Lyrics below:
Why do I have to fly
Over every town up and down the line?
I′ll die in the clouds above
And you, that I defend, I do not love
I wake up, it's a bad dream
No one on my side
I was fighting
But I just feel too tired to be fighting
Guess I′m not the fighting kind
Where will I meet my fate?
Baby, I'm a man, I was born to hate
And when will I meet my end?
In a better time you could be my friend
I wake up, it's a bad dream
No one on my side
I was fighting
But I just feel too tired to be fighting
Guess I′m not the fighting kind
Wouldn′t mind it
If you were by my side
But you're long gone
Yeah, you′re long gone now
Yeah
Where do we go?
I don't even know
My strange old face
And I′m thinking about those days
And I'm thinking about those days
I wake up, it′s a bad dream
No one on my side
I was fighting
But I just feel too tired to be fighting
Guess I'm not the fighting kind
Wouldn't mind it
If you were by my side?
But you′re long gone
Yeah, you′re long gone now
Yeah

Most people would go with "Somewhere Only We Know" or "Everybody's Changing", but I think this is their absolute best song.
They got a lot songs like that! Bedshaped is probably mine.
el no tiene una cancion absoluta. para mi todas son hermosamente maravillosas .
'Nothing in my way' is also good too, i suppose.
Yes, i agree with you.
I'd go with "Leaving so Soon"... one of the bests.
This man has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard
Agreed
I completely agree with JB! So plaintive, and sincere sounding
Tru dat.

@@skunkrat01 agreed. He's very good looking. That's coming from a man.
This is an absolute classic.
"In a better time, you could be my friend". Wow. That line floors me.
Very deep
2022 and still listening to this fabulous song. A timeless masterpiece.
Absolute masterpiece.

Yes it is
Completely agree. A great piece of musical genius
This is the kind of song you listen to when you feel broken to the core.
It won't heal you but you'll listen to it anyway.

Magnificently said.
Who ate your heart? You're cold inside.

After 7 years struggling with depression, this song still makes me feel understood and less lonely, thank you Keane, your music saves me everytime.
wow that's incredible
I've been struggling depression since 2015 till now oh God shit
I suffer from panic attacks and anxiety. Your not the only one ❤️
You are welcome
Just stumbled on this song recently and I honestly can't get it out of my head. It helps to explain the depression I have to repress right now.
Hi Marian,I've suffered depression for 15 years .You never alone love ,I hope you pull througb
When I was 17, one day I came home and saw my dad crying. He told us that he has been addicted to alcohol and he sold our house due to financial problems because of the addiction. I had to leave most of my things there and so all my childhood memories. My parents divorced and my brother had serious problems with depressions and alcohol addiction, too. Today, I am 10 years older and still remember that when it was the worst, I used to listen to "A bad dream" hoping, that is is just a bad dream.
Wow thanks, I relate to your story. So you give me hope.
This song helped me through a really difficult time, and I’m kind of comforted by reading that it helped someone else this way. And yes, many thanks to Keane for this gem.
Aw xxx its a very emotional song. xxx
I was working at Camp America in North Carolina in 2007 & my co counsellor got run over by a speed boat & died in front of a group of 6 year old kids. It was awful. This song got my through it x
Wow ! Thanks for sharing this privacy. As a former french prime minister said, "Good things make times to come". We all have our bad experiences of life and familie's struggles, which become with time bad dreams. 15 years ago, I was working with shifted hours and didn't have possibility to change easily of work, missing my children growing. Thanks to my wife and to the Creator, I succeded to change the situation and rebalance our family's life. In this period, I was listening to this album. This song was one of my favorite...
Before a concert, Tom explained what this song means.
It's about a soldier going to war. In fact, a lot of the album is about disillusionment with the ways of the world and all the current events (war, etc.) But I love how the lyrics are vague so most people end up spinning it to be about failed relationships and other sad themes....let's break it down and it'll all make sense.
Why do I have to fly? (GOING TO WAR)
Over every town up and down the line?
I'll die in the clouds above
And you that I defend, I had do not love (NOT NECESSARILY CARING ABOUT THOSE YOU'RE FIGHTING FOR, MOST ARE STRANGERS ANYWAY)
I wake up, it's a bad dream
No one on my side (IT'S WAR)
I was fighting
But I just feel too tired
To be fighting
Guess I'm not the fighting kind
Where will I meet my fate? (FEAR DEATH)
Baby I'm a man, I was born to hate
And when will I meet my end?
In a better time you could be my friend (ABOUT THE ENEMY, HE DOESN'T REALLY "HATE" HIM BUT IT'S WAR SO YOU HAVE TO KILL; IN ANY OTHER CIRCUMSTANCE THE ENEMY COULD HAVE BEEN SOME PERSON YOU BEFRIENDED)
Where do we go? (POINTLESSNESS OF WAR)
I don't even know
My strange old face (FIGHTING AND TIME HAS AGED THIS SOLDIER)
And I'm thinking about those days (BEFORE HE HAD TO FIGHT, BEFORE HE WENT TO WAR, FRIENDS, FAMILIES, ETC)
And I'm thinking about those days
bravo!! maravillosa interpretación.
This should be top comment so people understand this masterpiece of a song. Beautifully explained. Thank you ❤️
It's actually about an Irish man in the British army. 'Those who I defend (The Brits) I do not love.'
It’s actually an adaption of a famous poetry, “The Irishman”
Now I have read your comment, I love this song more
Based on the poem "An Irish Airmen Foresees his death"
Beautiful poem, beautiful song.
Context is always important with art in a musical form, thanks for enlightening us

