- This vintage Star Wars Dewback has been in my collection for a good few years now and I've been slowly finding the missing pieces for it. There are a couple of issues that I need to repair on him before it's ready for display like fixing the reins, removing paint and repairing the body. Let's get him fixed up.
You can get the STL file for the saddle here:

All the years I was collecting Star Wars stuff as a kid and I never saw one of these once.
I love what you do. I’ve been off and on collecting toys, my whole life, but it is your videos that have truly motivated me to get back into it. My specialty and area of expertise is antique Japanese swords, which I do appraisals as well as translations for major study groups around the world. I think there is a direct parallel between what you do in the mentality of restoration of Star Wars figures and other toys and The restoration and repair of Japanese swords. 30 years ago when I started collecting Japanese swords, there is a very uneducated group of collectors that frowned upon the restoration and preservation of the sword. “ leave them as they’re found” Was a common theme among American collectors at that time. It wasn’t until the birth of the Internet and direct interactions with professionals from Japan that educated us Non-Japanese collectors that preservation was the key to keeping these relics around for hundreds if not 1000 years. In order to keep these beautiful toys, in a state preservation, there must be preservationists like yourself, so I truly appreciate what you do my friend. With all Collectible there will always be a group of people that only see the monetary value of things. That was certainly true with Japanese swords and is true with vintage toys. But there are many of us that believe there is a much greater responsibility of keeping these historical artifacts in a state of appreciation.
I would like to become a patron of your page. How do I do this?
P.S. great work!
Thanks. That's really nice to hear. I use the term Wabi-Sabi a lot to describe what I do. Fixing things and enjoying their imperfections. There is no such thing as a mint toy. And the played with nature of them gives them a story that should be enjoyed. Cheers
I actually like that 3D printed saddle more than the original. I never liked the closure on the original.
Phenomenal Work Dave!! LEGO really came in clutch again on those reigns. Very Nice!👊😎
Just pulled my Dewback out. Had it since I was a kid. The paint on the bottom looks just like yours if not a little thicker all over, up the neck and down the tail not just the belly. I however have none of the reign strap left just the muzzle/mouth part. Nice fix on the reign, going to have to go dig though my lego now. Also seeing those nails painted makes me wish Kenner had painted them to begin with.
Hey Dave
The Star Wars crazies should be happy you restored the toenails😉
Take care and Happy Weekend 😊
I am always pleased to see how a few repairs make a big difference. Great job as always!!!
Thanks 👍
This is fantastic! I see Dewbacks all the time without gear. I might pick one up.
Cool I was thinking the same to get another one
I actually liked the addition of the painted nails, but if it's not right, it's not right! Nice job as always, and, looking forward to getting this year's annual from Santa!
Thank you very much!
Great job as always...that lego hose worked perfectly, came out really nice...
Thank you! Cheers!
I really love those restorations 🤗 don't think I'll ever get bored of watching them 👍
Thanks, that is great to hear as there are plenty more to come!
That's great news ! ☺
Always love seeing a classic Kenner toy saved! Fantastic!
I had a dewback like that back in the 1970’s when I was very young. It was my first Star Wars toy.
So happy to see this Dew-Back to display worthy quality 😅
Yep that Dewback is one important missing beast in my collection.
Patience Ray.
It come by someday.
Ingenious. Never would have thought to use something like that to fix the reigns. It would be nice to see your attempt at making an entire set of reigns. The mold idea sounds like an interesting avenue to explore. Maybe use some cylicone to form the actual reigns. Not sure what could be used for that. Thats above my pay grade. Thanks for the video Dave.
Another cool repair Dave
Looks fantastic great repair Dave 👍🏻
Thanks 👍
the old dew backs where very advanced compared to the other creatures made by Kenner, like the rancor and wampa.
That’s brilliant mate
Thank you so very much for your videos. Glad I found you!
You are so welcome!
fantastic rein repair!
Many thanks!
