    Anytime a transmission or portal gear sits on a pin inserted through a shaft, the pin seat in gear is only rounded on one side of the gear. If u look closely on ALL transmission or portal gears the gear "SHOULD" only go on one way but it can be installed either way because it appears as if it doesn't matter which side the pin sit's on, that's why we're seeing/hearing random videos of clicking SCX10III Jeeps & SCX10II UMG10's with various degrees of clicking depending how many transmission or portal gears are sitting on pins incorrectly!
    The transmission or portal gear shaft pin seats are only rounded on one side of every gear that sits on a pin inserted through a shaft, if it's the wrong side it's like adding 2 or 3 shims & will create binding &/or make gears hit covers causing the clicking. Some have just been lucky cuz it's a 50/50 chance of getting each gear seated on their pins correctly!
    Axial should make this clear in the instructions, luckily I saw a few other videos before I built my SCX10III Jeep. Now I need to go tear apart my UMG10 transmission cuz I didn't know this when I built that & even following the "revision" & using proper revised gear case in the UMG10 manual, it still was clicking & felt bound up.

    • @Jrod_FPV
      @Jrod_FPV 4 роки тому

      Exocaged said he installed his in the correct orientation and still had significant clicking. I believe I also watched an interview with one of the Axial designers admitting there was an incorrect tolerance on the transmission gears and that is the root cause of the clicking. And that putting the gear in backwards emphasised the issue.

    I love having the 2 speed in a trail truck. If I run into a spot where I need more wheel speed, 2nd gear is there...mud, hill climbs stuff like that. I just like having the option.

    As someone that owns a trx4, I love the two speed transmission. I don't use it a huge amount, but when I need it (ascending snowy/slick slopes, etc), it comes into its own.

    excellent job and thanks for the free info as I just ordered this gear set to install in my 10III as I build it the first time and yes a two speed trans geared correctly is a must, 1St gear should be dead slow and 2nd should be about walking speed, my full size 2020 JLU Rubicon has low gear to creep over obstacles and not to get to the mall faster! if we are going to play tiny trucks correctly it should have low low 1st gear and scale 2nd gear, those that run only one gear aren't playing scale tiny trucks correctly and should only be allowed to drive to the mall.

      I wish trax-ass would make different ratios for the 2 speed. I’d go with the stock 64:1 low and a 20:1 high. But I’m living in between running a 13t pinion.

    Hi, first of all thank you for the great content. I am completely new to the RC crawler world and your videos have been a great source of information and inspiration. In fact, i am in the process of building an SCX10.3 as my first truck. Second, i apologize for the length of this post. From my point of view, the 2 speed transmission makes perfect sense for this vehicle. I understand that for a hardcore crawler fan having, the latest and greatest in your truck is a no-brainer and that spending over 200$ on a high power brush-less system is not a problem. However, from my perspective its just too much. I have ordered a 20$ crawlmaster motor that should be butter smooth at low speed and provide an appropriate top speed for this truck in second gear. It seems to me that you are spending a lot of money for the fast brush-less system, spending more money to slow it down and ending up with the same speeds that an inexpensive brushed motor provides. Am i missing something? Is brush-less simply overkill for this type of rc? Finally, the two speed transmission is one of the elements that take this kit closer to a 1:1 vehicle and that is appealing to me.

    • @scalebuildersguild
      @scalebuildersguild  4 роки тому

      Thanks for the comment, but yes, you are missing something. I'm gaining additional reduction, and therefore not taxing the motor but adding the gearing. It's not an expensive change, and well worth it in my opinion. Using your less expensive brushed system would still benefit from it. Brushless is NEVER overkill in my opinion.

    Hey bud searching for an option to help what I thought was the lowest way to go... swap to a 11tooth pinion. I did this and it is really loud at half to full throttle. I put a 17tooth in and it's all nice and quiet and smooth but to fast. Can I go back to 11tooth and change another gear to mesh better. Please help me out I don't like this thing to race I really only want to slow crawl. With 3slipo and a 1800kv fusion set up it's still faster than I want with with 11 tooth.( I keep the remote set at 75 percent.)

    Something interesting to note, and you can see this born out in data logs, is that you’re not really getting any more torque at the wheel when you’re gearing down. The motor simply draws less amps lol. It’s easier for the motor and makes crawling smoother, but unless your driveline is bound down it will just rev high and do nothing.

    Matt. First issue that I have with my SCX10-III are the lengths of the shock springs. The kit comes with 13mm x 62mm long springs (green & red). With these, I have the front and rear adjustment collars all the way up on my rig; but, still want to lower the overall height of the III if that was possible. Researching shorter springs and/or lower spring perches.
    Second issue is that the right front wheels lifts too easily and unloads on steep climbs. Feel that the kit should have come with stiffer springs at the rear to help control that issue.
    Bottom line...I am hoping to find something like 13mm x 55mm springs with about a 2 lbs/inch rate. Or, will try other shock/spring assemblies.
    FYI...I am running the new Proline Jeep JL body (210 grams painted) for better performance than what the kit body allows (500 grams?). Fits pretty well.

    Most of the places I use a crawler have a lot of flat sections that it's nice to have a 2 speed for. I can flip a switch, blast through those to the more fun sections. They are mostly a straight shot, so unlocking diffs is pointless for me. I am not happy with the way the SCX10-3 2 speed is however. The ratios are so close that it seems pointless. The TRX4 is better in that respect, however I like the SCX10-3 more.

