I am just amazed at the number of people that are buying into this. The people that would buy something like this are the same kind of people that would get a cute puppy or kitten and then send it to the pound when it grows up and isn't as cute anymore.
Keeping bees is not as simple and putting up a hive and turning a valve to get the honey. How many people gushing all over this idea know what the process is to get bees? How many of them know what it takes to get bees from the box they come in, into the hive? How many of them know how much maintenance is necessary INSIDE the hive on a continual basis? How many of them know what "propolize" means and what it does to the frames inside the hive?
The people that believe that it will so simple to hold their pancakes under the spout to drizzle honey all over them, have absolutely no clue as to what it takes to maintain a healthy, vibrant hive. And anyone that believes it will be this easy deserves to be separated from their money. A fool and his money are soon parted.
Innovation is always scoffed at when things have been done for a long time.
Well said:):), I can't agree more.
I think you qualify as a fool if you aren't opened minded to new ways (excluding morality). It might be a little narrow-minded to think that everyone purchasing this invention is completely naive to beekeeping requirements, don't you think Dave?
While it's true people may walk away with a simplified view and should be educated on the complexities you describe, this does not discredit the invention itself. I think it's a fantastic achievement and could make bee-keeping a lot more accessible to the masses.
tagi3d
I agree with you as far as the innovation is concerned, it's clever & all that, the crowd funding will certainly be great for them. However the masses need to get their hives to the point where the hives starts producing honey & that's where the challenges lie. Then the brood, the most important part of the hive needs to be maintained, then there's SHB, AFB, EFB, CCD, Veroa, Nosema, Chalk Brood, Swarming. All these things have to be taken into consideration. It's probably important that anyone considering taking on a beehive do a beekeeping course to learn how to properly maintain their hive & how to overcome the myriad of challenges they'll face. Not for the masses.
The bees "what keeps happening to all the ******* honey?!"
hi Anthony, the bees produce more than they need. The harvesting process is very gentle and once the bees figure out that the honey is gone they start recapping and filling the cells again - clever bees! - Sam