Thank you for this profound comment. It has made me ponder on my musical choices. It is not simply because "I'm in the mood for Keane." It is so much more 😊
The scene where Carla says goodbye to Laverne to this song is one of the reason why Scrubs is one of my all time favorite TV shows ever!
So true! only got known this Song because of Scrubs.
May be the best combination of music and scene for the whole series. ua-cam.com/video/bjAcG0zTVUs/v-deo.html

The best thing about Keane's music, is that everyone listening hears what they need for whatever they are going through. Beautiful!
True. In fact this is based off a poem about a WW1 pilot

@@cj221983 I know but she wasn't my favourite character.
"Where will i meet my fate? Baby' I'm a man, I was born to hate."
Damn. Some powerful lyrics there
ריגשת ;-)
People give hate a bad rap.
Tom Ryder That reads a little odd, but I actually get it. I had some built up problems in the past with people who refused to treat me like a person, but we had mutual friends and they just didn't want to pick sides and wouldn't acknowledge the other person truly being a jerk. So yeah, started feeling a lot of pent up anger. Then one day someone responded to a status and told me that anger was a normal and necessary emotion like the rest and it wasn't fair that people would try to deny my feeling it in a piss poor attempt at non-confrontation, that it wasn't healthy to only feel or at least present the "good" emotions, especially if circumstances didn't make them appropriate/natural to feel.
Sad that I'm not even that close to the person who said that, but it was one of those forever helpful moments. It's not fair if you're being hurt or disrespected to not express anger at that and to always brush it off. Some people, it seems more so these days, do not see that as being the bigger person, only someone they can continue to direct their negativity at without consequences.
It's about war guys
The only part of the lyrics I actually could never feel (lol) and therefore refused to sing, back when I was listening to this song almost every night.
RIP Dad. You kept fighting til the very end.
thats what dads do
+Amanda Starr Sorry to hear that. I hope you can move on, but keep the memories of your dad and capture each day.
How beautifully said.
Rest in Peace
Amanda Starr he’s never gone when you mention him Lady Amanda ♓️♊️❤️🖤🌹⭐️✨🙏☘️
This is lyrically one of the greatest songs ever written.
By all acounts it was written to depict the thoughts and emotions of a soldier that's been sent out to war.
But you can interpret these words anyway you want.
Could be a loved one that has passed away, maybe you had a turbulent relationship with them when they were alive or maybe you didn't.
Could be a partner that you have separated from and this is describing the pain that you are feeling.
And I'm sure there are plethora of other scenarios that could be related to this song, and that is the genius of it !!!
This part is me: "Could be a partner that you have separated from and this is describing the pain that you are feeling."
I am no longer feeling the strong feeling of pain.
I think I am in the stage of acceptance.
Beautifully written and performed.
I love this song.
💙💙
i suspect that most of it lifted from the superb 'An Irish Airman Foresees His Death' by WB Yeats.
As one of the comments above says, much of it is taken from Yeats. The poem begins:
I know that I shall meet my fate
Somewhere among the clouds above;
Those that I fight I do not hate,
Those that I guard I do not love
That is so powerful and true.
This song still gives me all the feels a decade later. His voice does somethin to my soul. I wish music was still this good😭
I agree on all three of your statements here. Hardly anyone makes music this passionately anymore these days. :(
Like a mixture of Coldplay, Radiohead, U2 and Travis, and yet this song is still unmistakably Keane.
Don't forget crowded house
I don't think it would be surprising to say that my top favourite bands ever are Keane, Coldplay, and U2. Especially Keane and Coldplay, to me it's a tie, truly they're both at no. 1. Great artists!

