11:31 they need to bring this line back! The Cali Girl line is so iconic & one of my favorite lines Barbie has ever made. If these were in stores I’d buy 2 of each doll. They r so freaking cute the looks r amazing I need these in my collection
The scent of the tropical splash Barbie has always stuck with me -- she smelled so good. I think when I last checked mine a few years ago, she still smelled really good.
I grew up in Puerto Rico close by the beach and would constantly bring toys to the beach and pool. I knew we had a TON of beach Barbies but until this video had no idea my older sister and I had all beach Barbies from 1988 to 2000. Obviously they were not in the best condition by the end since they were played extensively, but I loved them all. I also recall having an Ocean Barbie that came with an orca whale and the Baywatch Barbie that had the porpoise/dolphin.
I think the problem with the Millie face is that its becoming the symbol of everything that's wrong with modern day Barbie. I notice the pattern, that whenever Millie pops up in one of your timelines, the overall quality just plummets. She just encompasses this modern cheap and unimaginative era of Barbie. I think we will be stuck with Millie until Mattel decides to do another massive rebranding of Barbie. Hopefully next time for the better.
I always brought my Palm Beach Barbie swimming with me at the pool. Something about the painted on swimsuit signaled to me that “this doll is for swimming”
thats so cute that the ken and barbie get back together set have them wearing swimsuits that reference their very first releases. like their celebrating when they first came together haha
These historical overviews always bring me back. My sister and I had the Sun Lovin Barbie and Ken with the tan lines! The Sun Lovin Barbie turned into our “Weird Barbie” when we got older. We cut her hair into a short crew cut that stuck up a bit and then we would color her hair over and over with Crayola washable markers to make her look punk rocker 😅
Wet n Wild Barbie was my very first Barbie! I got her on Christmas Day 1989! I got Splash n color Teresa and Ken in 1997. Splash n Color Teresa’s sparkly hair brings back memories of the 90s.
A few weeks ago, I bought one of the beach Ken dolls in Walmart - clearance for $2! - then dyed his swim trunks so they could be shorts for my Rainbow High dolls. Now I have a naked Ken doll and nothing to do with him. Might find an old plastic horse toy and figure out how to merge them into a centaur...:D The Barbie swim dolls with the painted-on suits are the total nadir of Barbies.
Shani also had her own Bathing Suit Line (2-3 Female dolls) (Later becoming the S.I.S. "So In Style" line) and included a male doll named Jamal who's face mold replaced Steven's face in the Barbie line. By your pictures, you can see the different Steven used in 1995 in the 1996 Splash and Color Line then uses the Jamal face mold..
Sun Sensation Barbie (1991) is probably my most beloved childhood Barbie doll. She is SO beautiful to me! I also had the Ken from this line, and he is pretty iconic too with this gold mesh crop top and neon green shorts. My original ones unfortunately are lost to the sands of time, but I missed them so much I actually bought them again. Tropical Splash Kira was another favourite. I had a summer birthday, so i ended up receiving quite a few beach barbies as gifts during the 90s.
Growing up most of my Barbies were hand-me-downs but the 2009 Teresa was my first Barbie that was just mine. She had the weird flat feet and couldn’t wear any of the shoes I had but I loved her so much.
Anyway I thrown away my old classic Barbie's Sparkling Beach last year because all her hands just broke like dust over extreme hot weather, quiet sad and missing her 😅😔
The first "Cali Girl" bathing suit line also had a "suntan lotion scent" fused into the dolls (not pleasant smelling after a while 😞). You were very polite when describing the oversized feet on the female dolls! "Collectors" called them "Sasquatch Feet"! The only "known" shoes produced were the "cowboy boots" in the deluxe doll playsets of the "Cali Girl Line". Collectors were NOT happy as they were forced to purchase "KEN Shoe Accessory Packs" (If available) from prior years to accommodate these "oversized Barbie feet. There were a few pairs of sandals (flip flops style) throughout the deluxe doll packs, but not a suitable replacement for "fashionista doll collectors". After that line concluded, Mattel returned to the original "normal foot size". There was only a one time reappearance (that I can remember) was during the "Fashion Fever Line" There could be more (?), but I did purchase the "Fashion Fever Book Ends" which featured Barbie Sasquatch Feet wearing a pair of thong sandals. Yes, a true pair of larger shoes that actually fit her as the KEN shoes didn't really "do the trick".
I sincerely thank you for your careful consideration of Seol-young's swimsuit history for Bobby so that it's really fun and memorable. Actually, you seem to be well-versed in Bobby's history. I have no choice but to say that it's really great. I want to give you a round of applause.
The sun jewel line will always hold a special place in my heart. My sister had the barbie and I got the skipper and it started my whole skipper obsession at 3 years old lol. As an adult i now how every single skipper with the big eye head mold❤😂
Always looked out for the next Beach Barbie. Every time she had different make-up and hairstyle. They are all unique and well-loved by us collectors. Representing good value, they were just waiting to be removed and re-dressed, as were the Fun to Dress and Dress Me editions. Thank you.
Beach Barbies where the best in the 90s! I had many of them..Tropical splash and miami Barbie where my favorite and of course hula hair Barbie was the Queen of them all 🌺🩷
My favourite Barbie doll, probably of all time, is original Cali Girl Summer. I bought her when I was 10, first one for my own pocket money. Her face is just so pretty and friendly, her wide smile not fake at all. I also like burgundy-brown hair color. I own two dolls of her now, one from childhood and one I bought later, put on mtm body.
🌞🌊🌅My favorite Beach Barbies are my repro-trio set of Malibu Barbie, Christy & P.J., Sunsational Black Ken (rooted hair) & Christy, Sun Gold P.J., Tropical Miko, Cali-Guy Blaine & Steven (rooted hair) -2023 Barbie on the Beach with pink & white striped swimsuit has lots of accessories & the wide brim pink sun hat! 👒
i love the island fun line. Just look at Skipper's hair for a minute Her HAIR ! 😍 and you forgot to mention that on the Wet'nWild / Aqua Magic the swimsuits change colors, i mean, how cool is that ? 🤩
I too have no logical answer for the molded torso on recent Barbies maybe because the dolls are played with in the water so often the design got swiched. There could be more reproductions like the Totally Hair Barbie.
The 80s/90s beach Barbies were the best! I still have my Tropical Miko, Tropical Ken, Tropical Skipper (all were my first Barbies ever), Island Fun Barbie, Beach Blast Teresa, and Wet N Wild Kira from my childhood. I've collected the full Glitter Beach line and hope to collect the Sun Jewel line one day. They were so gimmicky and fun. Their swimsuits were nice too.
Not sure you'll see this comment, but another beach Barbie I remember from the late 80s (released in 1988) was St. Tropez Barbie. She just came by herself in a swimsuit, didn't have any others in the set. Apparently St. Tropez is a beachside resort town in the South of France. I had this Barbie as a kid, and I remember her skin was a few shades darker than all my other Barbies, I think it was meant to show how tanned she was. I too loved the beach barbies as a kid, I had a few from the 80s and 90s. There were also quite a few different playsets released for Hawaiian Fun Barbie, including a pool set, a tiki bar (not called that, lol, it was 'Beach Party'), a boat and a flower shop stand. Not sure why there were so many playsets for that one specific Barbie line, but there you go. I remember those because I had Hawaiian Fun Barbie and some of the playsets. They must not have sold well where I lived, because the only reason my parents could get me so many from that line was because they were all on sale & massively discounted. Playsets were usually expensive.
Thank You Joey!!! I had recently got a 2013 Beach Ken to give away at a show and was suprised to see in your video he was already from an era of printed on bathing suits
I thrifted Beach Blast Barbie along with Tropical Barbie last week, she’s so beautiful. I also found Beach Blast Skipper. I found Pearl Beach Barbie last year and I already had Pearl Beach Ken. I’d like to have Pearl Beach Kira. Now since I found them in yard sales, they don’t have their original clothes on.
My first new Barbies were the Malibu line. My favorite was Francie, but it was always hard to find shoes for her. Prior to that I had hand me down dolls from an older cousin. I wish they still did a lot of fashion packs and different shoe sets.
4:21 All dolls named Kira or Miko in the US were named Marina in Europe... Not a mistake. (While Miko dolls were replaced by Kira dolls in the US, they continued to be Marina in Europe) Tropical Marina was on my wish list when I was little.
Okay, Splash and Color! I found Teresa and Skipper at the thrift store a couple months ago and you just identified them for me. Mi almost bought a Pearl Beach Steven in box, but I can’t with the molded hair usually. I have the Florida suit! Thanks for identifying that too. And Rio Ken’s trunks! I don’t know how to feel about the pattern either. Summer is kind of adorable! Except for the feet/legs. The Mermaid Tale Stevens (??) are so cute. Smiling Ken is kind of cute.
I have the reproduction malibu Barbie i got her. from Walmart, i got for $2.50 the sun loving barbie at a st. Vincent Depaul thrift store with original bathing suit .
Oooh, 1991 Sun Sensation Barbie was my first Barbie. I also had Sun Jewel and Splash N' Colour(Barbie and Ken). also, I know we all hate the painted on swimsuits, but my daughter (who is 4) has one in a purple suit she likes a lot. It's good for bath and beach play. We keep hers at the cottage to play with when we're there. at her age she's just not that interested in the fashion play aspect yet.
My Barbies had a huge pool, it was called the bathtub.
Same but mine was a bit smaller it was the bathroom sink 😂
😂👍
I had no idea that there were so many of them! And those painted-on swim suits are truly dire.
i'd still buy the male dolls from those groups .
Hear, hear!
11:31 they need to bring this line back! The Cali Girl line is so iconic & one of my favorite lines Barbie has ever made. If these were in stores I’d buy 2 of each doll. They r so freaking cute the looks r amazing I need these in my collection
I still have my cali girl barbie from 2004. she always smelled so good
@@minniemin1324 I have the red swimsuit but I couldn’t tell u where the doll is🤣
I love all the 90’s ones! They’re so good. It’s sad to see when they are now in comparison.
The scent of the tropical splash Barbie has always stuck with me -- she smelled so good. I think when I last checked mine a few years ago, she still smelled really good.

