So you mentioned a few times how some of the ads were just spoiling the whole story, and that comes down to a difference in Japanese vs Western ad ideals. In America, ads for movies and games are usually like "Here's a few scenes from the beginning, here's some dialogue hinting at the overarching story, now come enjoy this to see where it goes!" In Japan, they basically do it backwards. "Here's a few scenes from the middle, a scene or two from near the end, now come enjoy this to find out how the heck we got there!"
America: “Heres a bit of the story now, learn what happens next by playing the game.” Japan: “Yeah, that’s me. You’re probably wondering how I got in this situation.”
Anyone else remember how PV 2 of Persona 5 was exclusive to Japanese buyers of a special edition of Persona 4 Dancing so all the leaked UA-cam uploads got taken down and people tried to disguise it as videos about economics? Good times, first time we heard Last Surprise as well.
18:58 Funny story. So, I pre-ordered P3Portable when it was released because I wanted both the OST and the Junpei cap that were part of the bonus for pre-order. Apparently, my copy was shipped late so I got a very apologetic email and they said they were including a gift as well. So when my copy arrived, I not only got my Junpei cap and OST, but they ALSO threw in a S.E.E.S armband as well. This pretty much cemented me prordering SMT and Persona games since this was my first experience with GOOD customer service from a company like Atlus.
@@DRAG0NSPIRIT10 Yeah, I was lucky enough that the hat fit me as I was kind of worried about Asian sizes being a factor in how it fit on my head so I ordered a little bigger than normal. I even used it and the armband to do a Junpei cosplay as well a few years ago.
AHHHH Crystal you didn't show it in this video but in the first full length Royal trailer there's a clip of Haru staring out of the helicopter (from when they escape Maruki's Palace in the game) and in the background you can see a black and blue striped leg. When that trailer first came out, Akechi fans went INSANE over that clip because it matched Akechi's Black Mask costume & proved he could be alive after the Engine Room - or at the very least, there was going to be more content WITH HIM BEING HIS TRUE SELF!!! The theories that were flying around were amazing & the hype was CRAZY. Then the next trailer came out & as you pointed out, you can see Akechi's new Black Mask combat icon and his full body in cutscenes. It was the best feeling ever to realise that Atlus was gonna do him justice this time around. Just thought you'd like to know since ur a big Akechi fan :))

Tbh, I loved the aesthetic for the Chair trailer of Persona 5. The words “You are slave. Want emancipation?” Stuck in my mind along with the balls and chain. It made it seem like the game was going to be a LOT darker
The Persona 5 trailers section was such a walk down memory lane for me, I had literally just beat P3P and watched the P4 anime when that chair teaser came out and I was already obsessed, this leading into the next few trailers where I remember I was super excited for Yusuke's first reveal (and was theorizing he was gonna be evil lol), all of that hyping up and culminating in me buying a PS3 in 2017 specifically so I could play Persona 5, and when it came out I got super lucky that it was a holiday week for me, so I literally just locked myself in my room and played it all day and all night, not only beating the game but also getting the platinum trophy, it's stupid but it's probably one of my favorite moments of my life, so thank you for helping me relive that, great video! :D
Honestly, I totally loved the chair teaser at the time, and still kinda do. It was so mysterious and foreboding, and gave you just enough to speculate about the direction Persona 5 would take. Plus, I love any time the key staff get hyped up like that. I would totally be down for a teaser along those lines for whenever Persona 6 officially gets announced.
Fun fact; Persona 4 Dancing was originally going to be made by the devs of the Hatsune Miku Project Diva games. In the early trailers you can even see that the gameplay is very similar to the Project Diva games while being very different from the final product we got. This is because Atlus was unhappy with how the game's quality was turning out and decided to take over the development of the game.
Didnt they literally make the game tho? Maybe ATLUS got involved but the game was still made by them from what I’ve heard. That’s also why Miku is DLC. And plus, the project diva games were really good. The games were really good under their specific dev team before it was dissolved after F 2nd. The quality of the games tanked after that, and it’s likely that the quality was just fine. You’re making it sound like ATLUS saved the game from being poorly made lol Anyway, the only reason they’ve Miku games have made a come back is cuz of Project Sekai (made with a different dev team).
I am so sad the little mini trailers for Royal didn't make it in where they sprinkled scenes at the end of each from the 3rd semester to confuse EVERYONE.

I always forget how deep-seated my love for "Heartful Cry" is until I hear it out of the blue, what feels like once every few years. P3's OST is such a weird mixed bag but it still gets me in a couple places.
It took some time for Atlas to get things nailed out (I think in part due to the acquisition of the studio by SEGA); but there is no denying, P5 ended up being stylish as f*ck in the end.
