Of all the props you've covered, this is the most unbelievable thing to have survived for me I think. Just the perishable materials, the size of it, likelihood for abuse, how long it's been! Incredible it's still around.
Tom Spina's preservation work for foam latex props is the best I've ever seen (their Dark Crystal and Labryinth restorations in particular). I'm not surprised that Spina and his studio worked their magic on this TaunTaun.
I've heard that the original Jabba the Hutt is essentially nothing but mechanical framework now because all of the latex has dissolved away. Same for many of those old original latex creatures. :( But of course at the time they weren't thinking to make them durable beyond the filming of the movie, just like some classic old TV shows may never be found simply because the tape they were recorded on was either destroyed or recorded over for other productions.
The irony of the Taun Taun not lasting very long in the cold weather and the fact that it saved Luke's life is pretty amazing. Such a cool piece to have lasted so long, would love to have that hanging on the wall
I have Apple TV and a couple of the screen saver shots (if you're unfamiliar these are slow-mo drone footage of landscapes) are from Norway, and occasionally I can't help opening the Star Wars app on my phone and playing the Tauntaun sounds :)
I think what they were saying that the skull was a re-cast from the original mold, so the horn isn't the real one from the movie. So I think the taun taun could be any of them.
Masterpiece. Totally believable. Heck, _Empire_ was made so well, it wouldn't surprise me if it actually happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away (and another universe).
I like to imagine theres a world where TaunTauns are distant relatives of Luck Dragons from The Neverending Story...there's a bit of family resemblance there...
You can own a piece of history that Adam Savage had his hands all over. Someone restrain him from touching everything. You can see how concerned the guy is with Adam in every clip.
I looked at the auction, I saw "the Feather" from Forest Gump, starting bid is 1,000 British Pounds, no provenance. Most of the stuff was cool, but the feather...if I had a feather pillow I could be a multi-millionaire.
Can we all please acknowledge the low key battle for the pronunciation of ‘Tauntaun’ at the beginning 0:27 and again at the end there 8:29! As a Brit I would like to point out Adam is 100% correct! I think most brits would agree, I have no idea what this guy is even saying 😂
So, the taun-taun isn't native to Hoth (what freezes in a place it comes from?). What would a wampa normally eat? Just waiting around for non-native life forms to show up?
Hello Edit: this felt a bit bland so I decided to mention me and my grandma have been huge fans of yours for a good few years. Thank you for being awesome 👍
That would look amazing up on a wall. I remember many moons ago, I was lucky enough to visit the husband and wife behind a company called 2d 3d Inc, who would later work on Dark City. On his wall, over the doorway into the main bedroom, was the bust of one of the boars from Razorback. Man that tjing was just, must have been at least a meter tall!! Looked impressive as a hunting trophy mounted on a large wooden shield. They also had the giant skeleton from the beach scene from the '95' Power Rangers movie in their lounge room!! Thing must have been around 12+ meters tall!! Their lounge room had a t story tall ceiling, and the thing was sitting on the floorcand it's head was leaning down because it was so tall!! Lost contact with them, or I could have helped out making props for Dark City. ☹
$2k on Etsy for comparable replicas. This is described as a replica made with parts cast from the original mold, it's technically fan art cuz it wasn't part of a production. Might be worth a bit, but it's not an effects model...
I thought the head in the thumbnail was that of Tera Sinube, a Jedi Master from the Clone Wars that Ahsoka Tano had to train with at one point who was incredibly slow. I was pleasantly surprised that it was a Tauntaun. There was a Tera Sinube frozen in an alcove in the Kenobi series, and that is what I thought this was before reading the title.
Adam always puts his hands on or really close to these items. I was laughing at the end of this video as he’s resting his hands on the horns of this piece. 😬snap
I'm sure this will be addressed in an upcoming video, but can anyone tell me what the gloves Adam is looking at in the intro are from. They look so familiar and I can't place them.
Dude if i won the lottery...Tested would have alot of stuff to use for giveaways (or for Adams cave lol) ^ and Id have a starship :D Actually two one being the Ambassador Class and then Id HAVE to find Voyagers model. I know its somewhere I just cant find it lol
For me, having background in architecture, it's very weird that in these props they don't clearly distinguish the heritage, original parts from the newly reconstructed ones. In architectural heritage design it's pretty much an unspoken law, that the new interventions must be clearly distinct from the original parts to make it clear at first glance what is historic and what is contemporary.
It's documented on the Tom Spina Designs website. Under their portfolio, the "movie prop restoration, conservation" page links to before-and-after photos.
Why we never see the whole function of this mask, al the things that Adam shows don’t have any functions , it can be interesting to show the full functions
It almost looks like they made a crying effect on the left eye. Wonder if it's the one that "died" in the snow storm and was cut open to keep Luke warm.🤔
In Empire Strikes Back, why does the TaunTaun freeze to death on a planet it evolved on and should be adapted to? On Earth we have polar bears and elk, moose and even seals as mammals that can survive extreme cold. And Han has his face exposed for the entire sequence.
Possibilities: 1) Tauntauns may be cold-weather creatures brought in by the Rebels from another planet and not adapted to Hoth's conditions; 2) Regardless, most cold weather animals, including polar bears, would likely find or dig for shelter in a severe blizzard.
@@kivimik I had considered that they imported them, but all sources I've read say that it's canon that they were native to Hoth. It is stated that they can only tolerate the cold during the day, and shelter at night, so I suppose that's the answer, but it doesn't explain that Han has an uncovered face and doesn't appear to be dressed very warmly, with the top of his coat open.
Adam, Your treatment of this piece in this video makes me cringe. Resting your hands on was bad enough but the way you were carelessly pulling, swinging on it, an swinging it around looked drunkenly.
They are touching the horns and skull base wich is obviously made with much denser and sturdier material than the delicate facial structure. Plus Adam knows how to handle and care for these things very well No Tauntaun were harmed, I'm sure. 🙂❤️

WAY cool Thanks
Wait there are two major items from the 1981 movie Excalibur, and Adam is not going to talk about them ??

I hope someday the genetic technology reaches a point where we can bring this magnificent species back from extinction!

The whole time the curator is thinking……please stop touching this one of a kind historical Star Wars artifact, Adam!
Finally, the Tauntaun! You've been teasing us for a week!
Tom Spina and his team are wizards. Their passion shines in their work.
This is so cool. Clearly so much time and love went into this
My god these props keep getting more and more legendary.
These are so interesting and relaxing to watch
fantastic piece. i love these films saw them in the cinema back in the day. now im working on my own star wars props.
This is awesome, I always had a love for this animal and the part in the movie. Wow
These videos just get better and better... a TAUNTAUN. 🎉🎉🎉🎉👍👍👍 and so pleased Tom Spina had a hand in the restoration. 👍

That Tauntaun would've been for Luke's close-ups. Luke had the one with the broken horn.

Does anybody know any sources related to the mention of dental acrylic being used in prop making?
This is the first time I really noticed Tauntauns have binocular eyesight. That makes them predators.

i cant wait till ladam gets back and shows us all the stuff he bought
The hard cast is Luke's Tauntaun as it's missing the tip of it's left horn. Han's had two complete horns.
How does the inside smell compared to the outside?
Just WOW!
Where's part 2 or is it 3 of the Razor crest upgrade?

It’s kind of depressing to see how much was missing, from the horns, to the entire top of the head. Though it’s incredible it still exists.

complete with a Luke dummy to carry around

Is it just me or could it be that Adam decided to live in the London prop store from now on XD
Luke's Tauntaun had the left horn broke.
