Modern 2.0 Papalymo Totolymo and Urianger Augurelt are often optional dialogue instead of mandatory MSQ. A lot of the removed quests centered on the scions. They tend to drop the two dollar words, and I guess not everybody liked reading those. Sometimes it seems Reborn was compiled from an AI trained on Word-a-Day calendars. They both become easier to read over time, but they're best when they're not trying to be approachable. Noraxia: I loved watching Noraxia's arc. She hung out in the warehouse and cast illusion magic, becoming an awkward, green-haired human for a while. I cried during her final quest - she wouldn't have joined the scions if not for the player's actions, so when you had to return her to the sylphs, it felt that I was entrusted with her care, and had failed all of Little Solice. Y'shtola Rhul: Her half-sister, Y'mhitra Rhul works for the Sons of Saint Coinach and trains Arcanists into Summoners. She's their Curious Gorge and you can learn a bit more about both of them if you want to level a new job. It's a two-for-one because you level Scholar at the same time as Summoner, they share an XP bar but not a questline. Nashu Mhakaracca: I love her. "Who is more foolish? The fool or the fool who follows him?" Haurchefant Greystone: I wish chat wouldn't have said anything because (redacted). His personality is completely rewritten outside of Japan, because we don't really have room for the lovable pervert archtype. But just know in every scene he was hitting on you, relentlessly.
I actually did not know that about Haurchenfant. That's probably for the best I guess lol? I suppose I didn't think of the noexia line in that light. It really does feel like we failed them
It's only by working through to Endwalker that you realise just how much was set up with these characters back in ARR. Would love to see your ranking post Endwalker. Will be..... no, that's spoilers...
I'm so glad to see another Papa Meow enjoyer. I had a similar experience: my first few tries of FFXIV were always in Gridania. Which as it turns out, is probably the worst starting zone. But the banter between Papalymo and Yda was one of the few pleasant moments.
This was a curious collection of characters. It's got Coils and Hildibrand but is conspicuously missing Crystal Tower and most of the post-ARR MSQ itself. Keeping those missing parts in mind, the opinions were interesting and it'll be amusing to see how things changed as you learn more.
Jokes aside, you should do this each expansion. And once you have beat Dawntrail in about 2000 years, you should do a overall tier list, an on average type thing.
You're gonna like Briardien even more during his 3.x patch quests, you learn a bit about how he operates and I think he's overdue for a comeback with Dawntrail.
I'm surprised after having watched you where you put Alphy. Most people don't much like him in ARR. We'll see where he sits with you later. I have two notes about the twins and Thancred. The twins were actually on the boat or carriage with you when you first start the game. They don't speak, but they are there with you from the moment you open the game pretty much. Now Thancred. I think Thancred was one of my early likes in the game. I mean, I get its not everybody's cup of tea, but every time I returned to the Waking Sands, I always checked what he was doing. No one else had as interesting of idle actions. Drunkenly sleeping at a table mumbling in his sleep. Playfully tossing a knife around. Getting literally cat fought over by women who look suspiciously like Minfilia, Y'shtola, and Urianger hilariously. I really liked that on my first playthrough. It added so much personality to him. I wouldnt put him at the level of certain other characters, but it made the world feel alive to have his actions change like that. For the record, Cid was my favorite in ARR. I jokingly called him Daddy, because of how swole he was. It really is his expansion. As an additional edit, I thought you might appreciate to know a touch about the prae experience before they changed it. As you put it, Hydaelyn is our failsafe...but in the original, she's really not. In the original, she only helped when ultima was almost used, and that act was what drained her strength. Through that, it became clear that she was struggling to stay afloat. But the trade off was that her presence and characterization wasnt as strong. If she directly saves your ass several times, she is putting her money where her mouth is. I liked to hear your perspective here, since my impression of her was so different. Additional prae facts. My boyfriend once got into a prae run, and then the fire alarm triggered. He got back after over a half an hour later and Gaius was still. Talking. I used to vaccuum and handwash dishes between pulls. It was common practice to pull the first room, run as fast as you could, and teleport without killing the trash. 8 people just booking it to the teleporter until one got caught and died before they could. Mechanics were also a lot simpler. The final Lahabrea fight was with the entire raid of 8.
Your character opinions lined up closely with mine in ARR. But I look forward to hearing your thoughts on them in all the expansions. Please update us! I'm especially dying to hear your thoughts about one particular character in ARR. You'll find out in Stormblood. Actually two. Honestly, I was a little bit meh on most of the characters in ARR, but Heavensward and beyond was when I truly started loving the characters. Some gave me a sinus infection because I cried so much in Shadowbringers. Had to get antibiotics, because of Final Fantasy XIV. LOL. And then I had to get another round in Endwalker. I'm not lying, that really happened! 🤣
Let's be real, Y'shtola's cool and all, but she's a pretty static character. Even when the focus is on her she rarely develops or becomes emotionally engaged and engaging in the same way the other scions do. She's just the sassy cat scion
It's funny you should mention it, but [REDACTED] gets way more character development in [REDACTED] after [REDACTED] which really hammers in the theme of [REDACTED]. Really makes you feel [DATA EXPUNGED].

lowkey I hated Godbert at first because he has a small side quest you can encounter before level 50 where he annoyed me so badly, and then he showed up in Hildibrand and I was like 'NO NOT THIS GUY', but it turned out he was actually pretty cool as a character.

Myrlweb is my favorite of the leaders, but more for things the msq only lightly touches on. It's very hard to tell a nation of pirates, "Listen up we're all going straight", and she's doing a pretty decent job pivoting Limsa away from a criminal haven to an actually respectable nation.

OH! I dunno if anyone has said to you or not yet, but you should grind out Lancer/Dragoon and do the ARR class quests; it introduces you to a character who becomes a big player going forward (and it's neat to see how the dialog reflects that you've met before)
