I'm 5 min in and I thumbs up. I take long breaks from the game and I REALLY appreciate that you go over each ability and demonstrate what it's supposed to do. So many people just gloss over all the details.

You forgot the most important aspect of the guardian spear: It looks incredible with the new Falling star spear haha, and having a weapon that fell from the sky is 100% the best lore. Great guide ;) wish we had a more concise build but most places still look exploratory
In open world I am currently using a Zeal/Radiance/Honor Core Hammer Guardian, because of the nice dps, great cleave and because I can go brain afk after work.. Adding the spear as a secondary weapon really filled out the kit quite nicely. Even with pure Berserker gear the healing you put out is really good. The condi cleanse, and heal, helps with stuff like Eparch meta or many of the champions in the new maps. Also 2-5-3-4 is a good AoE dps burst that the spec normally lacks. They could tweak some numbers, but overall I like the spear.
If you want to rock a spear on a FB with a dps/support build, try Rad/Virt/FB in ritualist gear with an axe/torch in your main set. With Unrelenting Criticism, you can camp in axe for damage, and go into spear when you need some support or sustain. You don't want to stay in it too long, or you'll lose dps, but it can be handy for popping 5, 4, 3, F1. It also has some mobility, which FB otherwise lacks. Use Weighty Terms, Mantra of Potence, and Mantra of Flame for all the pages you'll want. If you want to use the spear for damage with all the support goodies it brings along, a DH build is absolutely the way to go. You'll just have less support/sustain than a FB. I like both and switch it up depending on my mood, but I mostly play FB.
As a guardian main too, great video. My main is Condi Quickness Firebrand, but that didn't work well with Spear. How are you survinging with Dragonhunter? It had too little survival for the dangers of Janthir. Also, didn't like Longbow for ranged damage. Now I'm going with Cele Condi Alac Willbender. The utilities and virtues do the damage, while spear is for support and Alacrity helps with the long cooldowns. It's been decent, since I'm not dying (much) and still have 10k DPS, which is enough for open world
I was running dragonhunter with spear and longbow for most of the JW story and meta myself. Felt very on-theme as a semi-retired dragonhunter exploring the wilds with hunting weapons until the plot suddenly hit, and those skills and weapons were repurposed to hunting titans (eating magic, creating minions from the landscape, they're practically alien dragons in another form, right?). Regarding surviving, my comments would be: 1) Consider swapping berserker gear for marauder if reasonably practical. It might not be, but if you have any legendary gear, for open world on a profession with low base health, marauder is a big boost to survivability with a fairly low cost in damage. 2) Don't go full DPS with skills and traits. It's worth bringing some defence in your utility slots, such as Stand Your Ground or Advance. Virtues, taking Indomitable Courage, gives you a stunbreak which also doubles as some good blocking and stability. When not looking to maximise damage against a single target, it might also be worth considering taking defensive traits in Dragonhunter as well, although I don't think I thought to make any changes from the raid trait choices there (which meant I probably wasn't playing optimally because I wasn't throwing Spear of Justice as often as I probably should have been with my DH traits). 3) Don't underestimate Wings of Resolve. It's basically a second heal skill on a reasonably short cooldown that also cleanses conditions and can get you out of bad quickly if needed. 4) If you're running longbow (or any ranged weapon, sceptre/focus is still functional if you don't like longbow, heck, even staff can work okay with DPS stats although it wouldn't be the top recommendation), don't be afraid to back off if staying in melee is getting too hot (or, possibly more precisely, too covered in condition fields from rotting titan goop). Dragonhunter is the guardian elite specialisation that loses the least from staying at range in a pinch, especially if you haven't invested too heavily into traps.
Dude, great rundown. I've been dusting off my old guardian lately, and trying out Firebrand, and it definitely felt a bit like a square peg in a round hole. I think I'll see about getting him some HP and fill out DH to give that a go. It really does feel like the Guardian spear is kinda tailor made for that hybrid support that plays really well in the Janthir open world though, which is cool.
@@KROOF That's actually a really good point; core guardian is still really strong and not flavouring it so heavily with one of the elites may actually let the spear be the star for a bit.
i play guardian, ngl .. i may have just kept my previous build, equipped spear and used all skills on cooldown. Definitely agreed this is a perfect varient to use on DH. This video was useful!
I’ve been having a blast with my DH + spear, it adds tons of sustain and group support for open world. You lose range from the longbow, but it’s a great kit
I am using ReShade, so it may look sharper. Though they have been upgrading their back end graphics and rendering, so some of the new maps look much nicer. Oh and also the newer armor and weapons.
I'm currently; well for a long time running Dragon Willbender, and the Spear is fantastic, most of the time. I'm a bit sad that the first skill is not ranged. Guardian has bad ranged weapons ( Staff is meh, Longbow is slow, and Scepter is bigger meh ) so i wanted them to increase the range for atleast 900. Other than that, i'm quite enjoying the Spear :)
I was testing out builds from metabattle, but nothing really fit. I ended up going WB Spear/Staff with a focus on symbol synergy and I actually like it. Zeal/Honor marauders/zerk
I gotta say, I was not a big fan of how this felt. The spear on guardian feels weak and missing that kick. I’m currently playing with Dragon Hunter on berserkers gear and it just doesn’t have the same hard hitting feel of the great sword. The damage to me also feels on the lower end.
little sad that its mostly a power weapon since I primarily play condi dps firebrand and I dont have gear for the power set so I would need to regear for it to be effective
@@KROOF ok cool, i just have cele at the moment, will have to see what i can buy, do you have a link to your build, where it shows what gear piece you have in the slots
Can confirm as a willbender main that spear is really fun. It helps immensely as a backup option for if im getting my ass handed to me with my sword, where i put out a bit less damage but I'm also generally TAKING less damage as well, if not just healing it away.

