Those DNA tests that are commercial like that, are complete junk. It is proven that they are very ambiguous and non specific and throw up different results for the same person. You can test that by taking three tests with the same company ( if you can be bothered ). They are nothing more than a money making scheme and you have to read the small print disclaimers where they basically say: "these results are just a very rough idea and do not necessarily reflect heritage" or words to that effect. Fact is, the only way to really find your accurate heritage, is via MONTHS of laboratory analysis of your DNA material. Unfortunately, these companies operate within the law - but they are misleading millions of people are like a DNA fashion mafia, taking advantage of the interest people have in the subject. Fact is, their tests throw up wildly different results for the same person. Look into that before promoting rip off junk.

Wow. I like this channel so much. Sweden here. I speak Swedish (native), English, profficient in Danish, Norwegian, German and a little bit of Welsh and Icelandic. If I could choose another language tomorrow when I woke up; I would love to be able to speak Finnish (such a cool language).
@@LilT9180 Yes, Norwegian is like a bridge between the three languages, it shares a lot of the phonetics of Swedish and written Danish is fairly similar. Spoken Danish can be a bit tricky but a lot of words is similar between Norwegian and Danish. You will get the hang of it, I'm sure. 😁

Sign language was an interesting answer. Many family members of mine can't hear (or see) very well because of usher sydrome, and because of that i know some dutch sign language (luckily now technology can actually improve hearing a lot with Cochlear hearing implants, so talking with them is now not really a problem anymore) . Interesting thing is that sign language is also different in different countries, so if you say that you want to learn sign language, then you'd still have to specify for which spoken language you'd want to learn sign language.
As an American I agree it’s pretty disappointing how much of our population can’t even speak another language especially one like Spanish which is widely spoken and relatively easy to learn

I love watching all your videos, but the language question ones are definitely my favorites. If you’re ever here in the South Florida/theMiami area you should make the video. Most of us are at least bilingual & even the monolinguals know enough Spanish to get by. Also, the lady at 9:58 is right in saying Brazilian Portuguese is the most beautiful language. I’m not even Brazilian but I’m learning Portuguese now & agree 100%😂

Have you though about doing this in San Jose (Silicon Valley)? I live near there, and I've interacted with plenty of bilingual / trilingual people. There's a lot of Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Vietnamese. I've also met people who speak less widely-spoken languages, such as Burmese

As a European, people, especially Americans, overestimate Europeans. Most Europeans (outside of the UK and Ireland) speak two languages, their native language plus English. A large part of Spain and France really only speak one as knowledge of English there is poor. Some people with migration background speak 3, the language spoken at home, the language of the country they grew up in, plus English. People being able to speak 3 is already uncommon, but more than 3 languages is really rare. And if that is the case, they often speak some languages that are similar to each other. Like Dutch and German or Spanish and Portuguese. At least from my experience.
The issue with learning languages is that people think that they will learn languages if they study them at schools which is not really true. Myself I spent 10 years at school learning English and French and I couldn't really speak them, then I decided to learn languages on my own and I could learn English, French, Italian and Dutch in about 5 years of learning alone and I could work with all of them in different companies. So if you guys wanna learn a language, do it on your own. Don't wait for someone else or school to teach you. :)
It depends on each one and their circumstances. I learned French at the university and I had no (big) problem talking to people in French in France, Belgium and Canada as well as to francophones travelling or living in other countries.

