Check out this blog post which goes into heaps more detail about the job of an AC: lensnotes.com/cine/clapper-loader/
top tip with those non-permanent pens, if the writing is left on the clapper for too long and won't rub off, simply write over the text again with the same pen and then wipe off. Comes off straight away and there's no need for cleaning wipes or detergents etc. Handy to know in a pinch.
A great tool I never see mentioned, but I always carry with my 1st AC bag, is a *multimeter.*
Seriously, I use it to all kinds of stuff. Like checking the charge of small batteries, and distinguishing 12V from 24V batteries, now that cameras like the Alexa LF require different more powerful but still V-lock batteries and you don't want to mix them up. (I also work at a rental house, so I see a ton of similar looking batteries every day)
Also, some D-tap powered accessories could get damaged during a shoot from another crew, and get "repaired" by someone that doesn't know what they are doing.
So I always check for the polarity regardless of the shape of the D connector.
Ah yes. Very true. I haven't ever really seen an AC with a multimeter but we had one in rentals to check things over, especially dtap polarity! But carrying one in a kit is a great plan. Thanks for your comment!
Super helpful vid here, translates pretty well to the UK scene too. It's great to have someone demystifying the inner workings of the camera dept. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, Daniel!
Its 2021, im still rewatching and learning things from this great vid. Thank you Felicia !
As an aspiring 1st AC, I loved this video! Subscribed!
Thanks for this, this is gold, PLEASE, keep the great info coming!
I'm really loving this channel. AS someone just really starting out as an AC, the info you provide is invaluable. Thank you pal .
I
One of the most helpful videos on youtube, for begginer camera crews. Great job!
Hey Flick, could you do a video on 2nd AC’s? Their duties, what they should have in their kit, all the reports they deal with. I can’t believe how little content on 2nd AC’s is on UA-cam. Would be incredibly helpful. Love your vid’s!
Nice video, thanks!
You are awesome! I've been making my own shorts for most of my life and I'm now starting to get my foot in the industry in proper sets. I love seeing other women thriving here, thank you for your content
keep doing you!
Nearly had a heart attack when she pointed the laser at the camera. Phenomenal way to wreck a digital camera sensor. Not sure about that type of laser, but still... Super informative, thanks!
Felicia, thank you for posting this video. This stuff is overlooked by a lot of other UA-camrs and includes stuff I learned the hard way that I should have. Keep up the great work with your videos, I've been sharing them with others!
Oh thanks so much! That's really lovely of you. Yeah there is a lack of this information out there and I wish someone made these sort of videos or lists when I was starting. Learnt what I needed through trail and error too. :)
@@flickcine you're very welcome. I just try to support people so that they know their work is appreciated regardless of how many views or subscribers they get. This stuff is important for a lot of people to know!
@@flickcine also the more female voices the better! ✊🏻
As of this moment I made a very interesting discovery: coming from Andrew Lock lightning channel, luckily being pointed to your channel I recognised you are both from Australia. Working myself with Rode mics and Black Magic cams; they too come from Australia. Having check on Andrews recommandation of ThoughBuild working gear I found them very great; again Australia. I mean, Mad Max. Australia. "The Red Paintings". Australia. Jim Thriwell (originally). Australia.
I dare say that Australia is a much overlooked country when it comes to art and professional gear! Salute and huge thanks for running this channel! :D
Andrew Lock is an awesome gaff! Super knowledgeable and nice guy.
i started on Amazon looking for a slate to use on a project. Found lots of china made garbage for $20. Then I remembered this vid. Rewatched it, followed link to filmtools, now I know where to find better quality gear. Thx Felicia :)
Wow we need more content of this quality🥂👏 I’ve sent this on to a bunch of people that are planning on learning to AC
Love it, T Mark I'm going straight to a hardware shop ! Amazing
as someone who has started ACing
This is amazing
Ive been shooting for almost 3 years, but recently got scared of large productions and need a guide. So, thanks for making this series you've given me confidence to keep growing.
All the best, mate!
Nice job! Never boring. Thank You
Super nice of you to make this for aspiring assistants! Did someone mention to never ever point a laser towards a camera. Harmless as it looks, the lens is totally magnifing that. You dont want to be that person havving to explain this....
The tape set is sheer genius, you are deserved my subscription just from that itself
Super helpful video. Thanks so much for showing us all the little tips and tricks!
I'm just starting to build up my first AC bag and this video is so helpful, thank you for making it!
Oh wonderful! You're very welcome :)
Much love from South Africa...great content.
Thank you, Neo! Much appreciated :)
While I digress a tiiiiny bit in the order, the reference itself made my day ;)
Also I'm very happy to find your channel, filmmaking youtube has a tad too many guys. All the best.
