CrossFit - "The Foundation Is Nutrition"

  • Combining the CrossFit training methodology with a diet of meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar brings "a jet stream of adaptation," says CrossFit founder Greg Glassman.
    In the pyramid Glassman created, nutrition is the foundation, with met-cons, gymnastics, weightlifting and throwing, and sport following.
    "Each level builds on the level below it," explains Nicole Carroll, director of certification. "If your nutrition sucks, these things will not be where they could be if it were more solid."
    Likewise, Glassman says CrossFit favors Barry Sears' Zone Diet "because it does give me accurate and precise prescription for caloric intake and, more importantly, the exact levels of macronutrient that I can start at."
    Likewise, trainers and coaches can make informed decisions on how to tweak an athlete's diet for improved performance, he says.
    CrossFit HQ trainer Pat Sherwood says nutrition isn't an either/or aspect of training.
    "It's not quality or quantity. It can and it should be both."

    Best advice from this comes from the very end, "if it has a label on it - it isn't food".
    Powerful stuff. Too bad not all cross fitters follow this method..

    The way I see this type of paleo eating, is that it's more of a template: you can fix it the way you want to/need to. E.g. if you need more starches, you eat sweet potatoes, potatoes, etc. You eat the way you need to in order to function well.

    Reading through the comments, I'm SO GLAD that finally some people know the truth and are mentioning high carbs/high fruits instead of that much fat. Anyone who is currently following the advice from this video, please do yourself a favor and look into eating less fat and way more carbs. I eat 15 bananas a day, several potatoes/sweet potatoes, tons of vegetables, chick peas, a few organic eggs, and very little fat. So why do I still have a sixpack even though I'm eating that many bananas?

    I can respect that. My time in Navy EOD made me a bit of a stickler on functionality. I remember when MCRD San Diego tooled up to accommodate the new crossfit curriculum.
    My intention was to point out that most olympic coaches can't perform (or even look like they can perform) as their athletes. The same goes for professional sports. Look at NFL coaches.
    Ultimately, what matters is the number of their athletes that can whip the athletes of other trainers. Dog trainers are not dogs.

    Sesbb30... There is 2 kinds of carbs.. Simple and complex. Good natural sugars are found in fruits and sweet potatoes which is the main source of healthy carbs. That should be it. Complex carbs are what you get when you look on the back of a skittles PAC and see 53 carbs... There's a huge difference in sugars.

    iifym is broscience too, (yeh it can work if you already very fit and healthy , but were just fat cause you used to overeat and now suddenly stopped doing that, in other words any calorie restricted diet will make you loose weight when you young and healthy). But at least this backed up by the government they telling us to eat like this too now ( maybe not exactly but similar, i think government still thinks we should eat more carbs than protein, theres nothing wrong with that imo)

    You cant get addicted to supplements but you can to stimulants. U wanna get to that weight I suggest eat 205g of protein and lots of good fats like nuts, stop eating carbs at 5 oclock and the ony carb sources should be 2 bowls of porridge with soy milk, 1 medium sweet potatoe and unlimited fibrous veg. Id go with 2400 cals a day to stay energetic whilst cutting

    hence his "if it has a food label on it, think twice" comment. Unless you're buying some kinda of pre-marinated meat (think Teryaki whatever...), buying meat, vegetables, fruit, and nuts/seeds will not yield you abnormally high sugar content. The "It's not what I'm eating that's making me fat" mentality is just a sad reality that's pervaded out culture. It's a mindset very similar to the "I have nothing to wear" concept (while standing in front of a closet full of clothes). Change your MINDSET.

    And what local vegetables were available they ate too...but alot of "Healthy Fats" werent available. Yet my people have throughout history been known for their ability to run great distances. I believe in a variable carb approach, but still even on the highest days no more than 100-150g of high quality grain based carbs...and at least as much from veggies and fruits. I DO NOTagree with full paleo...but there are successful athletes with tons of endurance who live that way! :0

    Saturated fat raises low density lipoproteins, thus increases risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Carbohydrates (CHO) are our primary fuel. Glucose is stored in the liver for our brains and in glycogen for our muscles. Complex CHO does not raise blood cholesterol. It is important to avoid refined CHO. We need whole grains. Most people consume 3X the recommended amount of protein per day. Excess protein is converted to carbon skeletons, which are then stored as fat.

      I can't tell if your comment was intended to rile up people like me, but if so, you win. So here goes: Your first statement has little to no scientific support. Dietary fats leading to increases in LDL concentration hasn't been shown in the literature--it's an old theory and it's on its way out. CHO, much like protein, when over - consumed is also stored as fat. Many people over consume protein, but this is far less detrimental than the overconsumption of carbohydrate in our culture.

Instead eat veggies and nuts like almonds, macadamian nuts and if you want carbs sweet potatoes, white potatoes. Gluten free oats are good. Just make sure not to eat too much carbs and starches, It's about balance, but I would stay away from refined carbs, processed foods, sugars, vegetable oils, gluten, dairy.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was an amazing bodybuilder, but there are guys out there with more knowledge and better equipped to train people on how to do it. It's not always a straight line between the two.

