Lived in the same condo comlpex with these guys when were all at MUN. I loved their music. They played in the lounge down in the mall. Hope to see "Drinking Songs of NFLD" on a CD someday!

The group is Ryan's Fancy -- singer is Dennis Ryan -- Irish/Canadian folk group, very big in the 70s

It could be argued that they left an indelible impression on the Newfoundlanders who heard their music. If a fulsome study of the cultural impact of immigrants could be undertaken, I believe it would be concluded that Ryan’s Fancy’s impact upon Newfoundland culture, both immediate and lasting, is unprecedented in terms of potency, given that there were only three of them, and of longevity, given that the renaissance of traditional Newfoundland music which they began has persisted to this day. It might be understood that Fergus is actively keeping this legacy alive, but I don’t believe he’d have done it on his own had the impact of the trio not been so significant.

I know this song in an American version sung I think by Kate Smith. It has Nashville and railroad in place of Dartmoor and railway. Tune is a bit different too in places.
This version does not seem to blame her - the version I know says "I've counted on you, love to get me a break, I'll never forget, love, I'm here for your sake. We both know who's guilty, we both know it well. I'll rot in this jailhouse before I will tell."

I too knew this song in American version. I'm 82 years old and my mother had this record by a male singer, I guess we call it country these days. The words were as you said in our version. My sister and I loved that song as kids and I have searched for that version for years but can only come up with this Irish version

Just type Ryans Fancy into google and you will get all the info about the singer and the group, they were Irish immigrants into Canada. Just love this song, just lucky it wasn't me doing the counting. I think this is a slightly better version than Dermot's.

Here is my opinion ‘ and I’m entitled to it. His voice is too harsh and shouty’ for my liking. The key of the song’ is way too high. He is more suited to a pub.

Ah look. We won’t murder each other ‘ over it. It is just an opinion. Fair play to you though. When you say I don’t know what I’m talking about’ once again it just comes down to a different of opinion. May we always have them.