What does it matter if its such a good thing.
Okay, But, What about those bees, which are putting their heads into the cell, Right in that time, when the owner turns that stick , and smashes their head into Half ??
@bustjanzupan1074 i think that they wait until the bees closes on the honey then they open it
@@bustjanzupan1074is not that the traditional way is any harmless 😂
@@Norkwey welll, there at the traditional way a man can mostly see the bees, but inside this "automatiic hive" you can't see them if they are sticking their heads into the cell. But, there is still a solution also 4 this system. I have studyed it with my earthly father 2 years ago.
Fantastic idea, but as a member of a Beekeeping Society we've been inundated with people completey sold into this without thinking they have to actually manage the bees. People are buying these as a new gadget for the garden that they think magically produce honey without any understanding of actual bee management.
I blame the ignorance of the consumer, not the brilliance of the inventor.
If you know bees, you should know better; they require deliberate care. If you buy one of these out of ignorance, that's a symptom of a larger more personal dilemma.
There is a beekeeping society? What the hell is that for?
@@lealvazquezosvaldo8431 I'd reckon it's a society for beekeeping? Pretty self-explanatory if you think about it.
EA sports - It's in the name.
I had the same thought, people are thinking the wrong way, also no queen no bee's no honey.
wait a minute... wasn't it completely automatic? lol. It looked like it. anyway, this idea is so great, it only needs the right person to market it. someone like me.
It's four years later; did this work? Anyone?
Apparently it's been produced, but the result is mixed, there are some reports of some bee colonies not wanting to use the flow hives, but some others say it's working pretty well when it works. However some are concerned about the design of these.
For one thing, the beeswax is for one another component you usually expect in beekeeping, and filters out impurities of the honey, whereas with the flow hives, you don't get any wax, the honey isn't getting naturally filtered and there are some concerns about the plastic even contaminating the honey through natural degradation.
Also some experts feel like this encourages the wrong idea. Bee hives aren't natural barrels of honey that you should always drain, the bees store this honey for rough times, and having an easy way of accessing honey could encourage people to get all the honey they can get, which could cause the downfall of the hive later down the line as it starves to death. Many beekeepers see beekeeping as a hobby with a little bit of side product, whereas this product seems to reflect the opposite, which again, could trick people into getting into beekeeping with the wrong ideas, which again, could cause the downfall of their colonies.
So overall, it's a product that works well, but could actually harm the beekeepers in the long run as it encourages greedy behavior and doesn't reflect the patience one has to have to properly care for a bee colony.
@@ToothedKrux Thank you for the through reply! I was watching and thought the marketing material looked a bit too good to be true. Now that you've explained it, I can see how it can go wrong. Hard to argue with time tested methods and ideas. Thanks again and have a great day!
There's lots of varieties of off brands and similar products. There's even closed windowless boxes of bees inside grocery stores now, which is cruel.
Joshua Eilebrecht you forgot to mention that it costs 700 dollars which is three times the price of a regular bee hive, it has a risk of clogging and comes disassembled and not painted, just raw cut wood.
@@ToothedKrux Nice explanation. I always thought that despite mixed reviews, it seemed to do a good job at promoting discussion on bees, or at least getting people interested, at least for me.
The issue I can see here is that you can’t see the comb to know when it’s been capped off. This means you are guaranteed to get unready watery honey in each “harvest” and you’ll have to pasteurise if you don’t want to get sick. Not for me, I like my honey uncooked or I would just buy it in jars
Hi Abbas, you can see when the honey is capped through the window in the super but we also recommend doing an inspection before the first couple of harvests to make sure that you know what you are seeing in the window, - Sam
Guys awesome work and attitude towards the nature. World needs a people like you so desperately. Love you 👌🏻
Thank you Viktor :) - leah
why don't you just us a 3D printer to print the majority of the polymer parts? that would cut down on costs, and let anyone produce most of the parts.
3D printers are good for prototyping or making a limited production, but for mass manufacturing in the thousands not so much.
right, but this isn't for mass production. this is for a homeowner who wants to start bee keeping.
David Ball
Think outside of the bee hive David.
Most 3D printed parts are not all that strong or long lasting. I know 3D printing is the fad of the day even though its been around some 30 years. People will figure out its not a manufacturing panacea. Besides why the H would they want to give it away? They have ten years of research and work in this thing. I suppose you are one of those people who go to work every day and turn down getting paid for it. Yea I bet not, and these guys should get paid for their work the same as you should.

Went to a flow hive demo today - first honey harvest. It actually worked EXACTLY as advertised. Very close to, if not the best, honey I've tasted. Great stuff - everyone (including the owner) was really pleased. And it was great of the owner to invite a few of us around to have a look.

It is not serious, it is just very beautiful toy to make impression on your friends but not practical, beekeeping is not only extracting honey but also organizing bees work according to the calendar and weather and so many other things...
According to calendar and weather? What do you mean?
Your bees behave differently depending on the time of year via laying cycle and what activities they do, and as a be keeper you need to manage them and better prepare their hive so the can function year round. Bees deal with pests and diseases and a good bee keeper should be inspecting and maintaining a hive every 7-10 days. The Flow hive just encourages lazy beekeeping and leaves little for the bees.
@@christianotis5918 thanks, it was jus what I wanted to say. Beekeeping is not a game for lazy people, but hard everyday work, especially when you have more than 20 hives.