Super grateful for you sharing to us. ❤️
Thank you , I needed this
wow what a cool video.....i m not into movies ie meaning real film sets....but this was such a cool video to watch...so many things to learn from film folks...awesome...everyone should watch this...at least once...at least....cheers...god bless....
Thanks for this!
Your channel is such a helpful resource. Thank you so much!
These videos are super helpful! thank you
amazing video! thanks! the T shape metal are a cool idea!
Allen wrenches, called hex wrenches, both metric and imperial, are usually on a handy hex key set, sort of like a pocket knife. They stay together and flip out the individual one when you need it.
1:35 That was strangely satisfying to hear you say “here” with an American accent.
Awesome video. Very good advice
Just discovered your channel and subscribed!! Great content, and really helpful as someone who is looking to be a camera assistant in the future. I can't find any channels that makes this kind of content so keep it up! 😊
You're awesome!!!!!!!!! Fellow camera assistant from Canada :)
Love it! Thank you! 💚💚👊🏽👊🏽
This is really helpful especially cause you’re Australian and its a good insight to the Australian industry
When I started freelance camera assisting over 40 years ago, pretty high up the list of things in my bag were the cameraman's favourite cigarettes. How things change.
super useful! Thank for sharing!!!
I'd add a set of micro-screwdrivers, some hand towels and a set of utensils for those days when you're on set late and they bring in food, but forget to get forks to eat it with, which has happened more than a few times for me.
Thank you so much for this info I'm about to start a job as AC and have a interview tomorrow for it but wanted to know what a ACs job is and what all he needs to be prepared with and this helped a lot thank you
Good luck with your interview!
@@flickcine I'm actually binge watching all you vids right now 😅
Thanks!
Thank you :)
Thankyou...I liked and subscribed 🖖♥️
thanks for sharing this video! it's very helpful !!! btw I'm majoring filmmaking in college.
I like this a lot! I think those film cores are actually 35mm (unless Felicia is a very small person) ... I guess nobody shoots film any more? I've never been an AC but this is very instructive.
They are actually 16! I was a bit silly and said the wrong thing accidentally though. I actually tape two together to make one wider core. You can use 35 as well. Glad you liked the video! 😊👍
Loved this video so incredibly helpful!!
Loved the Doctor Who reference! :D
First! Haha. Great stuff Flick! Some of the things you mentioned can definitely be handy to have in your kit if you're a DoP as well. I've got to get one of those camera covers for any of those quick changes in weather.
Absolutely! A lot of things in this kit are interchangeable!
Very good video
Really helpful!!
This is pretty useful, thanks!
Your amazing! Thank you for creating this video!
Actually a very actually interesting video with some actually useful information...actually
Actually thank you! 🙂
Yes.. thank you. I just subbed.
Hey I have a question the 35mm cores what is holding it together
You could really go on forever putting together an AC bag. A sensor cleaning kit / led loupe magnifier would essentially save the day if you were to get a speck of dust or dirt on the sensor and need to clean the sensor on location (I only would recommend this for people who really know what they are doing or have worked in a camera rental house as a technician).
Nice Video! really helped me by my first Job :)
That's so lovely to hear! Thanks, Jan!
Awesome channel. Subscribed!
Thanks, Jason!
Nice video ! We need to be like “Inspector Gadget “ on our jobs. Hahahaha =)
thnks
very good, thanks¡
Thank you for watching, Guillermo!
Thanks a lot
You're very welcome!
thank you
Maybe I totally glossed over it in the description, but could you give me that link to the cloth measuring tape you mentioned at 12:15?? Thank you, and fantastic video!
I did link it there but I just clicked it now and it brings up a 404 error. Looks like they don't sell them anymore but I used to have one from Bright Tangerine that had a leather casing. Really you're looking for a wind-up cloth tape measure that has measurements in feet and inches and is maybe around 30ft.
However I did see that they are still on B&H's website, so maybe they are still around?
www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1090724-REG/bright_tangerine_b1300_1000_brown_leather_tape_measure.html
@@flickcine Thanks for the reply! I'll be sure to check that out and do some more digging
can someone tell me what pliers would be used for and how regularly please?
Hi there, I am a SA / Support Artist in the UK, I been on sets where a crew member has what looks like a wooden block that he or she writes on. I like to know what is that use for?
your channel is really great! I found you through Hayley and Alyce's series (I know them through web series stuff haha) and am also a fellow cinematographer. i love what you're doing and your work!
Thank you! Oh cool!! Hayley and Alyce are awesome ❤
Great video. Thanks (But where was the real best Dr Who, Tom Baker!)😅
Youre god damn right i suscribed!
Thank you! This video was helpful and very funny. I hope that those tape rolls weren't rolled one at a time by hand though.... I just can't do that.