If someone can find high quality education that really teaches the language then why not but for someone like me who studied his whole life in Egypt, I can confirm the the education quality here sucks that's why everybody here or in similar education conditions gotta study on their own. 😁
I think a big factor is whether you actually want to learn. Similar to yourself I studied French and German at school because it was mandatory, but I had no interest in languages at the time and learnt very little. At age 30 I decided I wanted to learn a new language and studied Norwegian, now I'm studying Swedish (very similar) and Dutch. The difference now is interest and motivation. You can have all the resources in the world, but if you're not interested they're no of use. Congrats on your progress in language learning 👍
@@saeed_aborashed "It's the same the whole world over".🤣 There are several problems learning languages at school, but mainly two. 1) Public schools are more interested in numbers, standars and exam results than in their students' learning, whereas some private schools and academies are more interested in the money they earn. 2) Many students don't really get involved in learning, they just want to pass the exams, reagarding schools, or they think that their teachers are the only ones responsible for their learning and that they do not have to make any effort beyond paying to the academies or schools. When one studies by oneself, there's no way to blame the teacher, just the resources, but even then, oneself has chosen them. I had a good experience learning French at university, but I worked hard during those three years. My experience with English has been completely different: I've been learning mostly on my own for 30 years, though more intermittently than steadily.
looks like the fact that the Mexico and Canada is close to US influences a lot so people in US learn more Spanish and more French. I love how many people from the whole world is just chilling in Boston. p.s: this German guy is so cool, my level of English is not enough to express how cool he is 😎
The spanish is mostly cap, they could never hold a conversation. the bar for "knowing" another language is pretty low in the US. It's just the little they learned from HS French/Spanish.
@@flawyerlawyertv7454 I'm Canadian so I am well aware of our French-speaking province, but you forgot to mention that only 22% of Canadians live in Quebec, which is the only province in Canada where the majority of the population can speak in fluent French. Maybe near the Ontario-Quebec border and some parts of the far-West, there are French speakers, but they are not very many in number. Of the 15 largest cities in Canada by population, only 2 (or 3 if you include Ottawa) have a considerable French-speaking population. Outside of Quebec, it's mostly just English speakers... hearing French being spoken outside of Quebec used to be more common in the past than it is now actually...

A lot of people in Boston speak French because there are many French Canadians here, and Portuguese because of the high number of Brazilians/Portuguese.
Guys let me tell you, if you are from NA and you wanna learn spanish and you're into videogames, you should try finding groups of hispanic people to play with. The only problem is the language barrier, but we latinos are really friendly most of the times lmao.

I speak 4 languages very good but also more . My mother language is Persian . I was grown up in Norway so I speak Norweagian , I learned english in school ,and I live and work in Germany now . I also have been one year in Italy and also had France in school for three years ... NICE isnt it
Wow, I love how so many people can speak two, three, four languages! I always wonder if they are naturally good at learning languages, or if they studied, or perhaps came from a bi-lingual home. Very intriguing.
Usually we learn in school and thats gives you a bit of context and knowledge. Brazil is surrounded by hispanos and we must learn + English of course. Not everyone will get fluency, as this is related to personal interests, goals, etc. but we should all know the basic.
sometimes it's a necessity in some countries , if your native language is not spoken by alot of people or there are several languages in your country , like i live in Belgium the dutch speaking part so we try to learn some french and we learn alot of english from popular culture , the french speaking people in my country feel less the need to learn another language since french is such a big language family

I’m a student of literature and since I can remember I have always been amazed with the fact that out there there are many authors that write about stuff that one could think it’s “common” or not “literature material”. Minimalist circumstances about everyday life, personal life experiencies, childhood memories, jobs that people had to do to get by (I mean, who wouldn’t like to read a story about a boy that used to sell peanuts in a stadium? That’s an increidible type of archeology of a life right there. Also, did you hear what he said? He said he was raised “in the shadow” of the yankee stadium. That’s quite a rare a way to put it. I can imagine a tons of questions to ask him: was it incredibly cold during winter time living there where sun probably didn’t reach his house? Also, where there houses nearby? What was the neighbourhood like at that time?) are also incredibly rich and beautiful to read and hear cause they’re a huge chunk of what we are as individuals. So regarding the type of interview I think I should be somehow that segment of the Bronx guy, which is also beautifully edited I must say. Loved the contrast of the voice in the background with shots of the landscape and city. Often I find myself, in my life, talking of people of different origins and upbringings, some with a lot of money, others with not so much. I have come to realise I get along with mostly everyone, and you seem to be that type of person that people like to share stuff to like it sometimes happens to myself. Maybe you could use that to some extent to make a sort of “archeology” (fancy word, but somehow that’s what it’s) of the lives of everyday people. I’m sure your viewers will enjoy it. Btw, I’m not from America nor Canada. I’m from Argentina actually and I’ve been in contact with English since I was relatively young. That’s why I watch your videos, to keep in contact with the language and also see what people say. Sorry for the long post!
I love seeing those type of videos. If you get the chance please go to my home country Germany. You'll be surprised how diverse we are and how many different languages are spoken. I, myself speak about 5 languages 🙂

I believe the main reason is because he doesn't want to risk getting demonitized due to the fact that posting any content relating to Russia is discouraged by most social platforms, because it likely means losing advertisers who don't want to associate their brand with this country since they're labled as the "bad guys". It's ultimately about money for most people.