When the cells are shifted/opened, doesn't that crush the bee larva that are in some of the cells?
+Michal Gloc usually there are no larves in the honey box because the queen can´t get there
But there are bees don't theye get caught?
+Abdallah Chaalan Even if some did its still much much better than traditional bee keeping!
bee larva would not bee in the super....only queens lay larva in the bottom. So it won't effect the honey we get.
+Marty White - Wrong, from a guy who grew up in a beekeeping family. The queen will usually begin laying eggs in the center frames and work toward the sides if there is available brood space in the outer frames (not full of honey). The way to keep the brood out of the suppers is to confine the queen to lower levels with a queen excluder which is a screen device that the queen is too large to pass through. The frame with shifting cells would not be appropriate where brood is going to be accommodated.
This video inspired me to donate to the campaign all those years ago. Very cool to see it such a success now.

***** You forgot the full stop.
Another good method is the "bottle to bottle hive" by Advoco makes
Essencially bees would be placed in 2 big bottles (like the ones for water dispensers) or custom plastic tubes.
Bees naturally fill up the top one first, eventually blocking it completely, leaving it ready and safe for harvest. Then u add a new empty segment on the bottom and cycle continues
Thanks for sharing!

bees can live in temperatures above 40°c / 45 c .in this hive ?
Hi +scorpi0nx,
The Flow Hive is the same as a traditional hive when it comes to extreme temperatures. A great place to discuss this topic is our forum - forum.honeyflow.com/
+scorpi0nx
The bees will keep the hive at 35°C through either ventilation or muscle contractions no matter what hive
+FlowHive what happens in winter
+Jonathan Pittman The suggestion is that you provide the bees with a sugar concentrate so that they maintain their energy levels in extreme conditions. The same commercial suppliers that provide bulk bees also provide that.
yes and no. hehe if a bee reaches 40 c it dies. but when it get hot the bees make a natural aircondition using their wings and the cooling effect of the wind they make over the wet wax wall in the hive.
almost same principle as the first refrigerators::: if you put a wet towel around say a box of coke and lay that in the sun, the outside of the towel get hotter but the evaporating water make the coke box colder than the air.
in the wintertime they doo the same but then they protect the queen to make heat for her

Hi Ben, the larvae will be below the queen excluder in the brood box below. I only heard of this system on the radio this morning. This all sounds good & impressive but it looks like just another gimmick.
Hi Ben, it just occurred to me that sometimes the queen will find a gap in the queen excluder & finish up in the honey super & start laying up there, with this system that could be problematic.

I bought a property that came with 4 hives. The previous owner said he would coach us on taking care of them, but then was not available. The last year has been very stressful for both my wife and I, and the bees. With us not knowing how to do anything, and me not wanting to stress the bees out, or "steal" their honey.
Ultimately - three hives left (probably to the conglomeration of boxes owned by someone else on the other side of the pond.) But with the hive that stayed - I don't want to mess with them and stress them out (they were very passive before, but now they really don't like it when I get close to their box).
And I don't want to myself or them to feel like I've "stolen" the fruits of their hard work. I want us to have a symbiotic relationship. I will provide them with all the flowers and whatever else they need. And in return, maybe my wife and I can have just enough honey for us... (And I REALLY don't want to get attacked when I am just trying to mow my own lawn!)
So yes... "My" new bees and I have had a bit of a strained relationship because of all of the chaos of both myself not knowing what to do and having no one to coach me -- and also the fact that the traditional method of "bee keeping" is just very violent.
Strangely enough -- even though I've been aware of Flow Hive even before buying the property - I never took the time to realize that it seemingly solves all of our problems - both the bees' and mine. (I just thought it was a new, fancy, and more expensive way of doing things... SO glad I took the time to watch some videos to find out that I was completely wrong!)
Now I just need to find the video on how to transfer a hive from a traditional box, to a Flow Hive box... Then I'm in 100%
Hi there, There are a few different ways to transfer a hive to a Flow hive depending on what type of hives you have. Email us at info@honeyflow.com so we can help you out.
Pls correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't the larvae die using this method of getting the honey since the queen bee lays the eggs within those cells? I don't know anything about bees btw
The queen is excluded in the bottom cage
There is a grid that is just the right size to keep the queen from leaving, but allows the worker bees to move.
So you have the queen and the eggs in the bottom and just honey in the top
but.. what if..one day the bees realizes what's happening😶