So... where is the Persona 2 "Another Side" trailer that showed how connected Persona 2's cast is with both games? That trailer was even given out when P2 EP came stateside, and it's dripping with ooze of 90s anime!
Funny enough, my very first contact with the persona series and smt as a whole was reading from people online complaining they've been starring at a chair for 7 month. I'd check back every couple of month in just to see how long these idiots would be staring at a chair until P5 came in.
Persona 3 was my first Persona and I distinctly remember 9 years old me being so excited for Persona 4 when the trailer dropped. I bet my comments from my old acc are still there. 🤣 Same with Persona 5, I remember when people kept calling Ren "chair kun" since the trailer was so vague and also disturbing tbh. The trailer was where I learned the word "emancipation" lol. Thank you for making me remember core fond memories I've had waiting for these wonderful games to drop. 😊
@@drilltotheheavens1695 I couldnt play P3 and P4 until I was around 11 actually haha. Just watched my big bro play P3 it and instantly got hooked. It was made easier cuz he let me use his New Game Plus save files and guided me whenever I was stuck which was a lot of times hahah.
I'm not sure I've watched a Persona trailer before watching this! What a journey they take you on! The Dancing one with the wild use of English in particular.
I will never not find that one 15 second P3 trailer where the man dies screaming bloody murder funny. Especially with your reaction lol. This was so fun to watch again.
I hate the fact they hide Akechi so much in the P5R trailers aside from the character trailer tailored towards him in the P5R release cycle. Like they showed the Black Mask and the traitor scene, at that point just go all out and show his confidant and his attitude like come ON Atlus show us our boy! I hope that if we ever have another game with him he's more advertised because he's so popular now in both the west and in Japan
To better explain why the japanese trailers are spoiling so much stuff: In the japanese mindset, it's a case of avoiding "scamming people", basically making sure their audience knows what they're going to be buying/participating in, basically showing up front to let them know if it's something they want. It's why in so much japanese marketing you basically see stuff that is meant to be a big plot reveal in the thing that's being advertised. Because they see "plot surprises" as basically scams because they didn't see it coming before they went to go see or play the thing that's being advertised. It's basically the same as watching a movie review to know if you'd like the movie or not so as to not waste your money, instead of, you know, going to go watch the thing to judge for yourself. If you get upset about what you payed for, there is a magical thing called "refunds". But that's just my dumb American brain talking, I prefer not being robbed of the storytelling and its surprise even if it cost me money to do so, if I didn't like the thing I paid for, I'd just ask for my money back.
jokes aside i unironically the chairs in the vanilla persona 5 reveal trailer left a pretty strong impression and i liked how overdramatic and dark it was compared to the actual game lol
God I remember Persona 5 trailers got me so hyped. Also: FUNNY how we all thought it was gonna come early. And then it got delayed...and delayed...and delayed 😅
Yea they completely changed the team in the 9 or so years between P2 and P3, so the entire feel was completely different as it broke from it's original SMT roots to become it's own thing. The evolution is very interesting but its a choice is a very good one imo.
These trailers really got me thinking about time. Like I was 3 when persona 3 came out and I’m just sitting here like holy shit that game is almost 20 years old….persona 5 technically came out when I was 13…I’m now 20. Then it got me thinking about the characters. And if persona five takes place around 2016 then 2009 p3p Ken (who is like ten right? Imma say 10 cuz that rhymes with Ken. ) Is like the same age as makoto,Haru, and Akechi in that point of time, and my brain refuses to accept that information.
0:30 Clippit approved, Clippit tested. Clippit confirmed for P6? XD 1:03:27 Gotta say, it was so wild seeing them wait until THIS P5 Dancing trailer to show Futaba AT ALL!
Japanese ads remind me of a habbit i had as a kid when reading books. I used to hate reading a book to the end and feeling unsatisfied by the endings so whenever I wanted to know if a book was worth reading Id take it off the shelf and read the last page. Like it would not be enough info to tell me much about the books story but it gave me a sense of what the ending not felt like. If that last page wasnt enough id read the last cupple. It was also sometimes fun after reading that last page and reading the book that i had information the characters in the book didnt. I had a sense of where they were going and what they would do in some scenes. It was a interesting experience.
aw, i’m disappointed that you didn’t see the anime trailer for persona 2 IS and EP. that one is amazing, it’s like a glimpse of what a p2 anime adaptation could’ve been
Around the time P4D came out, somebody made a parody trailer for a cart racer - "Person 4: Driving All Day." I assume that Atlus shut it down, but I kind of wish that it had been a real game.