Wow, when you hit 1990 I basically had someone from each line until 2002's Rio Barbie! Love your videos! 💖
I used to play with my sister's Tropical Miko and her hair was down to her ankles and so fine and soft! What a lovely doll she was.
These historical overviews always bring me back. My sister and I had the Sun Lovin Barbie and Ken with the tan lines! The Sun Lovin Barbie turned into our
“Weird Barbie” when we got older. We cut her hair into a short crew cut that stuck up a bit and then we would color her hair over and over with Crayola washable markers to make her look punk rocker 😅
I loved the Barbie basics line featuring swimsuits, I don’t know if that qualifies as a beach doll but they were iconic. 👙
1994 tropical splash barbie Is gotta be my most favourite beach themed barbie of all time, hoping to get her myself one day!
Wet n Wild Barbie was my very first Barbie! I got her on Christmas Day 1989! I got Splash n color Teresa and Ken in 1997. Splash n Color Teresa’s sparkly hair brings back memories of the 90s.
100% with you on the early 90s barbies! After years of switching clothes, I'd forgotten that some of my favs were originally those beach dolls.
Omg vintage beach Barbies are amazing ❤
A few weeks ago, I bought one of the beach Ken dolls in Walmart - clearance for $2! - then dyed his swim trunks so they could be shorts for my Rainbow High dolls. Now I have a naked Ken doll and nothing to do with him. Might find an old plastic horse toy and figure out how to merge them into a centaur...:D
The Barbie swim dolls with the painted-on suits are the total nadir of Barbies.
I will give Ken a good home if you get stuck…
Shani also had her own Bathing Suit Line (2-3 Female dolls) (Later becoming the S.I.S. "So In Style" line) and included a male doll named Jamal who's face mold replaced Steven's face in the Barbie line.

