is situated right on top of the Median Tectonic Line, so it's down to blind luck that they haven't had a magnitude-7 (major) earthquake recently. Somehow, though, that city has so far largely managed to avoid being run by a cannibal warlord.

    The narrator is correct.
Why Haiti began and remains poor (pt 3 of 5).
    (E) Subsistence Economy. The old and recent historical data show that exports are a small part of Haiti's economy. Settling for a Subsistence Economy, a Survival Economy is OK. There are tribes living the Stone Age style deep in the Amazon forest and in the jungles of the Congo and Papua New Guinea for thousands of years. Subsistence Economy can be done. However the Planet is populated with Predatory Nations. Fortunately for the Stone Age inhabitants of the Amazon, Central Africa and Papua New Guinea, they have the military protection of the sovereign countries in which they live. The Amish lives in a somewhat Subsistence Economy and there is no Amish Nation: the Amish community is part of the USA and is thus protected by the USA. Trying to maintain proper military power with a Subsistence Economy cannot be sustained for long.
    (F) The low trust character of Haitian society. The Haitian and French revolutions have a few things in common: they are both based on J.E.A.R. = Jealousy, Envy, Anger, Resentment. JEAR is the blood of Socialism and Communism. The concern for "equality" is the launchpad for JEAR. Words "equal(ity)", "democracy" appears
    _________________________________Equal(ity)____Democracy
    US Declaration of Independence_____1_____________0
    US Constitution____________________0_____________0
    French Constitution 1793___________3_____________1
    French Constitution 1958__________10_____________4
    Haiti Constitution 1805___________3_____________0
    Haiti Constitution 1987___________7_____________4
All the freed slaves in Haiti were given a plot of land and then the fun began. The Ancients had it correct: give 3 people equal amount of money at sunrise and they will become unequal before sunset. Dessalines was on his way to deal with some land speculators when he was assassinated. The point is: large-scale farms are much more efficient than small-scale farms and cooperative farms in Haiti were difficult to establish and these rare cooperatives did not last long. Thus time after time, Haiti falls back to a Subsistence Economy.
Are there today (2024 AD) large landowners (you know, them evil, nasty, greedy oligarchs!)? Yes. However, in 1950, 80% of the Artibonite Valley (where rice is grown) was still in the hands of the small farmers. The national economic dynamics is still dominated by small-land farmers.
The Amish, again. Amish companies are usually no more than 5 employees. Yet said small companies frequently combine together for large tasks. The trust aspect of Amish culture is rare in Haitian society. Mind you, Amish runs a mainly Subsistence Economy, not an Industrial Economy. If Haiti were Amish country, Haiti would be in much better shape. Mind you, the Amish are not warmongers and they would not invade the Dominican Republic.
Summary. Saint Domingue was a super producer of sugar in the late 1700's because of large-scale farming. Then came Independence of 1804. Land Reform: everyone gets equal share of the Land. Consequence of Land Reform: small-scale farming which brings about at best a Subsistence Economy, a Survival Economy. Haiti thus lost the status of Sugar Super-Producer and started on the Road to Poverty. Constant political turmoil is characteristic of a low-trust society. The low trust nature of Haitian culture makes difficult the establishment of cooperative farming needed for economic growth.

The french reparations were light on paper : equivalent to one year of estimated profits (before the resolution) for the sugar industry, and were signed 20 years after the revolution. Had Haiti put its main industry at least partially back on track, it should have been dealt with within a few years.
Compare with cotton production in the USA. It utterly collapsed in the 1860s due to events, and 5 years after it was done, it had bounced back over antebellum levels. Despite very similar conditions (a plantation-based industry that saw both war and slaves being freed). Haiti failed in 20+ years even a fraction of what the Southern USA did completely in 5.
It's a sign that ever since the start, Haiti has been utterly unable of managing its economy.

The worst thing that happened to the Dominicans was the Devastation of Osorio in 1606. Leaving the wester part of the island vacant is the reason why the french were able to slowly invade and then later on brought today's haitians after Spain was forced to sign the Treaty of Ryswick in 1697. If it wasn't for this then the entire island would've been inhabited only by Dominicas as it was before the french/haitian arrived similar to Cuba and Puerto Rico.
Many people don't want to admit it but haitians are pretty much similar to their colonizers, the French. Just like the french, the haitians slowly invaded the easter part of the island to the point DR had to give them five towns that are Hincha(now Hinche), Juana Méndez (now Ouanaminthe), San Rafael de La Angostura (now Saint Raphael), San Miguel de la Atalaya (now Saint Michel de Atalaye), Las Caobas (now Lascahobas) and Veladero (now Belladere) in 1936. The Parsley massacre was disgusting and no one can deny it yet we can't also deny the reason Trujillo order the death of haitians in DR was because they kept invading after been given five towns the previous year. Many people also forget that Trujillo was a Dominican dictator of haitian descendant through his maternal grandmother Altagracia Julia Molina Chevalier.