It's really nice ☺
But expensive 😫
I am a bee worker by the way
I always have been thinking about making similar invention before
The thing that made the idea difficult is how to collect honey from each tiny hole , clearly connecting pipes to each hole is un acceptable, too many pipes not practical
But you guys with this awesome genius way of splitting the holes with single key twist is really amazing 👏 👌
I wonder where did u get this inspiration from ?!
Thank you for your support, Cedar and Stu trialled many different designs, they even tried popping out each cell. -Kieran
holy shit youre an idiot
Amazing , so friendly to bees .moreover ,it’s cheatingly effective.
its gonna only create greedy behavior. The bees will only be exploited, instead of the regular messy way that makes the process more patient and drag-full, people will be squeezing bees to death with no remorse. not a sustainable way, just an easy way for exploitation.
a magiever guy or someone who is smart made it so much easier for all these other bee guys who where doing it the hard way probably because thwy were set on old ways and never tried to think of better more easier ways. most people are just not that smart
Really coooool, my father work for bee keeping for more than 30years, I will recommend to use the new beehives?really conventient.
I would love to have that product in my backyard it is extremely awesome
I Loooove the bee's ,one of my favorite insects , I totally want one of those hives!!! 😋
how does flow hive solve the problem of not seeing if all the hives are capped before releasing the honey? the high water content before the bees fan the honey and cap the cell will lead to the honey spoiling. so as a beekeeper it still seems like the hive has to be disturbed to inspect each frame. no brood in honey, and all cells capped. please respond. Regards
+Aldean Louis Hey Aldean, we do recommend that beekeepers still examine the Flow super to get to know what it looks like on the end view when it is fully capped. After a while you will begin to recognize what it looks like when the frames are capped on the end viewing window where you extract the frames.
This is amazing! This is inspiring! This farming tool can take its place next to the great tractor. I DON'T SEE WHY ANY BEE FARMER WOULDN'T WANT TO INVEST IN A FEW OF THESE.
Question, have you considered making the openings big enough for the bees but too small for the Giant Asian Hornet?
Hi there, we have just released our new Flow Hive 2+ with an entrance reducer which will hopefully solve this issue. :) - Sam
Waiting for the delivery of my first Flow Hive two 7. Can't wait :)
Can you let me know... how to order it...and price?
Hello sir I'm from Nepal. I want same instrument so how can I get such as amazing tool plz inform me
Pay a lot of money. Or let me come live with bees. I will harvest the honey lol
How much will cost for 1 hive
You can find our full range of products, visiting the link the description. -Kieran
A true win win!! Thank you bees!!
its not a win win look it up
Barklythedog _ Yes I have since read on the effects of the plastic honeycombs and such, but perhaps this can still be modified in ways! After all, if it is causing problems they will have to address it because it is the main reason this was invented, to make it less evasive! And making it more available seems to be helping increase bee population and is expensive and for certain areas so not something tons of people can get their hands on! Also, the plastic issue is debatable as to whether it actually hearts them or not!
ohh, so redstone.
😐
what about the wax capping the holes??
*Bee produce honey
Man: It's a free real estate.
It’s pretty expensive real estate 😂 Shelling out 200 quid for a hive, then all the money for the suit and a spare suit, then the equipment for the hive like the hive tool and the smoker and then all the extraction equipment if you’re going to jar it instead of just taking cut comb, then a second hive for when the first inevitably swarms you could be going into the thousands very easily
You guys are the Elon Musk of the beekeeping industry. All the best to you.
My father is keeping honey bee since 1980s. Now I wanna export honey to west . That's my goal
I hope they put a put a patent on this with no loop holes cause honey is like gold
Hi Timothy, it is a patented design :) Thanks for caring about Flow Hive- Sam
