As a calligrapher of 35 years I use Speedball C-Series nibs almost exclusively, and get excellent results. I've tried others but always come back to Speedball!
What style of Calligraphy do you write in? Or all of them? I found the Calligraphy Masters channel and many others. I took a class in school when I was younger and remember it being lot of fun. Slow going but really fun
The nibs have to be taken care of daily after you complete your work. You have to clean them with either Warm water (it will be fantastic) or just normal water. Because they tend to get rust. Love this video 😉😁
Nice vid -- FYI, you’re taking the pen out of the ink upside-down. You should keep the brass part on top (just like when you’re writing) and drag the underside of the nib against the edge of the ink bottle -- that removes any extra ink that can drip onto the page.
I have a few nib pens, although I don't do calligraphy I find them fun to use. some people collect these nibs and holders and they can be very unique. thanks for your review Teoh.
Make sure you hold your pen at an angle! You seem to be holding it so the width of the pen is parallel to the top of the page, it should be tilted so the flat bit is facing the top left corner of your page, or even more left, or else you will struggle with line variation of wide pens, as you do in this vid.
I just bought a similar set on clearance and it came with a nice little storage case but not the little guide so this video was very useful on where to get started
From what I see, the "empire" nib is actually the best one for you to start with for english style lettering ; even if you don't like it at the first try ! You have to train a lot to master the thickness of the line but it's normal : it's not easy at all !
Do not buy dip pens unless you get the right paper for it. When I started I almost gave up this amazing art form because I didn’t know it only works with the right kind of paper. Thank goodness I stuck to it because it really is a beautiful art form that brings much peace and joy.
Great review. ^_^ The Leonardt 256 nib I found is very flexible and easy to control. I haven't experimented much with dip pens. I've got to get a Tachikawa nib holder. The one included in my set was lousy. Then I can try them more.
Hello my friend! Correct me if I am wrong. I can see a slight angle on the tip of the C-series pen, tilted towards the left when seen from the top (where you see the gold plated surface). Is this correct?
Thanks Teoh. Another great review. For quite a while I have seen these pens where I buy my sketchbooks, and at the other place where I buy my watercolors. and I pass them up because I've been too intimidated. but your video will get me to try. Be brave, right?
Don't think too much about how good or bad your art will look. Just enjoy the learning process and the experience of making art. The more you draw, the better you will get.
Teoh, could you please do a video review of Desiderata pens or other similar brands? They specialize in making fountain pens that use Zebra G nibs. I'm interested in getting one for myself but I've heard mixed reviews from people. Would it just be better for me to get a Jinhao and fit it with a G nib?
+Nicolle I have a friend who reviewed that at www.parkablogs.com/content/review-desiderata-fountain-pen-g-nib-matte-black-delrin-101-z If you make your own pen, the ink flow may not be good.
mine do that as well, but I found out if you wash it with water and made sure to get all the ink off and dry it with paper towels then slightly rub it with alcohol pad, the nib will last much longer before rusting
Hi Teoh Yi Chie....... great review.......I find all of them very useful. Thank you. Can you please tell me if the Speedball 102 nib holder can hold the Zebra maru nibs properly ?????
HEY GUYSSS HELPPP!! So I’m a total noob at dip pens but I want to try it out for a change. The problem is that I can’t understand how to use the pen with running out of ink in 2 seconds. I don’t know why the pen isn’t holding ink... please help ;-; thank you for reading
Not sure if it helps but this video from the UA-camr shows you how to prep the nib before use if the nib does not get as much ink ua-cam.com/video/utUPCYXPc9o/v-deo.html
I am leftie and I write Copperplate and Gothic Textura. It's a bit more difficult because you have to reinvent some movements but it's not an obstacle if you like it. For the Gothic, I hold the nib holder at 45º above the writing line ; in the opposite way a rightie usually do.
@@teohyc yepp but i am from india only limited speedball products are available here so i wanted a professional like you to tell your experience with the product i am thinking to get speedball c style set with zig manga black 60 ink please tell me if theres a better option than this one?
cause I haven't really tried them... ;-; There have been a lot of pens sold in our local bookstores. which nib should I get started with when I get one?
If you just want to learn the feel of nib pens, the cheapest should do just fine. Try looking for a small set so you can sample what works best for you and what works with your art style. I personally like crow quill nibs since I like working with small details. The G nib is also a good all-around pen that a lot of artists use.
I use these for illustration, because unlike you I'm afraid to use but want too use a fountain pen with waterproof ink. I don't want the ink to dry out in my fountain pen, I know you use waterproof ink in your pens without a problem. idk.
The thing is that waterproof ink (calligraphy ink) is pigment based so it'll get clogged in the fountain pen. Fountain pens usually use dye based ink but it's not. You can however, buy waterproof ink specially made for fountain pens.
Miguel Angel just don't use any calligraphy/India inks and you won't have to worry about clogging your pen. De Atramentis document inks are good, as well as Noodler's bulletproof inks. Some pigment inks are specially designed for fountain pens (like Platinum Carbon Black) but they require some more effort in cleaning and maintainence.

You videos are VERY informative. I truly appreciate you taking the time to share your wisdom. Please stay safe during this time, my friend!

I love your work Priyansh!
Try denatured alcohol. Works better.
I think these kind of nibs do work better on smoother paper, maybe try a hot press watercolor or Tomae River..thanks for the review...
+Eileen Goldenberg Yes, it does work better on smoother paper.

I was literally looking for this answer! Thank you!.
Thanks for this. I was actually looking for a review of this exact set about a weeks ago but couldn't find any. Good timing.

Maddie Moskala : it's a kind of alchemy between the ink, the nib and the paper. for training , Rhodia paper 80g works fine with quite anything.
Maddie Moskala speedball art has all of ur art needs I work there great place to work and we have a large variety of pins and paper and ink
I've used dip pens on printer paper and notebook paper. Not ideal but I was able to practice

Interesting! Thanks for posting!
you should have used smoother paper if its scratchy then like marker paper

ever use a brause blue pumpkin nib? it's one of my favs. very flexible. huge line variation :)
+boscorner I've not tried that before.
Leonardt nº40 "Steno" is one of my favourites. I think it's the same nib from two differents brands.

Hi ,thats so wonderful, looking this one for so long lime, where did you bought this one Sir?
You can find them on Ebay for very cheap prices or Amazon for more $$ same brand

Hi Teoh, what's your favorite brand for watercolor beside arches? I'm looking for new paper and would like to know what you recommend.

Teoh Yi Chie thank you. I will give Fabrizio a try

Dip pens are fun! Although being a leftie I can't write with them, only draw. XD
MyArtJourney if u try harder u can, I know coz I'm bidextrous, I can use both hands
You could write Hebrew! Right to left

about the nibs on 7:52, how do you clean them?
If the ink is stuck, you can soak the nib in fountain pen cleaning liquid. There Rotring and Dr Ph Martin sells them
Can i get the c style set for Gothic please reply i want to get a dip pen for Gothic.
Speedball makes many different types of nib. I'm sure you can find what you want.

Use Sailor Kiwaguro or Platinum Carbon Black.
