Hi everyone, I hope you enjoy this video offering a robust critique of Stephen Wolfe's Case for Christian Nationalism. If you like this stuff, then you'll probably like my books and . Otherwise, check out other videos in my playlist "Meddlesome Priest."
Your initial introduction is a grave mischaracterization. No where in the book does he talk about anything like what you mention. Especially in your "white" characterization. There will be a god enforced by government... do you want it to be pagan or Christian?
Dr. Bird, Thanks for doing the hard work reviewing Wolfe's book. The 3-part review and this video are helpful resources for those working to engage American Christian Nationalists in our families, churches, and communities.
Given our current state of affairs, I’m a bit surprised that this kind of nationalist thinking is still floating around. I’m not sure their quivers are full enough to ever make their city on a hill desires a black robed rebellion reality.
Christ is King.... that has consequences. The persecution of the early church was brought about PRECISELY because of the political implications of Christ as King ans ultimate authority.
I am loyal to my nation although it's becoming increasingly difficult each day. But, I pledge my allegiance to the Kingdom of God alone. Both nationalism and globalism are manipulated and controlled by dark spirits.
I tried to get through this book and I just couldn’t finish it. For all the reasons you mentioned it just seems so unbiblical, and anti-gospel and frankly ethnocentrist. I kept thinking to myself “Is this what Jesus died for? This was his dying vision?” No way. Can’t wait to read Jesus and the Powers.
Idk what book you all read or what kool-aid you’ve been drinking or what Jesus you say you worship, but I just finished “The Case for Christian Nationalism” and Dr. Bird’s representation of the book seems fair and I agree with his assessment. Y’all have lost your minds or are too comfortable.
I have two adopted Korean daughters. I do want them to have a healthy view of their ethnic heritage. I find Wolfe's views offensive. What alternate world does he live in?
A bit over the top perhaps, but wonderfully articulated. I have a much better understanding (from your perspective) of so-called “Christian Nationalism” than before…
Thank you for your critique. And yeah wow that's kind of what I've been thinking and it's opioids for the mind knowing someone else is in agreement with me haha. Keep up the good work.
If I have to choose between 'Control of good people ,of people one has faith upon' & 'free for all society where animals and humans are allowed to survive together' I will opt for the former. This is the same reason why I believe China will go ahead and for good reasons, this is the reason why I strongly feel British Rule at least in our part of the world was good for us, it is also the same reason why I feel there should be racial segregation around the world at a broad level, not at the minute and myopic level to which the Nazis went but at a broad level, not an oppression or control of one group over the other but a separation that is maintained with allowance for individuals across the boundaries who are attracted to each other for some reason or other, I think it is needed for US will be needed for Europe unless things are checked, will be needed by other parts of the world too for their own benefits
Why do you guys want monarchy or dictatorship lol. Like every major massacre and genocide is done via those forms of government. Ussr, nazism, roman empire the list goes on. You can't name a single modern democracy thats done anything as bad as the worse monarchies/dictatorships. I agree that a great king is far better than a great democracy. But a bad democracy is no where near as bad as a bad monarchy. The person who should be King is Christ.
These people act as if democracy was revealed to Moses on Mount Sinai... The American Republic was made for a moral and distinctly Christian people, it is entirely unfit for any other.
@@theoe354 They want us to keep marching down the road that has taken us to where we are today in support of liberal democracy which is more than happy to crush our brethren, and our children. And they are going to scold us about the dangers of coercion whilst ignoring how much coercion is wielded against us.
Dr. Bird I want to say thank you for the book Christianity In Its World. I'm almost done with it and it has been very helpful. The most important revelation I had was how similar the conservative evangelical church is to the ways the Pharisees were (with some Zealot mixed in). I came to the conclusion that I frequently think of the Pharisees in overly simplistic terms and risk falling into the same trap. Anyway, thanks again for your work and ministry.
Bird has misread Wolfe's book in obvious but important ways. First, it's a book about Protestant "political" theory, it's not about evangelism. Secondly, it's applied to an American context. Thirdly, it's about theory "in principle" -- which Bird seems to miss at every turn.. Fourthly, he's addressing history before the United States existed and how the U.S. actually operated for a couple hundred years prior to the Post WWII Consensus. Wolfe doesn't advocate for any such thing as a White ethno-State. Bird should stick to pecking Bird seed. He's a Christian who doesn’t want to live in a Christian nation with Christian rulers. Apparently Christ is King in his heart but no where outside of it.

Thank you for this very nice critique of this very unfortunate idea. Had an unpleasant encounter with fans of his book on YT and boy did that leave a sour taste in my mouth. People were twisting the Bible and denying sound scholarship to support their ideas.
Good review and I largely agree. I'm skeptical about what you see as the inoculating effects of cultural Christianity. What does that mean for families? We try to instill a Christian culture in our house including attending to the ministry of word and sacrament and morning and evening prayer. Does that really make it less likely our kids will be Christian? Or what am I missing about what you mean by cultural Christianity?
It means your kids will grow up in a culture that doesn't glorify violence, sexual promiscuity, śódómy, and disorder. Like the whole world before 1960.
I tried to crawl over the massive heap of straw-men piled up on the road - couldn't be done. You obviously are happy to criticize things you don't know about. Shameful for anyone with "Dr." as his title.
@@timbushong4387 Much appreciated, Tim. Seems we're seeing two "extremes" going on between these folks (the more "liberal" side, for lack of a better term), and so-called "Christian Nationalists" (of the kind Stephen Wolfe presents). Many Christians are becoming imbalanced on these issues. I lament.
Great video. After Baptist seminary I landed in a no man’s land until I found work in government for the last 24 years. As a huge fan of the Bill of Rights, a former army reservist and civil servant, I think Mike Bird should write a curriculum on Civics-for-Christians teaching Roger Williams, the Constitution, the art of mission-by-persuasion (not coercion), the Golden Rule, the Great Commission, and any other topics that could correct, rebuke, exhort and inform the laity about the value of separation of powers, Christ and Culture, the two greatest commandments, Abraham Kuyper’s worldview, and Christian democracy. We need old baby boomers to grow up, give up their bottles, stop infantilizing over politics and taxes, and re-learn the basics of civic engagement.
How could we get this Christian worldview into our churches or Sunday School curriculum's? (I can hear the consternation now, particularly from the extremes... "Why are we talking about politics! You should stick to the Bible and the Gospel!)

I see too many "Christians" trying to synthesise nietzsche and Christianity. But it simply won't work. There's a reason nietzsche despised it.
