Sal, don’t skip over INXS’s early catalog! Their first big US song, The One Thing, is another steamy, phenomenal song. More early greatness - Original Sin, Burn For You, Don’t Change. They were INCREDIBLE live - magnetic, fun, tight. Another great Aussie band to check is Midnight Oil.
The world lost a gem when Michael died. He was the WHOLE package. He was talent, creativity, charisma, and sex personified. When you hear INXS, you know it's INXS.
Favorite INXS songs…By My Side, Elegantly Wasted, Suicide Blonde (live at Wembley is the best!), To Look at You, Not Enough Time, Disappear, Original Sin and so much more!
Great reaction! I think you nailed it. These guys somehow mashed a lot of different styles. I'd recommend 2 things for your INXS journey: The video version of "Need You Tonight/Mediate" (together) and the Wembley performance of "Suicide Blonde." (1991, 72,000 people)
God they were huge. Got to see them at Red Rocks. It was pouring rain. The opening song Hutch came running out, slipped and slid on his butt across the stage, popped up and grabbed the mike just in time to perfectly hit the first word of the song. Hard to pick a fave but "What You Need" is def one of mine.
You need to react to their live performances. Michael Hutchence was the closest thing to Jim Morrison since Jim Morrison. He oozed sensuality and he knew it. I saw Inxs at a small 2000 seat theater in Nashville and the balcony actually moved.
They have so many hits and Michael H's voice is so sultry. I second all the comments that suggest the next one to be one of their live performances. The band was fire on stage from all the recordings I have seen (unfortunately I never saw them live myself). I recall 'Mystify' has live footage in the official video but I think the sound is just studio recording. I'd still recommend 'Need You Tonight' because it's their biggest (one of their biggest) hit and it's so funky. You'll like that.
I knew you would come back to them right away! Everyone feels good after listening to INXS. The whole alternative rock/ new wave genre started with early INXS music, pre KICK. They incorporated a lot of sounds from their area of the world aboriginal, Asian and pre disco beats. It was something new and not heard before. I was addicted with Shabooh Shoobah and remains my favorite (depending on the day). INXS does not have a “bad” or skippable song. A favorite song, no way! It depends on what do you want to hear! They can do it all. Since you started with KICK, maybe do that and go back. They also have extensive live performances and the pinnacle is the 1991 Wembley Stadium concert LIVE BABY LIVE, and again there are no “bad” songs. It will be the most flawless concert you have ever seen and that is not hype! Also, Michael is the most magnetic charismatic person you will ever see on stage. You literally can not take your eyes off him. Later after you have discovered all the music there are several documentaries on Michael, but the best one is from his friend Richard Lowenstein (he did many of the band videos) Mystify: Michael Hutchence. I can rave and rave but I picked out something (I think) is a good mix of the new wave, early punk & funk with the Ozzie influences from Shabooh Shoobah, called Black & White ua-cam.com/video/O7kFKp-2DiI/v-deo.html I listened to this late at night on a radio simulcast back in the day and did not see the original until almost 20 years later. The Swing from The Swing is also a good representation but that is the next album.
Inxs was a breath of fresh air in a decade that exploded with evolutionary music... you never knew what was coming next it seemed every 6 month there was some crazy big new band surly by 87 we had seen it all, then in 1988 along comes inxs that just had a completely new sound... the artistry in music never stopped in the 80s.
INXS was one of the BEST! Dance floors pounded every time they rocked a room accompanied by Michael’s breathy voice-suuuch good times ! Need you Tonight/a MUST ❤
OOOOO I'm starting this comment before even starting the video, because I'm SOOOOO excited. THIS is my favorite INXS song of all time...... And I just know I'm going to love your reaction. (UPDATED : Awesome reaction! I knew you would love this one. Your giggle about mid way through it, was so cute. LOL. Thank you for doing this one)
No, not a fair comparison. Boy bands didn't play their own instruments. They were singers and teen idols. Inxs were a rock & roll band that emerged in the new wave, early 80's, and they took off really big with the Kick album. They've explored all sorts of musical genres. The Kiss the Dirt album is my favorite, and my favorite song is Kiss the Dirt (Falling Down the Mountain), but all of their stuff is really great. Don't Change and Original Sin were their early hits on the new wave scene. Need You Tonight was their smash breakthrough. But really, you can be listening to Inxs for a long time.
I love your reactions. Michael Hutchence was one of the most underrated frontman of all time. You must hear NEVER TEAR US APART it's a masterpiece! They were so awesome. There's a full documentary about his life on UA-cam and they had a show about 20 years ago called Rock Star, where the band auditioned for a new singer, but that didn't work out so well.
Need to hit them up Live(video) -"What you need" from Live Baby Live. It will show you everything you need to know about this band. Also can stress enough their collaboration with Jimmy Barnes called 'Good Times"
Any song from their Wembley Stadium show. It's famous and incredible. Also, their official videos are always worth watching rather than just audio. This was peak MTV period and a number of their videos were directed by film directors.
LIVE BABY LIVE..Wembley Stadium live concert is a MUST to check out! I was lucky enough to be in the UK at the time(a 25yo from Australia) & it remains as the best concert I've been to. The vibe was amazing😯...all the bands were great & the headliners INXS totally killed it! 👍 Michael Hutchence truly one of the greatest frontmen..in the vein of Jim Morrison & Robert Plant👍😎 Go check it for sure! ✌️
OK so I bought this album (vinyl) back in 87. Then in the early 2000's I was on a Contiki tour in Australia and did a sky dive from 14000 feet and opted for them to film it. And this is the song they chose to accompany me falling from that height - epic !!
So many favorite INXS songs! Love that people are discovering and appreciating their music almost 40 years later-loved them in the 80's. And Michael Hutchence-what a voice and a gem . Some favorites: earlier inxs: 'Kiss the Dirt (Falling Down the Mountain') , 'Original Sin', are a few and the last album "Elegantly Wasted' with Michael has some beautiful songs 'Searching' and 'Just a Man' is my fave. The sound has really changed on that one from the early stuff and it's fascinating. Everything in between is good too but those are just a few I'd recommend. And can I say it one more time- Michael Hutchence
Awesome band. Check out the crowd at their Wembley gig! Michael Hutchence was one of the best singers and frontmen of all time. Sad he left us so young. Makes me think of Karen Carpenter. So talented. This song makes me think of how each and every one of us has the potential for good and evil in us. Question is, how do we handle it?
