I love that you're forging ahead, Dusty. You admit you don't know everything there is to know about what you're doing but you're putting in the sweat equity and bringing up your kids on your own acreage. Building a legacy, sir!
If you want them to blossom and produce food, you should plant them in groups of two or more. Not all fruit trees need cross pollination but there are plenty of examples of trees never producing fruit until another tree of the same type grows near.
You have accomplished so much, and the home and land you have designed and worked, for your family, is very admirable, Dusty. Well done, good and faithful servant (from your sister in Christ.)
Only knew you from your comedy until today. Excited to learn you're a homesteader! Funny and practical. 😆Looking forward to watching your land series (and your comedy!) Thank you.
You can tell how happy your land makes you. You looked so rosy cheeked and healthy. I bet a landscape architect consult could give you advice on irrigation. Happy holidays! 🤗
Dusty, I worked at Hyman’s in 2011 ish with Eli. I been following your comedy for a couple years now but 1 yr new to you UA-cam. I know all about red clay in contrast to beach sandy loam. Trees look great keep up the hard work. Fish fertilizer works amazingly well for growing. God Bless Brother 🤘🏼
You may need a wheel barrel or UTV soon get some winter rye seed to seed your muddy areas it comes in fast and grows well in the winter. The issue with rye is deer love that stuff. We are really getting into watching you and the family grow you land.
It is cool that you are really into growing fruit trees that will feed you and your family. I would love to see the inside of your home also. Any plans for getting animals, pets?
Have you thought of putting some "temporary" high fencing around the trees to keep the deer away? It's going to look really nice once that grass really starts growing and the trees start maturing. Nice property you have there. Has the onion been put to rest? Blessed Thanksgiving to you and your family!!
You’re a good man Dusty, love your stuff! Enjoy it all man, you earned it! Chillin’ with the fam at the house is the best, doesn’t seem like much when it’s going down, but years from now you too will look back on the days when your kids were young and things were all right as the best of the best days ever…
We had a cherry & apple tree in our back yard. We never had problems with deer and we weren't really out in the sticks, but insects pretty much eat all the fruit. Once they start making fruit you'll either have to spray them or look up an organic method.
Unless you are just cutting away dead material, the best time to prune is in the spring. Cutting live material in the fall can cause the tree to think it needs to grow and put stress on the tree heading into winter when it should be going dormant. Keep the vids coming, and looking forward to your next special!
We have a terrible time with deer eating our trees and plants but for some reason they don't bother the cherry and pear trees. Maybe you'll get a wheel barrel for Christmas to make moving that dirt easier. Happy Land time! ❤
Iowa State University has some fantastic pruning guides available online. Well worth a gander so you don't wreck your structure before the tree is big enough that you can see the problem. You really don't need to put non-composted stuff in the hole so close to the roots. It'll be ok but decomposing those materials in-hole steals nitrogen until they're fully broken down.
I don't think you really need to worry about adding a transport mechanism from a higher swale to a lower one. The water will find it's way downhill over time, but might be more of a groundwater resource than visible as large puddles. That said, young trees will be more at risk of getting too dry until their root systems get well established. I think your comedy is funny and it's cool to see we have a common interesting in trees and permaculture concepts. Good luck!
The 🦌 smell the sweetness of inside when leaves come it'll be more sweet ... I got a 2 yrar old and leaves smell sweet Do Lemon and Lime ...theyll be good cos you can take them inside during winter ..leaves also smell sweet. Grew mine from organic lemon and lime seed. August is great to germinate!!!! Loves Humidity fyi. Im destroying the tree... everything is fine, were having a GOOD Time😂🎉🎉🎉
I love the design for watering fruit trees with rain. I hope it works well! I’m curious why you chose to plant walnut trees. It seems like everyone I know would rather chop them down, because they’re messy and it’s like walking on marbles. What’s your method behind that madness?
Man, the deer ate all the leaves off my young fruit trees to the point…, where I don’t think they’re coming back at my mom’s house in the suburbs. Where my place is in the woods and mountains the fruit trees are doing much better.
They say a new whip should be cut to about your knee. Next spring you will see massive growth. Don’t be fooled by nature, you have to experiment to learn and if the experiment is done with care you will be amazed by its production.
Agreed. I’ve done construction and lumberjack work. So trying to connect with this realm is helpful. My dad in his 60’s is doing this aspect of all the things 🎉 Helpful
Have you tried pruning your fruit trees in the Japanese style of pruning? Master arborist Paul Gautschi has some great learning videos on the method! Gives you the highest fruit production.
If you don't up deer guards around those fruit saplings, you ain't gonna have nothing left in the spring. And fruit trees take full sun. They hate shade. The black walnuts will prob'ly do as understory, but fruit trees need to be in sun full time. Edit: Dude, don't put broken sticks in the bottom of yer plantin' holes! When they decompose yer trees gonna drop and you don't wan't yer root graft anywhere close to ground level. You shoulda just backfilled the hole with a little good, black topsoil. Well, yer still learnin'...good try. Yer good smellin' roots is prob'ly sassafras. You know, what ya' make tea from.
Deer and squirrels will shred/chew, feed on, (aka destroy) your young trees: fruit trees, maple trees, even pine trees. Be smarter than them critters-either fence in your orchard or build individual tree guards or get four mean outdoor dogs.