I am absolutely doing this to my Dewback's reins soon! My harness is broken in the middle of the curve where the hands go but I'm sure the paperclip trick will work. Interestingly, my Dewback's claws are painted the same color as his belly so I'm wondering if some came that way after all?
I couldn't find any photos of dewbacks with painted claws. And the paint on this one was clearly not factory applied. So I am not sure about yours 🤷
Nice fixes! My Dewback doesn't have the reins with it. I had to touch up the color on it, as the underbelly had paint rubs, but it's otherwise in great condition. Replacement reins go for crazy amounts of money when they show up on eBay, so I think that I may have to fashion my own eventually.
One could wrap a thin thread or string around the LEGO cable to mimic the actual rein ..
Yeah, I was kinda surprised he didn't go that extra bit to replicate it
Great work! If you wanted to be a bit extra, I suppose you could use a bit of epoxy to sculpt some texture to match the reins... or is the lego piece too thick? Excellent job matching the paint colour!
Such a cool toy
That looks GREAT! Even after you said so, I couldn't discern a difference in the painted saddle and the vintage reins, or the paint on the repair either. Love the yellowed Stormtrooper! Looks perfect for the filthy guys on Tatooine! Do you have any intention of making a pauldron for him or a backpack?
Thanks. It ended up looking pretty good. I have videos on making Pauldrons for these guys already.
Beautiful job Dave, well done!👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Excellent work!
Thanks 👍
Amazing video again
Glad you enjoyed it
I probably would have built up some texture to the lego repair section to better match with the original sections
I'm kind of remembering my dew back from the 80s being brownish..not sure if they had different versions but I did buy it that way..protip dont use acetone on 70s or 80s toys guys...lol
How many bottles of Plastic Weld have you gone through in your channel history I wonder. They should hire you as a sponsor!
4 or 5? It goes a long way. And yes, would be great if they sponsored me 😂
Dave, I don't know if you ever created a mold before, but I would have made a duplicate. Then cut from the copy a piece for the reigns .
Nice! What material would you use to create the swatch of the reigns?
@@carlo2384 I watch TheCrafsMan SteadyCraftin and he has an episode/ How to make action figure toys. This gives you instruction on making molds and a range of resins of soft to hard. His channel is very informative. I love Toy Polloi as well also informative about things I love. Being that Dave is very crafty, I think he would be good at creating molds from his existing toys to make repairs. The toy community is vast on UA-cam. A lot of good info and great people here.
@joeselnekovic1280 I've seen it! It's been a while; it's time to revisit...
Great Dave, I suspect you could rattle up a whole set of reigns that way…maybe same process for the Tauntaun? 👍👍
I've been thinking about it!
one question does using the technic pegs from Lego, work for all vintage kenners? ive seen some videos but i don't know if it would work on a cloud car pilot or max Rebo which have some pretty janky joints and even some ones that have fell off due to aging.
I've fixed many vintage star wars figures with lego over the years and never had an issue. There always seems to be a lego part that will fit. Cheers
Oh cool repair I wonder if I could apply hour technique for a vintage tauntaun
Great job as always Dave
I have a question for you where can I ask you my question?
Drop me a line via any of my social media accounts. Cheers
I got lucky and found a Dewback with the saddle for $9.99 at a thrift store
Awesome
😞 I miss mine.
Where can I get the stl. file for the saddle to print?
Link in the video description. Cheers
@@toypolloi Zanks a lot, You are a life saver. I been looking for it all over and could not find it
I always thought that this Dewback always looked a bit too chummy. 🤔😆😆😆
I like his friendly face 😊
Look sir, droids!
Axel
Whoever painted the toenails. If they wanted to be screen accurate, they should have made them black instead of yellow
That Stormtrooper needs a bit of a bleaching.
He is sun kissed like he has spent a lot of time on a desert planet 😎
Soon he won't need an orange pauldron.🙂@@toypolloi