The last one actually spoke in Fulani instead of Wolof, as he was supposed to do. I myself speak Fulani as my first language. And I'm fluent in French, English and Wolof, in that order.

Ahh as an American who learnt German, damn I agree with you. It used to be our second language and now it is virtually gone here, you won't really every use it unless you seek out the opportunity to use it. Spanish though, is quite the opposite. 1 out of every 4 or 5 people speak it, so it is everywhere
I’ve always thought German sounds so smooth - I really like the sound of it. Spanish has many accents, even among specific places. :) my personal favorite is the Colombian Spanish accent

Boston has become an "International" City in the last 20 years. Many Brazilian, Haitians and other immigrants live there now. If you had done this video 20+ years ago it would be very different. Boston is now a "Minority Majority" city.

Europeans: “I only speak 14 languages”.
I think it is because they are so close to different countries and travel. In America, we travel the same distance, but it is still America.
As a European, people, especially Americans, overestimate Europeans. Most Europeans (outside of the UK and Ireland) speak two languages, their native language plus English. A large part of Spain and France really only speak one as knowledge of English there is poor. Some people with migration background speak 3, the language spoken at home, the language of the country they grew up in, plus English. People being able to speak 3 is already uncommon, but more than 3 languages is really rare. And if that is the case, they often speak some languages that are similar to each other. Like Dutch and German or Spanish and Portuguese. At least from my experience.
The issue with learning languages is that people think that they will learn languages if they study them at schools which is not really true.
Myself I spent 10 years at school learning English and French and I couldn't really speak them, then I decided to learn languages on my own and I could learn English, French, Italian and Dutch in about 5 years of learning alone and I could work with all of them in different companies.
So if you guys wanna learn a language, do it on your own. Don't wait for someone else or school to teach you. :)
It depends on each one and their circumstances. I learned French at the university and I had no (big) problem talking to people in French in France, Belgium and Canada as well as to francophones travelling or living in other countries.

If someone can find high quality education that really teaches the language then why not but for someone like me who studied his whole life in Egypt, I can confirm the the education quality here sucks that's why everybody here or in similar education conditions gotta study on their own. 😁

I think a big factor is whether you actually want to learn. Similar to yourself I studied French and German at school because it was mandatory, but I had no interest in languages at the time and learnt very little. At age 30 I decided I wanted to learn a new language and studied Norwegian, now I'm studying Swedish (very similar) and Dutch. The difference now is interest and motivation. You can have all the resources in the world, but if you're not interested they're no of use. Congrats on your progress in language learning 👍

There are several problems learning languages at school, but mainly two.
1) Public schools are more interested in numbers, standars and exam results than in their students' learning, whereas some private schools and academies are more interested in the money they earn.
2) Many students don't really get involved in learning, they just want to pass the exams, reagarding schools, or they think that their teachers are the only ones responsible for their learning and that they do not have to make any effort beyond paying to the academies or schools.
When one studies by oneself, there's no way to blame the teacher, just the resources, but even then, oneself has chosen them.
I had a good experience learning French at university, but I worked hard during those three years. My experience with English has been completely different: I've been learning mostly on my own for 30 years, though more intermittently than steadily.

looks like the fact that the Mexico and Canada is close to US influences a lot so people in US learn more Spanish and more French. I love how many people from the whole world is just chilling in Boston. p.s: this German guy is so cool, my level of English is not enough to express how cool he is 😎
The spanish is mostly cap, they could never hold a conversation. the bar for "knowing" another language is pretty low in the US. It's just the little they learned from HS French/Spanish.