I wish the illuminated buff had more visual feedback to it. Like maybe it gives your skill bar a soft glow to it or something.

I have been using Spear Willbender for my playthrough
How is it? I've been thinking of using a free slot on a willbender
@@WangThorpeener it's very mobile and can push out some good damage. I've been pairing it with hammer as well
Ohhh we doing guides - can’t wait for necro

^^^ everything @Draxynnic said and more! Definitely adjusting the vitality stat and looking for some more sustain utilities will help out a bunch!
Spear DH is really fun! took me some time to adapt to the weapon skills but is awesome as dps.

thanks for the video. spear on guardian seemed a bit wishywashy to me. so thanks for clarifying what it actually does.
Happy to help! 🎉❤

They improve the graphics and textures on this expansion or do you use any reshader?the armor texture looks amazing

I agree, apart from (1) the others all link in with each other - everything makes sense.
LOVE your character, 100%
Why thank youuu! 🫣👏👏
Seeing your guardian with aegis and spear makes me kinda jealous, I've always thought Spear and Shield was the coolest combo
Hi from Brazil ❤❤
Hello Brazil!! 🎉🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🎉
Which armour is that? looks super nice & crisp
Would also love a look at the full build with what stats you are using :)
Hey, thanks for the guide.
Yep yep! Spear still grants fury and might to replace the Axe. 😄

what gear are you using, like cele?
Dragon & Zerker
@@KROOF ok cool, i just have cele at the moment, will have to see what i can buy, do you have a link to your build, where it shows what gear piece you have in the slots
It would have been really nice if spear 2 also gives you resolution
Does it not with the illuminated effect!??
@@KROOF it doesn't give me even when illuminated but it does give it to allies
Nvm it does not give it to allies either
It's currently bugged and not proccing if you don't travel far enough.
Isn't spear underwater weapon??
It is, but this new expansion makes it so that spears can be used on land!
Guardian spear is most wvw oriented
At least is way better then ranger
After having fun woth elementalist spear, I am not impressed with guardians spear.
Can you do necro spear ? Pls
You know… just for you - absolutely!

Yeah, they tried to balance the yellow with the blue. Results varied, I guess.
My pee doesn’t look like that 👀
@@KROOF Lol I was about to say, drink more water!