Thanks so much for watching and for your kind comment. Yes actually, those little rolls of tape are rolled by hand. Surprisingly doesn't take too long to do though :)
@@flickcine Oh man, maybe i'll have the patience to do that some day. Either way I now have a couple more good things added to my shopping list!
4:48 yeah sure they always want to be Mr. Black lol
Don't they use a laser thing instead of tape measure to find length for focus?
My question is, how long should the tape measure be? Thanks!
Why no pana ac bag?
Hello ! What's the white plastic in the tape? I love it 6:24
14:43 Dont do this ever agian! You can kill the sensor with the laser...
Hey Felicia how are you? As a fellow AC here in Portugal i have a question for you! Ive been working as an Ac and focus puller for 3 years now in national tv here in portugal, most of it tv series and soup operas, here in portugal its very hard to grow as an AC and experience better productions because its a very small market with no big productions. I would like to work as an AC in other country to see what its like, do you have any advices that may help me find different projects out of Portugal? Sorry for the long question in an older video! Keep up the good work i love your content
I'm good thank you, Gonçalo! Hope you are well. That is a difficult question to answer because it depends on where you are looking at going. I've never worked in another country before but I've found that there are good ways to find other people working in film via creative groups on Facebook. Finding groups for filmmakers wherever you are looking for work is a great step. Another way would be heading to a camera rental facility and introducing yourself. You'd be surprised how many wonderful contacts you can find there.
@@flickcine Hey thank you so much for answering! Never thought about going to some camera rental facilitys but seems like a good idea. And ill definetily search for some filmmaking groups around europe to see what i can find or if i can meet someone!
Hi Felicia,
I just subscribed to your channel :)
I’m scheduled for an interview at my local IATSE Cinematographers Guild and found your video very insightful and helpful!
Are there any tips or tricks for someone starting out fresh in the camera department?
Thanks for putting in the time for making this video. Looking forward to more episodes on your channel.
Cheers,
Ryan
Hey Ryan! Awesome to hear about the interview, that's so exciting! I think the biggest tip I could give you would be that attitude is everything. Have a "can do" attitude and always be polite and willing to learn even if the day gets stressful. Keep yourself cool, calm and collected. Guaranteed, you'll have a better time and you'll probably get called back for more work!
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment and all the best!
Felicia Smith
Hi Felicia,
I appreciate the quick response and support. It means a lot :)
As an experienced camera person, what sort of things would you like to know about a person that wanted to work with you? What questions would you ask them?
I’m trying to prepare for this interview as best as I can.
Any input helps :)
Thanks,
Ryan
@@discovery.earth.pictures Not a worry at all, you're very welcome. I guess I would want to know what experiences they have had and in what capacity (a CV of sorts), and also who they have worked with in the past. Usually my crew come from word of mouth. If someone I know has worked with them them I'll probably seek out their thoughts on the persons ability and attitude on set. If that makes sense.
Just a heads up "16mm Film Spools" 6:50 I'm pretty sure is wrong. Pretty sure it's supposed to be 35mm. Gaffer tape is usually 1 inch = 2.54 cm. In the video the Spools have extra room on the edges. I just bought 16mm and looking at them now I'm pretty sure Felicia ment to say 35mm.
@
Felicia Smith could you change the description to 35mm to save upcoming AC's from buying the wrong Film Spools.
Ah yes! Sorry you are correct!
I think I said that because I actually used 16mm ones on mine and used two together to make a larger roll. My bad. Will adjust the description. Thanks for pointing that out, totally missed that!
David Tennant is most certainly the best Doctor...
Please add laser mesurment buying link
Tape more tape more more tape 😅😅😅
Do you know where I can find that bag?
It's just a large tool bag which is the best part because you have heaps of design options and you can find them at your local hardware store! 😊
What kind of bag is that? Or where can I find one similar? Great vid btw! :)
Thanks so much! It is just a simple tool bag from a hardware store :)
When I was assisting I had two sizes. One large (kind of like the one in this video) and one a little smaller for smaller jobs where I didn't need everything.
Felicia Smith Thanks for the reply, I thought so but then I found the CineBags, but so expensive! So the hardware store it is 😜
@@mikeesparza LOVE Cinebags but that's something to save up for. There are definitely other options out there :)
You sold all your gear? You moving to Cam Op or DP, or changing careers?
Moved to DP. Been shooting for a while now! :)
Thank u for the great information.
6:13 what do u call those empty tape holders? I don’t know what to search after at Amazon 😬
That bag look more like a hardware toolbag.

NOT REALLY THE BEST DOCTOR?
Please don’t try to put in alot of humour, because it is really not funny and I personally think You are trying to increase the length of the video, please keep this suggestion in mind
