My mother used to frequently make this but with little variation. She never mixed citric acid and sugar. But she used to fry lot of finely cut onions which imparted natural sweetness. And she also used to add 1/2 tsp ginger garlic paste (we never use garlic in our recipes but she used to make this particular item this way only so we are habituated to eat this mixture this way only).
