the magic '42' formula. It only works for 50 Hz and regular non grain oriented silicon steel. The real formula for 1 turn RMS voltage value is: V (in volts) = B (core saturation value in TESLA) x 2 x PI x FREQUENCY / 1.41 (square root of 2) . This type of core is usually made of grain oriented silicon steel, which has a saturation value about 1.5 tesla. The formula for 1 tesla gives a value of 2.31 turns per volt, just like the magic 42 formula, while at 1.5 tesla the value is 1.65 turns per volt. If you do not know the type of core, just make a 100 turn coli and test at what voltage it starts to saturate. The power only depends on the size of the wire you can pass into the core center at the needed turns. You have to calculate the hole area and use half for the primary and half for the secondary. Then you calculate the winding resistance and you have to decide how much power due to wire resistance are you willing to lose at full load. That value is somewhere between 3% for a 'cold' transformer to 10% for a 'hot' transformer.
Combining wires wont make you need less of them, you can just draw more amps without it melting. When you think about it it also makes sense, you just parallel connect all the wires in the end.