The 90,s Barbie and her crew are serving hot! They look so amazing and luxurious. That aesthetics would never happen now, but dang it’s awesome.
Sun Sensation Barbie (1991) is probably my most beloved childhood Barbie doll. She is SO beautiful to me! 17:12 that’s the thing. I liked Millie it’s just…been the same…for a while…a long while. I am sick and tired of it 😭😭
10:48 I think that just simply makes them best suited for the tub
Growing up most of my Barbies were hand-me-downs but the 2009 Teresa was my first Barbie that was just mine. She had the weird flat feet and couldn’t wear any of the shoes I had but I loved her so much.

Yes, a true pair of larger shoes that actually fit her as the KEN shoes didn't really "do the trick".
I loved those the most in the 90s. And their commercials and photos in ads and magazines with the sand and real water and … Glitter! Colors!
4:44, I still have Beach Blast Barbie in my collection.
14:26 ahhhhh I remember these! I had Nikki & Theresa. I don’t have the dolls anymore but I still have the outfits
I’m kind of living for the 6:04 Ken beachwear
I sincerely thank you for your careful consideration of Seol-young's swimsuit history for Bobby so that it's really fun and memorable.
Actually, you seem to be well-versed in Bobby's history.
I have no choice but to say that it's really great.
I want to give you a round of applause.
Out of the 60+ Barbies I had in the 90’s, Sparkle Beach Barbie in the blue bikini was my all-time FAVOURITE Barbie. Hands down.
Love the video beach dolls were always my favourite when i was little
Wet N Wild Barbie, Glitter Beach, Splash N Color, Pearl Beach, Cali Girl and Beach Party (2008) are some of my absolute favorite lines. ❤❤❤
17:54 however over the past years there were different designs for the bath dolls. They weren’t the same
I didn't realize how many of these I had as a kid... The beach barbies were so affordable but good quality in the 80s and 90s
I miss Barbie old bodies.
I had tropical beach Summer growing up. Loved her!
i can’t believe i just searched up “beach barbie” to get some summer outfit inspo and u just posted 😭😭 TYSM

Thank you.
I have all except Steven or Brad and Christie in the Pearl Beach Dolls
You have no idea on how long I’ve been waiting for this video, love the beach 2000’s lines
Fun overview! The Glitter Beach and Tropical Splash dolls brought back so much nostalgia for me, since those were the ones I had growing up...

7:49 Don't you think Barbie should wear black more often?
My favourite Barbie doll, probably of all time, is original Cali Girl Summer. I bought her when I was 10, first one for my own pocket money. Not sure you'll see this comment, but another beach Barbie I remember from the late 80s (released in 1988) was St. Tropez Barbie.
