  • The St. Louis metro area is served by MetroLink (known as Metro) and is the 11th-largest light rail system in the country with 46 mi (74 km) of double track light rail. The Red Line and The Blue Line both serve all the stations in the inner city, and branch to different destinations beyond in the suburban areas. Both lines enter the city north of Forest Park on the western edge of the city or on the Eads Bridge in downtown St. Louis to Illinois. All of the system track is in independent right of way, with both surface level and underground subway track in the city. All stations are independent entry, while all platforms are flush-level with trains. Rail service is provided by the Bi-State Development Agency (also known as Metro), which is funded by a sales taxes levied in the city and other counties in the region. The Gateway Multimodal Transportation Center acts as the hub station in the city of St. Louis, linking the city's light rail system, local bus system, passenger rail service, and national bus service. It is located just east of the historic grand St. Louis Union Station. ~Wikipedia

That was the first Metro system in the US that I ever got familiar with. Sixteen years ago, for a week. It doesn't look to have changed much.
It made nice use of the existing track.

This is not even close to being the first metro system in the US.

I've been to St Louis twice but I couldn't try out this one. I was with my family. I saw the elevated stations, though. I might visit the city this year as well. Let's see what will happen. :)
I just reached to that part where you've been up on the Arch. The 10 min time limit up there was such a disappointment last time. And they didn't even told us anything about that in advance....

But only east and west. If it also connected north and south this would be great. Maybe extra two lines which connect northeast with southwest and northwest with southeast respectively could bring it closer to perfection

Only rode it once in 01 for a Cardinals game technically not convenient with a construction worker's job title, which can change daily.
Unfortunately, Metro still has a problem curbing violence on their system.

There used to be rollsigns on most of the light rail cars in St Louis before they were replaced with LED signage between 2019 and 2023. The oldest cars will be retired instead.

One of the very flaws of US rail systems is the 20 minute headways. Less than 12 mins is considered unacceptable in the euro world.

This was on a Sunday, the lowest ridership day of the week. They’re not even running full trains because of the low expected ridership. US transit systems are funded by local taxes, in this case, a sales tax in the counties that it serves.

It’s because of two reasons: crime concerns on the system and because of the planned retirement of the system’s oldest cars. This is being done on weekends and during the midday and night period on weekdays. Two car trains will continue to run on rush hours only until the new cars completely arrive after which midday service with two cars will return.