I’m a country girl so I’m enjoying you being so excited to work your land and trees.

Don’t know why but I genuinely enjoy these
Deer will eat those young fruit trees like candy..

So glad to see another land video! Did your daddy give you those overalls 😊. You look good in them with the white Henley.
It was likely sassafras root if it had that good of a smell. You can make your own root beer from that, Dusty.
My dad made us sassafras tea. He knew where the roots were. It’s smells and tastes so good
Luv ya Dusty!
Yes! We long for the land! I’ve heard from old timers that if you sprinkle steel shavings/dust under a pear tree, it makes them sweeter.
You’re living the dream

You'll have to setup drip irrigation. Watering will be very important in the summer.
You are living the dream.

You’re gonna need a tractor Dusty! Better get another Netflix special, they ain’t cheap! 😂
Make sure hat your poplar tree with the bird house in it can't hit anything if it falls, I can tell it's dead inside by looking at the bark CN
I don't think you really need to worry about adding a transport mechanism from a higher swale to a lower one.

Hope it was not poison ivy root😂 very entertaining. I will say a prayer for your trees.

Dusty, when you get s tractor ne sure you have roll over protection, those freakers will get ya. But you're smart enough to figure it out
Black walnut shells sell to blast barnacles off boats in the gulf of Mexico....Galveston island buys them by the bags!!!!
The smell might have been a sassafras root, which smells a little like Root beer.
Darling little Daisy ❤

I'll be an ol' turly!
Maybe that root that smells good is sassafras?
Those limbs your pruning off that tree brings back nightmares of my youth when they were used for disciplinary reasons. HA!HA!

If you scrape the bark with your fingernail you will see green under the brown bark if the tree is still alive.
Overalls Dusty +1000
If you ever get tired of doing comedy start doing this stuff full time and record it. I'd pay money for content like this.
Agreed. I’ve done construction and lumberjack work. So trying to connect with this realm is helpful. My dad in his 60’s is doing this aspect of all the things 🎉 Helpful
Be careful with putting sticks or branches in the holes. If you get an air pocket down there it could cause the roots to dry out.
Good stuff
Basins around each tree.
Any worry about all that still water in the swales attracting mosquitos?

Dusty one of these days you're going to be walking around the land just picking fruit and eating lol
Talking while he's chewing and everything
Any plans for another Bobandtom guest spot soon?
The Land intro music and Tucker Carlson's UA-cam episodes are remarkably similar.

You need an arborist to consult. My sister was a city forester and wrote articles for the general public on pruning. I could send to you if you want.
You need to purchase a wheel barrow
It's as if he grew up on a generational farm.
Dusty Swale
youre doing a swale job
There's 9 parts?!
Yeah dude you can see the whole journey
@DustySlay Can you be a guest on AYG again? You killed it last time
You want me to help you with those deer?
