@Ryan Holiday, I found the Q&A interesting. I have been a member of other communities around a subject or a cause. I have heard your same speech about the need to change up the presentation and attitudes to bring the benefits of the subject to the masses. I have also seen the community around those causes quietly groan and disdain at that idea. How interesting. In my own community I occasionally met people who did not fit the subculture of the community around the subject. They were "mainstream", but open minded enough to get into the subject, and self assured enough to stay with it on their own after meeting the community for that subject and seeing that they didn't fit. For them, thank you for your attitude & work of outreach. They taught me a lesson I can now use, that I can be Stoic on my own apart the the Stoic community. It now looks like I am the open minded outsider. I've seen a bit more pretentiousness, arrogance, and snobbery in the modern Stoic community than I care for. On the positive side, they are not as bad as the modern atheist community. :). In the end, for me, for the community is the question "does it make you happier?". No disrespect to anyone.
Great Talk by an insanely great person. Big fan of your work Ryan. Apparently your favorite qoutes from " Meditations" are my favourite too. Though I am still a long way from getting " obstacle is the way " tattooed on my arm. keep up the great work Ryan.
I feel he does have the tendency to take quotes out of context. "Go straight to the source of intelligence" is not part of a passage on mentorship, but on providence. Marcus reminded himself here of the interconnectedness of all creatures endowed with logos, rather than propose a lifehack.
After the first 3 minutes of lecture I got a bit of dismail because the guy is already talking about businnes. Is there a place in the world where people can talk about meditation, stoicism, and things of this sort without businnes, earning money the last purpose ??!! Jesus !!
I respect Ryan a lot, but every time I hear him talk about Christianity, I think: Wow, have you ever read the New Testament by yourself or do you really think what American religious people told you is the real New Testament Christianity?
His credibility took a huge hit when he got so emotional in his opposition to Trump. Like attacking anyone on Instagram who had an opposing opinion. The fact that he opposed Trump didn't bother me, I never voted for the man myself. His reaction to anyone who dared to think differently from him was very disappointing though. Something for those on here to consider.
Great talk thanks Ryan, however I didn't appreciate the generalization of Christianity. Stoicism and many sects of Christianity have staggering similarities.
Patrick Henry I was going to say this as well. in Christian thought sin is also bad because you harm the entire universe, not just yourself or because it will send you to Hell.
I am certainly not questioning the authenticity and intellectual background of the speaker, neither do the subject which by nature I love stoic philosophy, nonetheless the matter that this lecture is presented, the tone of the voice, the agility that the speaker wants to elaborate his view on the subject are somewhat defective I am afraid. Usually stoic talking is about ethics and it should be spoken in very slow manner, with the camera man very close to the speaker, and obviously showing more character than usually do, the slides are nice but they are still far away from the rest of audience..this can suit a lecture in physics or perhaps Astronomy but certainly not stoic philosophy. Better presentation mode next time, thanks
He must be a good writer because he is not a very good speaker/lecturer. The fact that he calls himself an entrepreneur, and a "creative" makes him seem more like self-help guru, and a marketing guy.
I think it's in accurate to say "self-help guru," he's obviously educated himself a lot on the topic of Stoicism and his books The Obstacle is the Way and Ego is the Enemy are meant to serve as practical applications of Stoicism in everyday life within the modern world. It's no gushy mushy "feel great you can do whatever you want" type of thing at all.
The attack on philosophy based on one data point and an underlying bias has always struck me as very naive and American. Ferriss has the same silly view. Ryan would be so much better if he had some depth of learning. He's read a few philosophy books and now he's giving speeches to large audiences. Amazing.
Hve you seen his reading list? The guy reads somewhere near 250 books a year, what makes you think he's read a "few philosophy books." Another point, he's an author of three books, two of which are great fucking books. Also, what are you talking about large audiences? This isn't a large crowd. You write a book and gain a many fans as he has and you too can give speeches, it's not that far fetched dude
Great talk, even in 2022 🌟
I have probed around for years trying to get some understanding Stoicism but Ryan is the first person I've came across that has helped.
Ryan Holiday how have i only just stumbled across this video this is how great people think
I love this stuff, I wish I discoverd it much sooner
Im Discovering it only now , man. I wish I had come across it way sooner. Even thou Im young ( 22 )
@@davidrobertpires7619 Me too. I'm 49...

And that's the problem of "communities": snobbism. Us, the elite vs the peasants

Great Talk. Thanks!

No one responds and dims the lights. Sweet. The obstacle is the way.
Sounds like an example he'd use haha

Great talk.
excellent and worthwhile
Interesting and informative talk. Enjoyed reading a couple of Ryan's books .... currently daily absorbing the respective days in The Daily Stoic.
I enjoyed this. Thanks.

Fantastic!

He sees himself as Cicero and Trump as Sulla which isn't too extremely far from the truth.
Great content. Well researched book. I like how Ryan has -- basically single handly from what I know -- put Stoicism in vouge.

Does Ryan have an issue with vanity? His intro was not very stoic...
Why not epictites or seneca

He is a phony. Well that what they say.
But still a great guy
In the capitalistic western world the simple answer to your question is: No!
Ryan looks hot in this video! 🔥
الفلسفة حكمة الأغبياء ، ما أجمل حكمة الله في كتاب الله العزيز الحكيم .لا اله الا الله .
I respect Ryan a lot, but every time I hear him talk about Christianity, I think: Wow, have you ever read the New Testament by yourself or do you really think what American religious people told you is the real New Testament Christianity?
Christianity has splintered into hundreds of thousands of branches due to people reading the exact same words and interpreting it different.
From “the 48 laws of power” (suck up to your boss and you will win) to Stoicism, that’s a long arch.
Both topics are about reality and about being a realist is what they have in common

Sounds like a GenX stoic hehe, had to mention a politician.
Thanks Ryan you are doing a great job, enjoy this succes! It enables you to safe money, just to be able to less later };^)
Dr Drew lol. End off video for me.
The guy is just a grifter. Using stoicism just a a business.
Ryan Holiday can not be said to be a practitioner of Stoicism. His career history contradicts his so-called stoic beliefs.
How can you say that, what makes you an expert on Stoicism?
I am certainly not questioning the authenticity and intellectual background of the speaker, neither do the subject which by nature I love stoic philosophy, nonetheless the matter that this lecture is presented, the tone of the voice, the agility that the speaker wants to elaborate his view on the subject are somewhat defective I am afraid. Zana scarlet Read his book “Obstacle is the way”. If you are a thinker, you’ll love the book.
Perhaps you'd enjoy and appreciate it more, Zana if you focused on what you can and cant control

So you're going to tear down a guy for misspeaking? How perfect are you? Jeez.
he did state that he was in marking...

Perhaps you would not make that judgment if you read some of his works. Studying Stoicism has been a great help to me.

Ryan would be so much better if he had some depth of learning. He's read a few philosophy books and now he's giving speeches to large audiences. Amazing.
His content still makes sense. He just tells us in a concise way what great philosophers tried to tell us.

Cole Denny, he may read 1000 books a year, and never grasp them at a deeper level. It's not the quantity of books read that makes a wise person.
It also isn't commenting emptily about another person's work on UA-cam.
SmileBot what a pretentious comment
Don’t like it. Smells shallow. So many technocrats are into gigs like this