This is the food that everyone should be eating, and it doesn't cost more than junk food because you won't be as hungry, and you won't eat as much because you'll actually be nourished.

    I like the philosophy behind Paleo, so don't get me wrong... but there is one thing seriously wrong with it. Different human populations (races) have adapted to dairy to different degrees because of their differing evolutionary background. People of European heritage are mostly very well adapted to dairy, and therefore dairy is usually an excellent source of nutrients for them. Africans and Asians have not adapted to dairy as well, so they would generally be better off to avoid it.
    For those interested in this - research the rates of lactose (in)tolerance among various human populations. You'll find a very wide dispersion (from some populations being 90%+ lactose tolerant, to other populations being 90%+ lactose intolerant).

    I am involved with crossfit, but this video sounds like cult shit. Everyone knows that they shouldn't eat ice cream and Twinkies every day. Having discipline to eat right most of the time is the key to success and don't let anyone tell you that you are doing it wrong.

    • @bamdam2848
      @bamdam2848 8 років тому

      Having supreme discipline is what It's about in anything in life. Whether it comes to training, playing a sport, instrument at your job, at the university and so on. Usually many people suck at balancing. When they fall off they fall off fully and lose themselves. There are still many that know how to balance but that's not the majority unfortunately. I had a friend back when I was at the University of Michigan and he would party hardcore and be able to wake up go to class study for 7 hours and get A's. Me I wouldn't wake up on time and my grades would fall down so I had to stop partying days before school. It's like that with food with me to, If I slip up for 1-2 days I know what will happen.

    Fat loss is primarily about calorie deficit. Let's say that it takes 2500 calories per day to maintain your weight and you take in 2000 per day of carbs. You'll still lose 1lb a week. Now obviously you want a well rounded healthy diet where you consume junk food sparingly in moderation. But complex carbs are NOT the enemy. If you train like an athlete, they provide fuel for your body. Personally, I'm a fan of intermittent fasting.

    Video is completely flawed. Rich Froning admits to not eating that healthy of a lifestyle. 4x crossfit champ....

    • @7pastorb
      @7pastorb 9 років тому +19

      Yes Rich Froning doesn't live by the Paleo lifestyle etc. But this is a Correlation Fallacy. Rich Froning is an individual who is a genetically superior athlete. He trains more than most any athlete I have ever seen and is in fantastic shape. However being 4 time crossfit champion does not mean that if you replicate his nutrition and workouts that you will attain his results.
      Personally I find that a "Near Paleo" eating habit works best for me. I am Native American and so for 1000's of years my people being from the east coast subsisted on fish and other lean meats and local roots, tubers, nuts, seeds and fruit. We did not start using grains until the 16th century. Studies have shown on several occasions that people of minority ethnicity should consume much less carbohydrates than someone of European or Asian descent(spelling?)
      I find that when I consume carbs even the high quality low glycemic etc. I feel terrible and I bloat and I am sluggish. When I am eating more fat and less carbs and eating more vegetables and proteins I have energy to spare.
      The biggest flaw with the Paleo lifestyle is that it puts pretty much everyone under an umbrella and says "ALL OF YOU EAT THE SAME THINGS" Obviously this is flawed thinking since individuals with different metabolic conditioning and varied ethnicities cannot all eat exactly the same way.
      Therefore we each must experiment with our nutrition and see what works for us. I think we can all agree that an eating habit that is low in processed sugar, high in Omega 3 and Omega 6 fats in the proper ratio, High in lean proteins, A lot of veggies and some fruit, and some starch is a fairly healthy way to eat. This is a blueprint for the meal plan of a bodybuilder who is leaning out for competition..its no wonder these crossfitters are so ripped. But it isn't sustainable for people who are true endurance athletes like Tri-Athletes, Marathoners etc. These people consume tons of carbs and a lot of them are what would be considered "low quality"...especially when carb loading for a race.
      There is also a growing body of research that suggests that heart disease is linked more closely to being overweight than to moderate to high fat consumption.
      I have spent a lot of time over the last 12 years training people of various ethnic backgrounds, fitness levels, and experience levels and if there is one thing I have learned it is this; there is almost no one size fits all ideology that will apply to every single person. Some basics like exercise and eating healthy=better health kind of go without saying but other than that things can be customizable to the individual.
      So this video isn't entirely flawed from a nutritional standpoint but more from an empirical standpoint. The Paleo tends to believe they have the diet to fit all humans and it simply isn't true.

      Papa Georgio It's all dependent on how many calories an athlete is capable of burning during training.
      But I would agree that eating small-moderate sized portions of nutrient dense foods would be completely insufficient for super-athletes like Froning.

    _"What's causing heart disease is not dietary fat intake, but excessive consumption of carbohydrates."_
    This is a clearly wrong statement that contradicts an overwhelming consensus of scientific research. Yes, higher sugar intake obviously correlates to cardiovascular disease rates, but this doesn't allow such a radical statement.
    I am not aware about a single study that has shown clearly that saturated fat is a better caloric source than moderately glycaemic carbohydrates, but of numerous who contradict to this.

