Install a SYE in a Jeep XJ the easy way/NP231 upgrades with Adams Driveshaft for XJ, TJ & MJ

  • Some Guy takes on his first real driveline project with installing the Rough Trail SYE to fit a brand new Adams Driveshaft in the rear end of his Jeep Cherokee XJ. The NP231 transfer case was installed in a range of jeep vehicles such as the XJ, TJ and MJ for decades.
    You'll need at-least one car jack, a standard range of wrenches, 2 quarts of ATF 4, RTV gasket maker and a torque stick capable of 150 foot pounds to install this kit.
    I bought this kit with my own money, no sponsored products.

    Great video! The trick with mapping out all the bolts is really smart. We all do it, we start yanking out bolts and we think we're going to remember which ones went where, but then we don't remember. I agree with your assessment of comparative difficulty too. I would be easier to do the SYE install on a bench but there's the added effort of removing the transfer case. As long as you can fit underneath your jeep without any problems it is totally doable to install the SYE in the vehicle. Keep up the good content.

    Very well made video, really enjoyed it. As someone planning on buying/building my 1st Cherokee this year, I've been watching tons of UA-cam videos. However there was one thing that stood out to me in your video, and that was the amount of RTV you used in resealing your TC. I own an 05 GMC 2500HD 4x4 with one of the common New Venture TC's that are known for the pump wearing a hole in the rear case half.Mine doesn't leak yet, but they all will eventually unless you put the proper upgrade part in them. My TC also won't shift into 4lo (grinds) unless you turn the engine off. Planning on pulling it and addressing these issues this year. So I've also watched several "Precision Transmission" videos addressing the leak/hole issue. The one thing "Richard" (God) always stresses is not over using the RTV when resealing your case halves. He has shown countless examples of how the excess RTV that squishes out inside the case ends up in the bottom of your TC and ends up clogging up the screen on the pickup tube, obviously leading to starving your pump of ATF and shortening the life of the TC. I'm sure many of you are already familiar with Precision Transmissions channel. If not check it out and prepare yourself to be educated by an experienced mechanic and drag racer!
    Not trying to be a "know it all", just thought it was some very worthy info to share!

    This is an interesting repair, with super tips as to dismantle and assembly. Exactly why I think it's very useful is that owners of the XJ like myself, come to love various quality as to the handle character of the 4x4 and quite all of the cargo and functional passenger domain.
    Various major drive train work, which can include repair and replacement to transmission, should include a truly long look at the torque converter (and starter ring) at disassembly. That output plate, a clock bolt configure of only one correct mounting. Absolutely use top quality seals, correctly installed and where useful, pre order new bolts. The realm of hi mileage at the rear main seal, and all further rear drive components require particular care in both assembly and fitment to prevent the dreaded Jeep oil spots to drive way. The torque converter alignment and wear to the transmission front seal, as where a wear grove can be very slight but difficult as to cause a constant leak. Another difficult leak component just forward, is the oil filter mounting o ring. A problem to remove as very tight clearance with a hex recess drive to the center mount fastener. If available to replace that o-ring, a must for longer term slight oil leak avoidance.
    For the serious minded XJ owner, where the exhaust is so fitted to unmount with bolted weldment, as to a joint, is a huge asset to remove any of the driveline and transfer case, transmission. *and or motor pull.
    Not mentioned, but a truly nice mod is replacement of the power steering bracket and device to upgraded aftermarket replacement. And, entire further mods are at hand.
    These units can still be found and converted to nice project units at a fair price. Fair trails to owners. M.

    I did an Advance Adapters SYE on one of my XJ's. I know you can do it in the rig but I found it easier to just pull the T-case and do it on the bench. T-case comes out in about 30 or 40 minutes. Best thing you can do is get rid of those damn t-case drops. I am in Washington as well, don't see many people on here from Wa.

    • @SomeGuyOutside
      @SomeGuyOutside  2 роки тому

      Hello fellow washingtonian. I put the TCase drops in a few years ago to help prevent the eating of Ujoints the stock set up was doing to me and they are GONEZO now. Id seen a bunch of videos of people taking it out and as a mostly self taught home mechanic I certainly felt some hesitancy towards doing it. I didnt see many videos on doing it in the vehicle and figured theres probably other people who would feel more comfortable attempting it their first time the same way 😂.

    The XJ's crossmember definitely makes this an easier job to do under the vehicle. The TJ's skid plate covers the whole thing up from underneath so it's a much bigger PITA. Wish the TJ had a cross member and separate skid.

    No one's been "Lied" to about removing the transfer case for the SYE install. I think this video illustrates why it easiers with greater success doing this install out of the vehicle. Try it installed, and when you realize cleaning and re sealing the case halves in car and not having a leak afterword is unlikely. Then you can do it again with the TC out of the vehicle successfully.Take for instance the 3 hours spent removing/installing the output shaft c clip, a task out of the vehicle would take less than a minute each with the proper tool. Multiply this extra time for the difficulty lying on your back performing all the steps involved and your better off spending some of that time simply removing the TC in the first place. If your experienced with numerous SYE installs, you may save time and have a leak free install in car, otherwise I'd pull the TC out and do the install comfortably on your work bench.

  • @nickcampbell6115
    @nickcampbell6115 Рік тому

    I agree, pulling the transfer case wouldn't be worth it. The work you have to do on the t-case under the vehicle is much easier than accessing the 6 bolts that holds the t-case in. Thanks for calling out to put the oil pump and pick up together first. Great video.

      I’m not sure you’d be able to do that with them installed but after maybe 🤔? My only worry would be that it would compromise the strength of ring material and if it breaks you’d have a couple tiny chunks of metal flying around your transfer case. I think you would really enjoy a better set of snap ring pliers. I took apart a np231 to make a crawl box and I've rebuild a np435 transmission they both have that kind of snap ring and the cheap snap rings pliers are like death for removing them. The snap rings are like that for a reason and it is because they rotate with the shaft and as such the tabs coming up for the holes like the traditional snap ring have will cause problems by being out of balance and in really high rpm situations could cause the snap ring to come off the shaft and really give you some problems.

    • @SomeGuyOutside
      @SomeGuyOutside  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah so I originally bought a pair of snap rings listed as 2 1/2” spread with like four different heads but they only really spread to about 1 7/8” and the nose/teeth material we’re not close to quality enough. The second pair I got did spread wider but I still felt like they could be better. Definitely looking for a better pair. Good to know on the snap rings aswell! Thank you