7:56 I can't get over the fact that they captured footage with the name Roger for the main protagonist. 45:50 Oh yeah! This teaser dropped when Atlus was still working with Dingo on P4DAN. They eventually shifted to just being a support dev, but the game was going to be a lot closer to a traditional Project Diva game. I kinda wish it would've cuz I never liked the UI they went with for the released game and the P3/P5 dancing games. Putting the stuff you need to see on the very outside of the screen just seemed like an odd move...fine for a portable console, I think, but not much more. Oh man and the P5R trailer. People were theorizing that Yoshizawa was a new female protagonist. Those hopes were dashed incredibly quickly, though.
Japan ads about Persona 3: Advertise the game as a mystery game (including the use of "Deep Breath") with JRPG elements and an eeriee story. America advertising Persona 3: Translates the dialogues about the eerie story and leaves the scenes completely untouched outside of UI (now translated) but the game doesn't seem omnious thanks to "Changing Seasons" playing.
I was only 12 y/o 9 years ago when that BS Persona 5 teaser came out. Now… I’m 21, playing the mainstream trilogy backwards, with P4G being my favorite of the 3. Oh, how time flies.😅 I still plan to play Revelations/1, 2: Innocent Sin, and 2: Eternal Punishement when I have the time.😆/😭
Eternal Punishment and by association Innocent Sin has amazing story writing and symbolism. The symbolism of P2 is the blueprint of the way the messages are conveyed in the Hashino games (with the games themes about spiritualism, conspiratorial thinking, and it's consequences on a societal level).
There was a funny commercial that featured Persona 5 about the lady on the Japanese ¥5000 bill. It was mostly about how the cost PS4 was reduced though.
I think showing the end is fine. You could never get the plot from the characters floating around, but it's hype. 53:57 Persona 5 was weaker in how it addressed its themes, but it was *incredibly* designed. Even the HUD is so cool. 33:01 But it's Ranma's voice D:
Oh wow, I had no idea P4Arena was called P4U for Ultimate Arena in Japan. Speaking of that, didn’t Atlus reserve a website domain for _P5U_ ? Really makes a girl think :)
So you mentioned a few times how some of the ads were just spoiling the whole story, and that comes down to a difference in Japanese vs Western ad ideals.

I can see the appeal in both approaches.
America: “Heres a bit of the story now, learn what happens next by playing the game.”
Japan: “Yeah, that’s me. You’re probably wondering how I got in this situation.”
I will say the Japanese trailers were compelling, but spoiling shinjiros death is crazy 😭

"The body of a child, the brain of a genius!" in reference to Naoto I'm 90% sure is a Detective Conan reference and I dunno how to feel about that.
You really had to be there for the true magic of Chair-kun and friends
People shipped them together
So... where is the Persona 2 "Another Side" trailer that showed how connected Persona 2's cast is with both games? That trailer was even given out when P2 EP came stateside, and it's dripping with ooze of 90s anime!
i remember first seeing the gameplay trailer for persona 5 and the collective community thinking we played as a villain
I’m sorry you were playing Persona 3 at 9 years old?
@@drilltotheheavens1695 I couldnt play P3 and P4 until I was around 11 actually haha. Just watched my big bro play P3 it and instantly got hooked. It was made easier cuz he let me use his New Game Plus save files and guided me whenever I was stuck which was a lot of times hahah.
@@yurikuki that’s honestly really cute. Must be some good memories.
Thank you for making this interesting tier-list about the trailers!
That P1 PSP western release trailer is just a big "WE'RE SORRY" lmao
I can't believe she didn't watch the Persona 2 anime trailer that was included with the original release of P2, that would break her mind.
that's not an trailer, just a bonus thing that came with the game.
It's not a persona game. But I wish they would've included Joker's Smash trailer. That did a lot for the persona franchise.
The fact that theu commercialize the heck outnof Vishnu in Persona 1 and yet he's basically a secret character is just....
To better explain why the japanese trailers are spoiling so much stuff:
In the japanese mindset, it's a case of avoiding "scamming people", basically making sure their audience knows what they're going to be buying/participating in, basically showing up front to let them know if it's something they want.
Average American mindset
@@Kuroko_Simp Fair, but the reason as to why they put the spoilers in their marketing IS true.
P3 Answers was released as a standalone disk as well as FES so thats why they also advertised it.
jokes aside i unironically the chairs in the vanilla persona 5 reveal trailer left a pretty strong impression and i liked how overdramatic and dark it was compared to the actual game lol
God I remember Persona 5 trailers got me so hyped. Also: FUNNY how we all thought it was gonna come early. And then it got delayed...and delayed...and delayed 😅
Can’t believe Persona 5 almost came out 8 years ago
8 years in September 15, considering the game originally released on that date in 2016.
