Brilliant! I am still working through processing this. I'm going to listen to it one more time or maybe more than that. Extremely powerful message here Thank you so much
Yep, Jen, THIS is powerful stuff. Learning by doing is NOT the same as experiential learning. The key is reflection, and without reflection, there is no learning :-) I was just as confronted by this fact when I first heard about it too...
this is a great lesson in clarity and great example. I can relate it to when I was learning to drive standard-5 gears shift. My car kept turning off when I was in first gear. Then, my father helped me reflect on how I was shifting and letting go of the clutch. Once I knew what I was doing wrong repeatedly, I was able to drive. That split second took the reflection in going through the steps and figuring out the cause, not just doing.
An awesome illustration of what I shared Giovanna, thank you for adding a comment. The key in your story and all experiential learning is the reflection. And, as Albert Einstein once said, all learning is experience, the rest is just information.
Its deep, it took a while to get my mind around. I am a marketing guys in Tourism industry, I was actually building something original for my new startup on the lines experiential adventure Tourism. The concept is still in developmental stage, but your video kinda helped me to align some threads in the fabric straight. Thank you for this.
You can't learn anything just by doing, is what you are trying to say? All learning is experiential and doing won't lead to any result unless you do differently next time after reflecting? If I randomly perform different actions not necessarily reflecting on my actions like a cat trapped in a maze performing random actions, like the trial and error method, will it be called learning by doing or experiencial Learning??
Thanks for your comment & question. In the example of the cat performing a series of random acts, then all we have is a lot of doing. No learning and certainly no experiential learning because the element of reflection is missing. If it was possible for the cat to reflect on its random actions in an effort to guide its future behaviour, then yes, it may be possible to call that experiential learning. In order for learning to occur, there must be Reflection > Thinking > Acting > Experiencing. You may enter this cycle at any stage, but the most effective forms of learning move through these four steps.
This is interesting point of view, thanks for this :)
Thanks for your comment. What do you think Diana?

I loved how simple you explain it. Thank you!