@@flawyerlawyertv7454 I'm Canadian so I am well aware of our French-speaking province, but you forgot to mention that only 22% of Canadians live in Quebec, which is the only province in Canada where the majority of the population can speak in fluent French.
Maybe near the Ontario-Quebec border and some parts of the far-West, there are French speakers, but they are not very many in number. Of the 15 largest cities in Canada by population, only 2 (or 3 if you include Ottawa) have a considerable French-speaking population.
Outside of Quebec, it's mostly just English speakers... hearing French being spoken outside of Quebec used to be more common in the past than it is now actually...

A lot of people in Boston speak French because there are many French Canadians here, and Portuguese because of the high number of Brazilians/Portuguese.
I am French Portuguese background and thinking moving from LA to Boston. It seems that Boston will be the right place for me.

Wow, I love how so many people can speak two, three, four languages! I always wonder if they are naturally good at learning languages, or if they studied, or perhaps came from a bi-lingual home. Very intriguing.
I m bilingual because of my parents. I speak arabic, italian, sardinian dialect, and greek. I speak fluent french due to living 18 years in France.
Usually we learn in school and thats gives you a bit of context and knowledge. Brazil is surrounded by hispanos and we must learn + English of course. Not everyone will get fluency, as this is related to personal interests, goals, etc. but we should all know the basic.
sometimes it's a necessity in some countries , if your native language is not spoken by alot of people or there are several languages in your country , like i live in Belgium the dutch speaking part so we try to learn some french and we learn alot of english from popular culture , the french speaking people in my country feel less the need to learn another language since french is such a big language family

Thanks Victor! Moments like that are my favourite. I find the languages question is kind of a gateway to getting people talking, and if they want to share more I will listen. I'm trying to think of other interesting questions I could ask to learn about people's lives. If you have suggestions I'm always open to hear!
@@TheNewTravel Yes, I really liked it because you made a question and then the person went on talking about other stuff. He seemed eager to share about himself. I’m a student of literature and since I can remember I have always been amazed with the fact that out there there are many authors that write about stuff that one could think it’s “common” or not “literature material”. Minimalist circumstances about everyday life, personal life experiencies, childhood memories, jobs that people had to do to get by (I mean, who wouldn’t like to read a story about a boy that used to sell peanuts in a stadium? That’s an increidible type of archeology of a life right there. Also, did you hear what he said? He said he was raised “in the shadow” of the yankee stadium. That’s quite a rare a way to put it. I can imagine a tons of questions to ask him: was it incredibly cold during winter time living there where sun probably didn’t reach his house? Also, where there houses nearby? What was the neighbourhood like at that time?) are also incredibly rich and beautiful to read and hear cause they’re a huge chunk of what we are as individuals. So regarding the type of interview I think I should be somehow that segment of the Bronx guy, which is also beautifully edited I must say. Loved the contrast of the voice in the background with shots of the landscape and city. Often I find myself, in my life, talking of people of different origins and upbringings, some with a lot of money, others with not so much. I have come to realise I get along with mostly everyone, and you seem to be that type of person that people like to share stuff to like it sometimes happens to myself. Maybe you could use that to some extent to make a sort of “archeology” (fancy word, but somehow that’s what it’s) of the lives of everyday people. I’m sure your viewers will enjoy it. Btw, I’m not from America nor Canada. I’m from Argentina actually and I’ve been in contact with English since I was relatively young. That’s why I watch your videos, to keep in contact with the language and also see what people say. Sorry for the long post!

I believe the main reason is because he doesn't want to risk getting demonitized due to the fact that posting any content relating to Russia is discouraged by most social platforms, because it likely means losing advertisers who don't want to associate their brand with this country since they're labled as the "bad guys". It's ultimately about money for most people.

Ahh as an American who learnt German, damn I agree with you. It used to be our second language and now it is virtually gone here, you won't really every use it unless you seek out the opportunity to use it.
Spanish though, is quite the opposite. 1 out of every 4 or 5 people speak it, so it is everywhere
I’ve always thought German sounds so smooth - I really like the sound of it.
Spanish has many accents, even among specific places. :) my personal favorite is the Colombian Spanish accent

Boston has become an "International" City in the last 20 years. Many Brazilian, Haitians and other immigrants live there now. If you had done this video 20+ years ago it would be very different. Boston is now a "Minority Majority" city.
