Don is a silver star,..3 Purple Hearts. He thinks. Fine..I won’t push it now. Got a job to do! 2 hours later....after reading the eyes of the other guys....and finally himself got tired of the STINK. With Mike his best friend close by but always attentive to don. Hey! I can smell that from here. If I can smell it......the enemy can smell it. You get rid of that shit right NOW! And one day...a big packet comes in the mail marked "Top Secret" So EVERYONE had to read it...once we opened the 6 or 7 envelops telling us not to open the next envelope unless authorized to view the contents...which you had to open to see if you were authorized to view an envelope telling you not to open the next envelope Seems a ship to ship missile system (not used anymore) had shown some cracks in the guidance fins and was not to be fired until a remedy was found And I guess that's pretty serious....if you're in the Navy But they sent that message to an Army Brigade...in the middle of a prairie.....about 2000km from the nearest salt water Which was so nonsensical we redacted the good parts and published it in our routine orders for the week "Due to technical issues soldiers are ordered not to fire the blank blank missile system until further notice" That's cold war INFOSEC for you

I just call it OpSec. Because as you say, life is a special operation, then I am theoretically always operational. I never talk to someone (about specific details) on the phone in a public setting, like a restaurant. I'll call them back from inside my vehicle where it's a fairly controlled setting. If the server walks up to bring more coffee, I may stop talking depending on the subject matter. Yes, I'm aware that it's a restaurant. However, I an very aware of what I am saying and who may be listening. My significant other and I have code speak. We can have a complete conversation about something and nobody would know what or who we were talking about. It's like a second language. I've actually had people sitting at the table ask, what hell are you talking about. Neither of us are on social media. We don't discuss our personal lives with strangers in public settings. However, you'd be surprised how much free Intel people give you just by listening. I don't have one of those cellphone car set ups. If I did, I wouldn't use it. You can clearly hear the conversation going on outside the car with windows up and engine running. If we are both in a checkout line, we do not have a personal conversation. We are usually taking notes regarding our surroundings. If we see something concerning, one if us will tell the other in code. We may have detailed conversation about it once we are in the vehicle. We have different codes and speak for different situations. Sometimes you forget who you are talking to and use a code for something and the other person just looks at you funny. It really does become second nature. InfoSec or OpSec is the control of information or more accurately, not giving that free information to others. As one paranoid friend of mine use to say, the walls have ears. Always assume someone is listening. Sometimes, you can hand out misinformation. If you can't control the information, then flood the lines with bad information so that they can't tell what is good Intel. Yes, Life certainly is a special operation. Stay frosty

I’m a mom of a GB, we live a not-easy-distance apart and as I’m pretty aware of internet security there are a host of things I wouldn’t ask online. By the time I see him I can either have a list or go with the flow of conversation. This was helpful as I’d been trying to untangle if he’d done Ranger school first, then the SF training.

I just call it OpSec. Because as you say, life is a special operation, then I am theoretically always operational. I never talk to someone (about specific details) on the phone in a public setting, like a restaurant. I'll call them back from inside my vehicle where it's a fairly controlled setting. If the server walks up to bring more coffee, I may stop talking depending on the subject matter. Yes, I'm aware that it's a restaurant. However, I an very aware of what I am saying and who may be listening. My significant other and I have code speak. We can have a complete conversation about something and nobody would know what or who we were talking about. It's like a second language. I've actually had people sitting at the table ask, what hell are you talking about. Neither of us are on social media. We don't discuss our personal lives with strangers in public settings. However, you'd be surprised how much free Intel people give you just by listening. I don't have one of those cellphone car set ups. If I did, I wouldn't use it. You can clearly hear the conversation going on outside the car with windows up and engine running. If we are both in a checkout line, we do not have a personal conversation. We are usually taking notes regarding our surroundings. If we see something concerning, one if us will tell the other in code. We may have detailed conversation about it once we are in the vehicle. We have different codes and speak for different situations. Sometimes you forget who you are talking to and use a code for something and the other person just looks at you funny. It really does become second nature. InfoSec or OpSec is the control of information or more accurately, not giving that free information to others. As one paranoid friend of mine use to say, the walls have ears. Always assume someone is listening. Sometimes, you can hand out misinformation. If you can't control the information, then flood the lines with bad information so that they can't tell what is good Intel. Yes, Life certainly is a special operation. Stay frosty
Quite an interesting site, thank you. Some info I knew, yet putting pieces together is so helpful for me! I’m a mom of a GB, we live a not-easy-distance apart and as I’m pretty aware of internet security there are a host of things I wouldn’t ask online. By the time I see him I can either have a list or go with the flow of conversation. This was helpful as I’d been trying to untangle if he’d done Ranger school first, then the SF training.
