I bought this album when it came out in the 80's and still break it out from time to time. Scottish rockers!
Mark Brzezicki is the drummer.
He was Big Country's drummer for the majority of their career.
Mark is a Polish-English drummer, who did mostly studio sessions.
He is Big Country's "clock."
He, also, is the drummer on The Cult's, legendary, LOVE album (just one of many he has contributed to, over the years!) -save for the single "She Sells Sanctuary" -which was ORIGINAL Cult drummer, Nigel Preston's FINAL recording with the band (before departing. - The band never had "a regular" drummer after that time (The same way Roxy Music could never find a permanent Bass player, after their initial player left! 🤷🤷)-).
Brzezicki is one of those: "known by many, even they don't KNOW they know him/...don't recognize him by name" players!
He is rock-solid, groovy, hits hard
and a long-time, personal, favorite of mine!
[I discovered him via this, debut Big Country album!🤘🤘]
Stuart Adamson (whose sad, unnecessary, demise has been related by others on this page. 😢😭) was a genius song-writer and singer! and an unrecognizedly superb guitarist!!!!💜💜💜🔥
Adamson started in a great punk-era band called: The Skids
[whose work you would enjoy checking-out!🤘🤘].
Adamson and the other guitarist in the band, Bruce Watson. formed Big Country after The Skids fell apart.
The guitar sounds they employ, here, are indeed, designed to feel/remind one of: bagpipes (a primary instrumental sound associated with their home: Scotland).
The sound is the result of specific guitars through a very specific (and rare) effects unit, which they found had the ability to make such textures and sounds, via guitar!
The band, also, uses the e-bow; an uncommon electric guitar effect, made by a handheld device, which affects the guitar (although that is NOT used on this song, at all!!).
Big Country are well-worth diving into the catalog of!
(...and Mark Brzezicki is a drummer whose talents and skills I am pretty sure you would appreciate, as well!!
Look up his, voluminous, catalogue!!!! [beginning, as mentioned, with this band's cat. Big Country and with The Cult's LOVE (-"She Sells Sanctuary")!])
Stuart Adamson was the lead singer and sadly took his own life in Honolulu 2001. Big Country were huge in the UK, Europe and a few other places but sadly the US consider them a one hit wonder. They have a huge back catalogue and no song will disappoint.
One of first bands to make the bagpipe sound mainstream in pop music by altering the guitar.
Well, they didn't use bagpipes. Stuart Adamson used a pedal called a pitch transposer to make his guitar sound like bagpipes.
However, Big Country was a great band and had a sizeable following in Salt Lake City.
@@notmyrealname1730 I never said they did use bagpipes - I have now clarified my post for you.
@@notmyrealname1730 Interesting. I lived in SLC for quite a few years and was with Big Country at the very beginning: from the Crossing on down. I never knew I was part of a sizable following.
It sucks! The band was cool and Stuart reminded me of the lead singer from A Ha. What a cool time and talent! The music will live on forever!
This is essentially Celtic Rock which was beginning to emerge in Scotland, Ireland, and the Maritime provinces in Canada. Peter Wishart, a keyboardist for Big Country, went on to play with Runrig, one of Scotland's greatest Celtic Rock bands. In the early days Big Country was often on the same bill as U2.
Saw them the year this came out, maybe the following year? They were Scottish. They were also amazingly brilliant live.
Wow, my hometown heroes, my idols and my friends, BUG COUNTRY. They are from Dunfermline, Scotland. Thank you sooooo much for featuring them. One MASSIVE mistake you made though, and you're not the only one so don't panic lol, IT'S NOT BLEEPING BAGPIPES! That is an incorrect comparison that people have made for 40 years unfortunately. What you ARE hearing though, is a rock version of the tones of Scottish folk music, played entirely on fiddle and accordion that we all grew up hearing here. Bagpipes are entirely an instrument of war here in Scotland and Stuart Adamson was the most anti war human on this planet so the comparison always really upset the band and the fans, so now you know the truth. Stuart was a great friend to me since I met him aged 11 in '83 in Dunfermline High Street.
Great song, one of many by a great band. Even better live. 💙💙💙
They're Scottish and I love how they make the guitar riffs sound a bit like bag pipes. Fond memories here too of when this came out but I was in my early 20's.
Peace from SF
Their song “The Storm” from the same album as this is just amazing and a fan favourite, the bagpipes sound was done using a guitar effects pedal
Bagpipes YES. There were others who did have similar vibes at this time - the "everyone sing the chorus together" kind of rock. I'm thinking of The Alarm ("68 Guns") or Wang Chung (probably "Everybody Have Fun" is most popular by their best song by a mile is "Dance Hall Days.") or the Kinks song "Come Dancing". They took the coke-fueled crowd energy of 80s pop, swiped some soul and the horn section from the Motown records they grew up on, and topped it all off with a layer of simple 50s style hooks and chords. I feel like this era really repudiated both the dreary singer-songwriter elements of the 70s AND the ornate theatricality of prog or jam bands and just made these sugar-coated candy pellets of song - they sounded kind of uniform but man, were they tasty.
