Great video as always! One thing I wish web developers were more aware of is the `@font-feature-values` rule that makes it easier to activate specific features only for specific fonts. This is not for features already handled by CSS properties or have identical opentype identifiers across all fonts, but for stuff like character variants (cv01, cv02 etc.) or whole sets of alternative characters (ss01, ss02 etc.). Maybe an idea for a future video? :)
A great video Kevin and Roel, at last we are getting somewhere with typography, without having to work on the computer like I'm back hand setting lead type (I know what I'm talking about because I did use lead fonts to print and learn typography. The amazing added feature are maybe not my cup of tea, but I can see those are the additions the new technology is able to add. Now I only hope those website makers know the first rule of any design: Keep it simple! And I will definitely have a dip in the fondue, thanks Roel ;-)
Ohh this is gonna be fun. I have an adore/despise relationship with typography; it can get so complicated and frustrating at times (mostly in terms of spacing, aligmment, glyph sizes ; thats where ive found a pattern that frustrates me). But it's truly awe-some and very grateful to have an hour of content that ill no doubt pick up something new and helpful!!!
So fun!!!! Had totally forgotten about Color Fonts !! And didn’t know about the font-stretch property. There are so many font properties to adjust; and multi flex I have never heard of and had an issue just this week about transitioning to bold on hover and reflow
I now realize how lazy I've been with my site designs. I use variable fonts when I convert desktop to web, but I've never used them like this. Thank you!
This is very interesting! Great demonstration of thigns i did not know anything about. Will definitely be using those sites to find fonts to use and the CSS to control it.
As always very useful video! In the end i was sitting and thinking how many things i was able to do in other way if i would have know this before. Thanks, your videos always makes me feeling like - wow, really, is it possible )))
Me, when I say, "it's after midnight, I'll put on this hour long video on the details of fonts, that'll surely put me right to sleep." A hour later it's 1:30am and I'm dropping fonts in Wakamai Fondue...
In a recent video, someone mentioned that Kevin actually says "Hello my front-end friends". I'm not a native english speaker, but I was pretty shocked that I haven't noticed until now.
Would love a short about bringing in variable fonts; KPow has a vintage video about bringing in fonts with @font-face but mentioned that doing so with variable fonts require some extra settings. I’d be curious what those are and if there any considerations with bringing in Color Fonts , variable or not
So, if I use Arial as font-family, does another font file get loaded when I set the font-weight? I generally use built-in standard fonts, so perhaps it's a moot point for those?
Superb video. Best is not to load large variant fonts. Load them individually. With new CSS, Is it possible to middle align lowercase chars in relation to the uppercase fonts in the character set?
@@KevinPowell Not is important, not needed. As an good article paragraph, can separate in style for that. To start the story or chapter. Just an silly thought had there. Thanks for responding.
Using variable fonts does not always make sense, for example for Roboto which weighs 1.6 MB... I would understand if it weighed, say, 300 KB and contained all the options and supported all languages. This would be a great solution than downloading 4-6 font options, each 60 KB, for a multilingual site... but in many ways we remain on the old font types because optimization is more important!
This is an important point. It's attractive to be able to have access to all the features variable fonts provide but if you end up only using 400 and 700 anyway, the two files will likely be lighter than the variable file. As KPow mentioned, a lot of those decisions have ro made on a per project basis to figure out which side to sacrifice🌟
Totally agree, it depends on the font and a lot of what you need. The problem with some variable fonts, like roboto, is they put *everything* in there. It's better than using all the individual files you'd otherwise need, but it's still terrible 😅
I don't think Kevin uses PHP, but I agree it'd be a good alternative to static site generator stuff. Especially if all you want to use PHP for is consistent HTML components like headers and footers.
Omnidirectional microphone + not quiet mechanical switches on the keybaord. But also way too hot microphone (too much gain), so it clips/distorts throughout the video when he talks, which I find veyr hard to listen to. The keyboard sound I don't care about though.
This is similar to Roel's talk at CSS Day! So great to see him go into detail on the topic and hear his LOUD keyboard 😂
Everyday CSS amazes me in how wonderful this technology is. It's always progressing in beautiful and astounding ways.
Wow, transitioning the font-variation-settings is just sooooooooooo satisfying ❤❤❤
Thanks!
Thanks so much!
you are a trully CSS legend, cheers from brazil

Are you serious, Kevin Powell? How amazing! Thanks
Thank you for this video. I've learned something new today 😊
Very useful video. Thank you Kevin!
Always starting with
"Hello my friends and friends 😅"

Great video. Super cool tips, but is that a vintage Commodore computer behind Roel? That brings back memories 😀

That's a good question, but I don't think so... Would be happy to learn in wrong though!