Michael and Andrew Farris were childhood friends, along with Andrews bros Tim (lead guitar) and jon (drums0. Gary Beers is the bass player. Andrew used to be the singer unntil one day he handed the mic to Michael.
I got to see INXS when they were an opening band in Portland Oregon in 1983. They played for 90 minutes and brought down the house. I did not know the words to the songs, but the band had that beat that everything did not matter. In 1997 they lost Michael (lead singer) and I cried all day - I could not believe it. They have tried a couple of times with new lead singers, but because they all met in high school you cant get that groove back. It took me a couple of years before I could listen to a song without crying. Original Sin, Mystify, Beautiful Girl and Never Tear Us Apart are some of my most favorites. You cant go wrong.
Literally I went years before I could even listen to their music after Michael died. I was a freshman in college when it happened and it shook me. I was in their fan club and they disbanded the fan club and sent us all out all sorts of swag that they had on hand - old unused backstage passes, demo cassettes- the stuff was cool. I went and saw them a few times with JD Fortune and met the guys a couple times in their last years as a band. They were really the nicest people.
I like you said sensual. Michael oozed sex and sensuality. 🔥 He had it. And losing him, I felt to the depths of my soul. 😢 Coming out of the 70s rock era to newer rock was difficult for some, my bf for 1 hated anything different. I just love music, so I really ❤ it all and especially LOVED INXS!! ❤❤ Missing Michael...💔
You'd probably enjoy their Live Baby Live performance (on UA-cam) for 75,000+ fans live at Wembley Stadium from 1991‼"Never Tear Us Apart" is a beautiful song‼☮ ❤ 🎶 RIP Michael Hutchence. ❤ 🕊 🙏 1-22-60 to 11-22-97 (I miss you still‼)
Aw, dude, the video! As great as their songs are, their videos are always excellent and add a lot to the experience of their songs. The video for this one so fits the song.
Kick is iconic, that's why it was released so many times. maybe do an album review? Also, don't forget to check them out live and I second their older material too!
INXS was one of the biggest bands in The States in the late 80s. Michael Hutchence was also a major sex symbol rivalling George Michael at the time. One of the reasons I love this band is because they have such a unique style that one can duplicate. They also don't often repeat themselves like Def Leppard for example. Listen Like Thieves, Kick, X, Welcome to Wherever You Are, Full Moon Dirty Hearts and Shabooh Shoobah as such different albums and I love them all. I just wish this band would receive the respect they so richly deserve because the late 80s would've totally sucked w/out them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Live - Wembley Stadium to see Michael at his brilliant charismatic best. They are a very tight professional band, if you like this you will love all their work. Such a loss to the world when Michael died, the band was never the same. They did have an American tv reality show to try to replace him at one stage called Rock Star hosted by Dave Navarro. Even if they could’ve replaced him as a frontman/singer (good luck) they couldn’t replace his song writing talents. ❤
I would recommend considering What You Need, Need You Tonight, Mystify, and Never Tear Us Apart as the next set (It’s what you need). I’d also check out By My Side (live), Beautiful Girl, Disappear, and Suicide Blonde if you want a second set. Their cover of Good Times with Jimmy Barnes on the Lost Boys Soundtrack is super energetic and fun (and will make you want to get on your feet and move). When you get around to it, One Thing, Original Sin, and Listen Like Thieves will help you appreciate how they got to where they are on Kick. They have a number of others that are worth listening to, but these are the one you’d be expected to know in a conversation with folks who listened to them contemporaneously.
Great reaction, glad you did the Spotify, sounds so much better without the distraction of the video, as with most INXS, is even better live! To get the full INXS experience i would suggest What You Need lor New Sensation live from Wembley stadium in 1991!
Hey mate. Love to see your reaction to one of our Aussie legends, John Farnham singing Help (LIVE with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra) Also singing Your the voice from the same venue.
SalvoG - This WHOLE album is filled with bangers..... This album was HUGE in the day... every single party that you went to had this album on at some stage. Thos album was their Sgt Pepper, their Dark Side... It broke them worldwide. Other tracks to listen to... Gosh, so many, I agree with lots of other comments about their live show from Wembley... (Britains biggest venue at the time, actually a football stadium). It is a killer.... SUICIDE BLONDE is fabulous but so is another suggestion I saw.... Need You Tonight?Meditate - definitely do them together... Hope to see soemthing else form them soon.... Keep on Rocking man.
This is a great album, with many good tracks. Michael was such a great singer, and it was so sad when he passed away,a great loss to music. I always wondered if Suicide Blonde was about his partner.....
My favorite song is Elegantly Wasted. It's really funky. Also funky is Need You Tonight/Mediate. For a more New Wave sound try The One Thing. For an incredible soulful power ballad try Never Tear Us Apart. For a more rock/blues oriented song try Suicide Blonde or Don't Change. For a more New Sensation type song try What You Need, Original Sin or Listen Like Thieves. But honestly, Elegantly Wasted is incredible!!!
KICK had a lot of singles. You should check those first. You missed #1 in Canada. At 1/10 of USA market, Canada was huge for INXS. Was at a private INXS show in 1998 in Toronto. They are phenomenal live.
@@JohnnyMegabyteCanada hmmmm….I can see that, but to me he has a smoother timbre to his voice……hence the Morrison feeling to me. Morrison ha d a smooth delivery. Michael Hutchence lacks the dark menace in his tone..but ……I just feel something in common between the two to my ears.
The whole "KICK " album is a BANGER!! Need you tonight and Mediate running together is BADASS!! You gotta react to those to songs!! Thank you so much for posting. 🤘🎶🎵🎧❤🥁🎹🎻
INXS puts their hands in a lot of different genres. Your followers have mention some really great ones. like" the one thing."had a whole list of hits. Kept putting them out until Michael's demise RIP. Another Day the music died. Thx Salvo.
New Wave - Just Keep Walking, Stay Young. Power Pop - The One Thing, Don't Change. Funk - What You Need, Listen Like Thieves. Funk Rock- Need You Tonight-Mediate, Kick. Alternative Rock - Suicide Blonde, Disappear. Alternative Pop Rock - Not Enough Time, Heaven Sent, Elegantly Wasted.
owned this!! it was a cassette,,, yes it was really a cassette and there was Zero bad songs on it! great driving music if you enjoy the challenge of avoiding speeding violations!! lol love this tune. thanks so much!
You have to do more of their early stuff. The One Thing, Don't Change (my favorite) , Original Sin, Listen Like Thieves, I Send a Message, Mediate, Mystify, Kick and later stuff also good, Bitter Tear, By My Side (they played this at Michaels funeral), Suicide Blonde, Beautiful Girl, Disappear. The Swing and Kick and X are my favorite.