    Mmmmmm I don’t know about the 2speed... too many moving parts and it’s just extra weight, but the dig on the other hand is a different story, I feel like the dig is an essential part of crawling and should still be able to work during this pandemic 😂

    You mentioned that gear reduction from the portals is why the manual lists the 1:1... My question is: Do you intend to further reduce the gearing ratio AND keep the portals, or do you plan on switching to regular shafts when they are released? Thank you very much for your videos and insight!

    • @scalebuildersguild
      @scalebuildersguild  4 роки тому

      I have the portals installed, so there's no way to get further reduction, at the highest, you can get 98:1 reduction. Once you lose the reduction at the portal, expect it to be closer to 60-ish FDR.

    Yes I love having 2 speeds! In our area you need wheel speed just as bad as slow control! When your on loose terrain slow just spins and slides down hills gotta pop in into second and power up! Plus it’s fun to bash a bit and get a little air! I think it is a shame they made a 2 speed with wry little difference in speed from 1st to 2nd gear! Because of that I’m seriously considering a trx4 over the scx10.3! Pretty bad when a scx10.2 can probably out do the new scx10.3 in cog and over all climbing!
    Going off what I’ve seen of it so far.
    Also gotta keep in mind sensored brushless systems are really expensive! So not everyone can afford to just slap a brushless on there crawlers. 😔

    • @scalebuildersguild
      @scalebuildersguild  4 роки тому +1

      Almost no difference is a bit of an exaggeration. There’s at least 5mph difference!

    • @TJthercGuy
      @TJthercGuy 4 роки тому

      Scale Builder's Guild True edited to very little difference. All I mean is the 2 speed trx4 and 2 speed tf2 are both faster and slower out of the box seems. 🤔
      I’m considering a new crawler but kinda torn between scx10.3 and the trx4. So far the trans gearing seems better on the trx4 ? I already have a scx10.2 also. So what’s your opinion? Is anyway you could compare the 2 like nine stock with the same motors and battery? Haven’t seen it done yet. 😅

    This makes me want to get the truck more now and use a different body.. Not a JK fan.. I like the 2 speed for getting to crawl spots. Id like to see the 2nd gear now tuned for speed so there's even more of a speed difference.

    I'm no expert that's for sure, but I'm still gonna give my opinion! I have the Capra, and the SCX10iii (also SCX10ii UMG & TRX4), both are using Hobbywing Axe 540 1800Kv systems (Castle is very expensive and hard to get in UK at the moment), on 3s with stock pinions, both are good at crawling, and seem to have loads of power down low, and good wheel speed. Rather than using a high Kv motor (2850Kv) and gearing down why not use a lower Kv motor (1900Kv)?
    Anyway the two speed on the SCX10iii does seem a little pointless, and at low speed its hard to tell which gear you are in as they are very close, perhaps they could have made the lower gear a little lower and the high gear a little higher.
    What I would really like is for one of the manufacturers to make quieter or silent transmissions, I guess it would involve helical gears which would be expensive and complicated to make and implement. My UMG10 is too loud!

    • @scalebuildersguild
      @scalebuildersguild  4 роки тому

      The idea here is to add reduction, not just less KV. I keep all the torque, and in fact, actually increase it be reducing the gearing. Just putting a slower motor in won't garner the same results.

    • @multirotorfpvuk
      @multirotorfpvuk 4 роки тому

      Thanks for the explanation, perhaps you could make a head to head video, to show the results of high Kv with low gearing Vs Lower Kv with higher gearing, would love to see the results, anyway I enjoy watching your videos, thanks and stay safe!

    this was a very helpful video. I have ordered my SCX10iii and should have it by May. With this being my first kit I going to do both the dig and 2 speed. But I have a feeling I will be ditching the 2 speed after a few runs since there is no need for the speed but wanted to see if it would work for the purpose of driving it to the location I am crawling at.. since I am lazy and do not want to carry it. The gear ration file is very helpful and thank you for sharing that. Is all this with it still being with the portal still in it and not a straight axle?

    • @scalebuildersguild
      @scalebuildersguild  4 роки тому +1

      These ratios will work for portals or straight axles, whenever they come out. But yes, the calculations I'm showing still have the portals.

    • @Suicide7Shift
      @Suicide7Shift 4 роки тому

      Yes the portal gear ratios are in the spread sheet. If in the future one decides to go with straight axles, (no portals) just adjust the numbers for the portal gears to 1 and 1 respectively. This will null out that calculation. This is the same as what I list as the "transfer case" gears at 27 and 27 respectively. This is 1:1 so the gear ratio for the spreadsheet does not change unless you update the "New Value" column with the new Transfer Case gear numbers. I hope that did not confuse things.

    Do you think 2 speed would be cool on a basher? Like you could have first gear for general bashing at 50mph and then 60 or 70 mph in second gear for shorter speed runs or places where you want more speed like if you want to hit a jump at 70mph.

    • @scalebuildersguild
      @scalebuildersguild  4 роки тому

      No, too many moving parts for a basher. Keep it simple.

      Scale Builder's Guild yeah you’re right. Cool thought though. Hitting a jump at 70mph. I guess it is easy enough just to swap out the pinion gear for a bigger one on these arrma’s. Love your channel btw. Kinda what helped me in to the crawling side of things

    • @scalebuildersguild

      I'd start by reducing the pinion size and increasing the spur.

    • @Suicide7Shift
      @Suicide7Shift 4 роки тому

      That is a LOT of motor for these trucks. I would consider getting a lower KV motor if you cannot get your speed to where you like it. I also have a sheet for the SCX10II as I own one of those as well. drive.google.com/file/d/1AJKqNaYa0rMnErDJQw89WmFJ0Nm68P_l/view?usp=sharing
      Put in your numbers for the gears, battery, Kv, and tire size. This way you can see what your top speed is now and how much you can slow it down with available gear changes.