The Hooters
Worth checking out some live footage of Big Country. They always sounded great live. The Storm would be a good one to try next.
Great reaction very nostalgic for me took me right back - my fave by Big Country is a track called Chance a social commentary on the attitudes of teenager’s experience of society in the late 70’s early 80’s - love to hear guitar lead play bagpipe notes and chords from the Scottish Highlands - Reminds me also of the Scottish band Runrig - they Loch Lomond
I love that bagpipes-like guitar sound. No wonder they are from Scotland.
My friend, if you are a drummer...... This is the rabbit hole you want to go down!
You say in there it just sounds so fun back then.... I agree 100% it does and I thought of that while listening to 80s songs today.
I know they're Scottish... I've always loved how the guitars sound like bag pipes and pizzicata (sp?) strings. It's a rock and roll reel, y'all.
So glad you came back to them, Chod! They were a favorite back in the 80s.
One of my all time favorite rocksong
You're saying just what I was thinking. A happy feeling type of music. Formed in Scotland in 1981. Unfortunately they were basically a one-hit wonder.
Another so called scot talking nonsense what about fields of fire ,Chance .Look away I could go on
I always loved this song, best one hit wonder ever!
One hit wonder what about fields of fire .Chance Look away. Harvest home 😂😂😂😂😂
It’s also interesting to hear bagpipe music played on a guitar!
AC/DC used the real thing.. Now that's cool
@@stevenseul361 and of course, they have a Scottish background:)
@@Isleofskye Good point yes they did..
scottish bagpipes....best new artist in 80 something ..cant remember the actual year...the crossing is one of the best albums..EVER!...wonderland is another great song from them
Brings me way back in the MTV days!!
Hi Chod! The band are Scottish and they very big in the 80s.
Yeah, they even played Butlin's Big Rock Weekender last year. I went but got too pissed up and missed them.
Hey, Rock n Roll. :)
An oldie but goody.
Great song.
I was a teen In the US army when this song came out. Living in the Army barracks at that time my roommate and I ordered cable TV service for our room. MTV had just launched and this was one of the videos that's was shown. It was Always a great song to listen too. In fact From MTV I made cassett music mixes for my Walkman player. Lol Walkman. Wow😅😅😅
I feel like society was generally happier in the 80’s-early 90’s.. life was less complicated. You watch concerts etc from that era before phones and people were more engaged in the moment-we’ve lost some of that
Great song
Sadly, here in the States, the only tracks I remember that got radio play were this track and Fields of Fire. The Crossing is a great album. I also like their albums, Steeltown, and The Seer.
More Volume Chod. On The Track.
Chod you need to react to this song live on without the aid of a safetynet .recorded in glasgow .do yourself a favor it is outstanding
Ive got two friends who play bagpipes. Big dudes who wear kilts. Yeah I’m not getting my ass kicked for making fun of that 😂
And I’m not even sure those are pipes 😂
If you listen to the album version, you will get a bit more of a drum intro.
Yeah it's a great intro... best part of the song... Pity they left it out for this clip.
❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Bagpipe sound is an E-bow. Electromagnet r uns along the nickel syrings
Not quite - they used the ebow in other songs but that's not what gives the bagpipe sound. Check the intro to The Storm, that's the ebow
@@takenoheroes228I have an E-bow. It is that sound
In "The Storm" it might be keyboard
...one of my favored songs
I had everything on tape
Mark Brzezicki, drummer
a very original band that had unlimited potential. But their leader committed suicide.
Dude, the drummer in this band was fantastic. Mark Brzezicki. (thanks to Markysumm below for giving me the correct name). Love this particular song. There's a song they did called "Wonderland", listen to the 12" version which isolates the drum track for a bit, one of the last great 80s drummers before everyone lost their feel! The late 70s-early 80s had so many good ones: Stewart Copeland, Martin Chambers, Pete Thomas, Clem Burke, the guy from Squeeze was really good.....and then overnight, everything had that horrible 80s gated sound on the drums, and reverb on the bass drum and the snare drum, eeech.
Mark Brzezicki was the drummer.
@@markysumm72 Yes, that's the one. Thank you. Editing my post now.
Good video and reaction but the screen or projection or however you do it is super annoying!
I could barely hear this. Check your mix.
Chod this video cheated you out of a wicked cool drum intro. Look for it for your own enjoyment.
Reminds me of my High School Years! Class of 85.