Don’t forget The Hoodoo Gurus, too. Mars Needs Guitars was a kickin’ album.
The world lost a gem when Michael died. He was the WHOLE package. He was talent, creativity, charisma, and sex personified.

Never Tear Us Apart is a great song.
Michael had such a Jim Morrison energy. He had that unique voice, that charisma, that sexiness

Michael was a true rockstar, INXS fused a lot of genres in their sound, and Michael had everyone on their feet. Great choice, keep it up!!
Sal, you REALLY need to watch a song from live at Wembley. The energy is fantastic! I don’t think you’ve watched a live clip of them yet.
Suicide Blonde from Wembley!!

This was by far their most commercially successful album, but my favorite was Welcome to Wherever You Are because they really experimented on it.

Never tear us Apart was by far one of my favs

His voice was amazing
"What You Need" is my favorite, followed closely by "Never Tear Us Apart", "Need You Tonight", and "Mystify".
So Lucky I got to see INXS Live back in the day at the Hollywood Palladium
"Don't Change" is a good one. "One Thing" was their break out song, also good.
INXS was one of the biggest bands in The States in the late 80s. Michael Hutchence was also a major sex symbol rivalling George Michael at the time. Suicide Blonde
This whole album is truly superb.
Every song on kick is excellent.
“I Want You Tonight” will always be one of my all time favorites ?
You could react to every song on the album; it’s that good. The entire album is a sonic road-trip. Lots of different styles.