Carlas goodbye to Laverne with this playing in the background is still one of the most emotional scenes ive seen in a Tv show-Its like she's actually saying it to a real life person-rather than a character

Worst year of my life.

Cuando ya te has recuperado completamente de algun mal episodio de tu vida, cantar esta cancion adquiere una dimension completamente diferente! Se siente maravilloso!
Concuerdo contigo!!! Hace unos años, me sentia perdido. Y ahora....
Nunca me habia sentido tan vivo. Tan inspirado a mejorar y a vivir.

Keane is unigue (by music voice words)
keane and coldplay

So much better than Coldplay.
@@theresaq8321 at least Keane's album are consistent, compared to Coldplay, turns out to a woke album in their latest
All of Keane's songs are equally beautiful.
I keep on hoping my current life is just one bad dream and I'll wake up back in 2015 when all was good for me.
I can't get over this videoclip. As soon as he gets out of the darkness and reaches the light, darkness peaks again. It's like a cicle. You'll have to keep looking for light, hopefully you'll not get tired, every time you reach it, there will always be darkness to face again, so you can look for light and face another darkness and on and on.

I wonder if anyone could feel what I feel when I listen to them...this kind of feeling is only produced by music of this level. They are awesome.
+Montse Ma I think I feel what you feel. No one else that I know feels that connection. It is hard to describe. I have seen them four times all over the U.S. They were a great band and who actually said something in their lyrics. Miss them.
+Jim H I only have seen them once when they came to Barcelona some years ago. I couldn't imagine that I would have the privilege to listen to them... I'd like to repeat that experience again!

Something about this song really hits me emotionally and I don’t even know why, it’s absolutely stunning
Same man, I rarely get really emotional by music but this song just hits me so hard. Can never finish it without tears in my eyes
Imagine if you heard this song for the first time in the days after a traumatic event like a break up. It takes me back to that time
Sometimes you can't play this song loud enough
Literally. They other day, I'm there listening to Keane, pressing the button to turn up the volume, but it was already up all the way. I'm still in denial though. There was absolutely no way that that was the loudest it could go.
Or listen to it enough
My neighbors just played this song and i searched for it, this is art
Old Soul perfect harmony. Cold play doesn't even hold a candle or matchstick for that matter!
One of the best songs of Keane .
So beautiful and emotional.
Keane masterpiece, genius.
I'd first listened this song couple years ago watching Scrubs. Never known about this group and never listened again since. I discovered it 2 days ago and went to this one song in my earphones while being in a bus travelling some towns and obviously roads, watching by the window. That was a blast in my mind and heart. Man that one hit hard when you go through something really bad for yourself.

The genius of this song is that it can be interpreted many different ways. Songwriting like this just doesn't happen as often as it should.