AAAAA that first English P3 trailer has me GROOVIN
Yea they completely changed the team in the 9 or so years between P2 and P3, so the entire feel was completely different as it broke from it's original SMT roots to become it's own thing. The evolution is very interesting but its a choice is a very good one imo.
the first p3 trailer started looking like an amv or edit
45:49 this trailer was a rollercoaster of emotions
These trailers really got me thinking about time. Like I was 3 when persona 3 came out and I’m just sitting here like holy shit that game is almost 20 years old….persona 5 technically came out when I was 13…I’m now 20. Then it got me thinking about the characters. And if persona five takes place around 2016 then 2009 p3p Ken (who is like ten right? Imma say 10 cuz that rhymes with Ken. ) Is like the same age as makoto,Haru, and Akechi in that point of time, and my brain refuses to accept that information.
9:59 what’s the name of the song that plays during this trailer?
Maya's theme p3 version
49:50 CHAIR KUN HAS ARRIVED
0:30 Clippit approved, Clippit tested. Clippit confirmed for P6? XD
1:03:27 Gotta say, it was so wild seeing them wait until THIS P5 Dancing trailer to show Futaba AT ALL!
4:34 WHAT IS THE ACTUAL NAME FOR THIS SONG I NEED IT
deep breath - persona 3
@@CaikeyBakey24feeling all pressured by the peers and the media...
Getting jiggy with confined place, I'm telling ya
Some of these trailers makes it look like persona is an action packed series lol
man, i still remember when that p5r trailer dropped and i was hyped at the thought of a femc
Dude, seeing trailers for P4A makes me want a P5A even more. I just want to see the Persona 5 cast interact with an older Persona 4 cast.
Becoming rat in p5 was my favorite part of any game
aw, i’m disappointed that you didn’t see the anime trailer for persona 2 IS and EP. that one is amazing, it’s like a glimpse of what a p2 anime adaptation could’ve been
it's not a trailer, just a bonus that came with the game
6:41 “at this point show shinji why dont you!?”
9:58 “I WAS JOKING-“
i love that the p3 trailers reactions are the same as playing the game: vibing to the music while depresing stuff happen
Around the time P4D came out, somebody made a parody trailer for a cart racer - "Person 4: Driving All Day." I assume that Atlus shut it down, but I kind of wish that it had been a real game.
Seeing all these trailers and commercials for Persona 4 really reminded me just how much that game exploded in popularity.
Those hopes were dashed incredibly quickly, though.
oh hey, I have that exact same necklace you're wearing, noice!
Oh, how time flies.😅
I still plan to play Revelations/1, 2: Innocent Sin, and 2: Eternal Punishement when I have the time.😆/😭
Eternal Punishment and by association Innocent Sin has amazing story writing and symbolism. The symbolism of P2 is the blueprint of the way the messages are conveyed in the Hashino games (with the games themes about spiritualism, conspiratorial thinking, and it's consequences on a societal level).
@@phillemon7664 - I’ll keep that as a screenshot, Phil!😁🤳
9:39 I think was a a promo for FES.
There was a funny commercial that featured Persona 5 about the lady on the Japanese ¥5000 bill.
It was mostly about how the cost PS4 was reduced though.
Ok whoever did the editing for the P4D Rise section at 49:35 had me dying laughing
Wondering when this vid will be updated with Persona 6 trailer. Hopefully soon.
Look at how far it's come. If I had been a fan of the PS2 games while they were the big deal, P5 would've been the craziest reveal I've ever seen.
Ah I remember staying up until 3am to see the Persona 5 announcement and the birth of Chair-kun
It still blows my mind that Cabbage boy's theme was used in the trailer
i can not express the genuine anger/excitement i felt when i saw akechi in the p5r trailers
7:04 was my favorite bit!
46:30 Wow this smile is MEGIDOLAON CUTE
I think showing the end is fine. You could never get the plot from the characters floating around, but it's hype.
53:57 Persona 5 was weaker in how it addressed its themes, but it was *incredibly* designed. Even the HUD is so cool.
33:01 But it's Ranma's voice D:
You never seen the original P4 intro?? It’s so good much better than shadow world
Oh wow, I had no idea P4Arena was called P4U for Ultimate Arena in Japan. Speaking of that, didn’t Atlus reserve a website domain for _P5U_ ? Really makes a girl think :)
There was more than that along with Strikers but the 25th anniversary passed us by with no new entry..
Elizabeth's VA was surely having fun.
I received my Morgana onesie today and its really awesome 😁
Sam Riegel screaming as Teddie haunts my dreams.
1:43 who is this ??
I think it’s Pinoy, the editor. He does some funny stuff like that
