You ain't the only one. He kept moving his arm across the table and I kept thinking he was going to knock it right onto the floor. I had a perfect specimen of one and my cousin was over for a visit, picked it up and started to play keep away with it. Needless to say after that my collection has not been accessible to non conchologists as I keep it locked up now and my cousin hasn't been invited over since 1980. At the time it was my most prized possession.
You may already know this but the two tritons are different species. Your new one is Charonia variegata (Caribbean and Mediterranean species) where as your previous one is Charonia tritonis (Pacific species
All the shells are amazing. I love the murax. If the shells have the operculum I guess that means they took them alive. 😞 Really cool shells tho. 🤗🐚🐚🐚🐚
Do you ever sell what you buy in mystery boxes on shellcade? I keep seeing things that I would love to buy. I love sea urchins and would love to get my hands on some of the ones in this video. Nevermind! You just answered my question.
My favorite was the murex just beautiful. If the shells still have their operculum I am especially concerned that they may have been alive still when they were collected. You didnt mention where you bought them. I hope you probably trust the seller or you wouldnt have bought them. Please respond.
Yeah, so all these shells are actually consigned and I havnt purchased them, I’m simply selling for someone else and as it was a mystery box, I don’t know what’s going to be in these, so I do believe all the shells were found empty/dead to the best of my knowledge
In virtually all cases the operculum indicates the animal was alive when caught. I have been fortunate to find a handful of specimens where the animal had just died and the operculum was intact. My favorite among them was a giant Florida horse conch which is nearly two feet long. It was right after a tropical storm and had been washed onto the sand and left there. I was the first on the beach and it was 90 minutes after sunrise with the tide low and I saw it and was going to rescue it and put it back in the water but the animal just hung out of the shell indicating it had died. Live snails when probed will retreat into the shell and hold on pretty tightly.