      I feel amazing. Meat, veggies, some fruit, some nuts and seeds, little legumes, starches like sweet potatoes, white potatoes won't kill you either. I still have gluten free oats and white rice at times. I just believe the idea is to not eat processed bullshit and reduce sugar and refined carb intake as much as possible. Just makes sense. So I guess I'm paleo but I mess with it a bit to make it less cult like and fit my needs.

      I refused to give up the idea that eating heavy vegetable was the way to go. Kept my training the same and finally agreed to a two week Keto diet with a friend. I kept it for 8 weeks and lost 25.4 lbs and am at 13% body fat now. I eat plenty of dark green leafy vegetables and berries, but I'm a good 60-70% fats every day. I never believed this would work, but my BP improved, my cholesterol dropped, my triglycerides dropped...blood glucose dropped. I was always "healthy", but shit, now I am cut and muscular...and all I did was adopt a similar nutritional regime to this. No products, no pills, no gimmicks....so, I'm not selling anything. Give it 2 weeks and see if this is for you. I miss fruit and yogurt and oatmeal...but, those are special occasion foods now. Not part of my daily, weekly or even monthly nutrition. That's all....

    My problem with this diet is the huge amount of meat (as a European, it's way way too much...!) and too little fruits. They are right to suggest no added sugar, no processed stuff and more veggies...but beyond that it's just not for me. Also, the right kind of bread (whole grain with no added crap, baked in a bakery) is very healthy.

    I was diagnosed with GP. I am overweight. In 2003 I had a laparoscopic Nissen and ever since I cannot drink carbonated drinks and I can only drink with a straw. When I was a kid I have always had a very hard time being able to eat many different types of foods like many fruits and vegetables. My entire life if I was to eat a salad I would get sick the minute I put it in my mouth let alone if I was to get any of it down? For example, if I have a burger it could only have the bun meat and cheese and no spread of any kind. No mayo etc. If I was to have a tuna fish sandwich it could only be made with butter plane. I have been trying to lose weight but have been having a hard time doing so? I was just put on a medication called Metformin because I was told I was producing too much insulin and that was causing me to gain weight? I hate the food pyramid and even the my plate because they don't address issues like GP and other dietary issues? Because I am legally blind and use a power chair with limited mobility it's hard to read labels and count calories to be healthy and know what will help me lose weight and live healthier? I wish someone could make a video about this issue?

    You also need to learn about all the different types of fat , and how much of them is ok to eat, at what age and activity level. Overeating anything can be bad for you. Just cause fat can be good for us in low levels, for our test levls and what not, doesnt mean a regular geek who just started working out can continue to eat junk food , if they wanna get healthy and fit. And dude before a skinny geek can get jacked he has to be at least somewhat healthy already ( or the boyd will just get fat )

  • @Bone79459
    @Bone79459 11 років тому

    Sorry buddy but you are so far from the truth. If you are doing crossfit there is no reason to have a low fat intake. Fat feeds your muscles. I eat a jar of peanut butter a week (not to mention bacon, sausage, eggs, and hash browns (organic) every single day for breakfast for over 2 years) and have amazing blood levels all around...and my 6-pack to boot! Everyone is different...and there is NOTHING wrong with the fat from peanut butter.

  • @taekler
    @taekler 11 років тому

    Well rich froning is the most winning crossfit athlete. He basically only eats peanut butter and drinks milk and eat's a few eags some times. The main thing getting in shape is you're will and work ethic. Nutritions not that big a factor, as long as yyou just eat around 3-4 times a day and listen to you're body. If you feel like blue berrys, go eat some, if you feel like mango, go buy mango, eat the mango. listen to yourself.

  • @cp24eva

    The main goal of a Paleo like diet is to eat like the way they used to eat before agriculture. pasteurizing milk and growing crops, etc. Not to say this diet is perfect, but all in all, overly processed foods aren't good FOR YOU. They are not helpers. The best is natural. Meaning meat and veggies and fruits. I have a problem with them saying no sugar. Fruit can't be that bad for you. I eat cherries all the time. I say whatever nutrition you found that keeps you lean, go for it and workout.

    emouch 1 look up Rich Froning...titled fittest man on earth..he is full blast PaleoZone and is extremely fit and has tons of endurance coupled with real functional strength. That said i am NOT a Paleo fan, it is a very generalized approach to nutrition that puts everyone in the same box. Supposedly based on the diet of early man but early mans diet varied widely based on geography and socialogical variables. There exists evidence that my people regularly ate breads and local grains

    i just believe in living a healthy lifestyle would help ppl get into shape...if you eat healthy (the real healthy foods) and exercise you will be fit and happy...as for a very low carb (low starch)...well for some it works and for some it doesn't i believe in finding the right nutrition that "your" body needs to function...like for me i consume about 3500-5500 calories a day but its all clean healthy fats, starchy carbs (ALOT OF STARCHY CARBS), veggies, leans meats, and i'm super ripped and lean
