He can change and modulate his voice according to the actor and the situation of the song(sings according to the demand of the song). Amit Kumar could sing in different voices for different actors.If you carefully listen and observe his songs,Amit Kumar exactly sounded like Kishore da when he sang for Anil Kapoor,Amitabh Bacchan,Rajesh Khanna,Sunny Deol,Sanjay Dutt, Govinda,etc.While, he sounded different when he sang for Kumar Gaurav,Jackie Shroff,Salman Khan,Shah Rukh Khan, Aditya Pancholi, Rahul Roy,Sunil Shetty, etc. Amit Kumar could very easily sound and sing like Kishore da from early days of his career(during 70's),but he didn't try to copy his father because he didn't want to became a 'copycat' or a 'clone' of Kishore Kumar. Overall,we can say that both father (Kishore Kumar)and son(Amit Kumar) are legends & great singers. Instead of comparing them,we should just enjoy the beautiful and melodious gems,which the father and the son (Kishore da and Amit da) had given us in the form of their evergreen songs.

Well,according to Wikipedia,Amit Kumar was an active male playback singer from 1974 to 1994. In fact,he was the second most preffered male playback singer in Hindi films,after his dad and he worked with almost all the music directors of 80's & 90's and sang for almost all the heroes of 80's and 90's. Amit Kumar sang 170 Hindi songs and numerous superhit Bengali songs for R D Burman from 1976 to 1994. He even worked with and sang for the music maestro Ilaiyaraaja sir in many hit films. Ilaiyaraaja sir preffered Amit Kumar to sing Hindi dubbed versions of many superhit Tamil and Telugu songs,one example is the film 'Aadmi Aur Apsara' , which was the Hindi dubbed version of the superhit Telugu film 'Jagadika Veerudu Athiloka Sundari'(starring Chiranjeevi and SriDevi) and Amit Kumar sang all the Hindi dubbed songs of this film,which were chartbusters. You can also listen the song 'Aaya main aaya' ( Movie: Mahasangram),where Amit Kumar completely dominated and outclassed Udit Narayan.Well,if we talk about Amit Kumar's singing career,his career started in 70's,where he had to battle with the greatest singers of all time like Mohammed Rafi,Kishore Kumar,Mukesh,Mahendra Kapoor,Manna De,Hemant Kumar and don't forget K.J. Yesudas and S.P.Balasubrahmanyam. Also,he had to compete with his colleagues Shailendra Singh and Suresh Wadkar.The biggest challenge for him was to come out of Kishore da's shadow and prove his talent. During 70's ,some of his superhit songs were Bade acche lagte hain(Movie:Baalika Vaadhu),Na bole tum na maine kuch kaha and Uthe sabke kadam(Movie:Baton Baton Mein), Aati rahengi bahaarein(Movie:Kasame Vaade),Jaate ho jaane jaana (Movie:Parvarish),Dhala din aise (Movie:Laalkothi),Dekh mausam keh raha hai(Movie:Duniya Meri Jeb Mein), etc. During 70's,he sang many songs with the legendary singers like Mohammed Rafi,Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor,Manna De,K J Yesudas,Lata Mangeshkar,Asha Bhosle, etc. The songs which he sang with his dad in the hit movies like Des Pardes, Kasame Vaade,Golmaal,Desh Premee,etc became popular. Amit Kumar&Lata Mangeshkar duet 'Dushman na kare dost ne wo kaam'(Movie:Akhir Kyon?) became iconic song. Amit Kumar&Asha Bhosle duet 'Roz roz aankhon tale' (Movie: Jeeva) became an evergreen song. Then,Amit Kumar sang the songs like I am a street dancer and Pehle pehle pyar ki for Govinda in the hit film 'Ilzaam', which made Govinda, an overnight star. Then,in late 80's,Amit Kumar became the voice of Anil Kapoor and sang superhit songs for Anil Kapoor like Kehdo ki tum ho meri warna and Ek do teen in the blockbuster film 'Tezaab'. Still,Amit Kumar is in demand in live shows and concerts. Now,talking about his contemporaries and other singers of 80's and 90's. Singers should be judged on various factors like voice quality,voice control , voice modulation,depth in the voice, variations,versatility,etc.Talking about the singers of 80's, Mohammed Aziz, Shabbir Kumar,etc. were the imitators of legendary Mohammed Rafi sahab (they can be called as the Clones of Mohammed Rafi). During 80's,all the 'Mohammed Rafi type' songs(which were made keeping Rafi sahab in mind) went to Mohammed Aziz and Shabbir Kumar. They had powerful voice and also had depth in their voice with good voice control,but there was no modulation and versatility in their voices. Their voices were suitable mostly for sad & emotional songs and upto some extent romantic songs. Now,talking about the singers of 90's. Starting with Kumar Sanu,Kumar Sanu had a nasal touch in his voice and sang in overtly nasal tone,which made his voice sound unique than others. Kumar Sanu's voice was suitable only for romantic songs, with no voice control and no voice modulation. At high pitch and scale,he becomes completely nasal. Actually, Kumar Sanu was an imitator of Kishore Kumar(I must say a very bad imitator of Kishore Kumar,because he even didn't know how to do yodeling.). If you listen his cover versions of Kishore da's songs,he is completely nasal,with no expressions. Majority of his superhit songs/more than 90% of his songs are of 'soft romantic genre'. His voice was not suitable for all kinds of songs.I don't think Kumar Sanu could be able to sing the songs like Laila o laila,I am a street dancer,Kehdo ki tum ho meri warna, Tirchi topiwale,Tap tap tapori,Filmo ke saare hero,It's a challenge,etc. Talking about Udit Narayan,his voice structure and singing style were original(that's good). Udit Narayan had a sweet voice. His voice control was also good. But,his voice modulation was very weak. His voice too was also mostly suitable for romantic songs(like that of Kumar Sanu).Talking about Vinod Rathod,he was another imitator and clone of Kishore Kumar. He was atleast a good imitator of Kishore da. His voice sounded close to Kishore da. But,his voice was too loud,thick,rough and unclear. His voice was suitable mostly for foot tapping numbers and the songs of high pitch. His voice was not suitable for songs of all genres. Now,talking about Abhijeet Bhattacharya,his voice was soft,thin,no depth in his voice,there is a little bit nasal touch in his voice and sometimes sounds unclear. Although his voice sounded cute and well suited to ShahRukh Khan,his voice was not suitable for all the heroes. Now,finally talking about Amit Kumar's voice and singing skills,Amit Kumar had a masculine, powerful & versatile voice with excellent voice control and brilliant voice modulation. If anyone wants to see his voice quality,listen the songs like Bade acche lagte hain,Dekho maine dekha hai ek sapna, Ye zameen ga rahi hai,Teri chaahat ke siva jaanam meri koi chaahat nahi and Dil jigar ke jaan accha hai,Tip tip tip baarish shuru ho gayi. Amit Kumar is a legend in his own right and shouldn't be compared with any other singer of 80's or 90's . Here,I had given my honest and sincere opinion about all the singers.
