I remember when my period came unexpectedly when I went to my boyfriend's house ...it stained his bed sheet , my boyfriend as at then humiliated me , embarrassed me , made a big deal out of it... I had to wash of that stain at midnight ... I left in the morning never to return to him ever again . Each time he calls to ask me to come back to him , I reminded about that incidence.... his excuse was ..."I can't stand the sight of blood, I am sorry , I know I was childish"..... my reply always .."in my state when I needed protection ,covering, understanding, protection, you never stood by me ...that means in a worse situation like illness or something you won't be there "....

When I was 16 this happened to me at a friend of the family's house. There were other people there and he saw it when I stood up before anyone else did. He was so kind, stood behind me and said he wanted to show me something in the backroom. When got there he told me what happened, gave me sweatpants and told me not to worry he had laid a magazine in the chair so nobody saw. I should mention he was a much older gay male. I was so grateful for his compassion, understanding and how he came to aid.

She isn't 16. Why would she choose to stay and go through the embarrassment? People nowadays think they need to make some point about everything. Yep, our period is a natural thing and so is pooping and peeing and sex. Most of us know when to respect ourselves and others enough not to do these things in public. She should have left and none if this would have happened. Ignorant

This triggered a memory of me back in college sitting in class during a lecture and all of a sudden the flood gates opened. I knew I couldn't stand up to quietly excuse myself as I knew blood was all over my backside and on the chair. My only option was to wait for class to end, let all the other students clear out and ask for help from my teacher (who thankfully was female). I was so embarrassed and an emotional mess but I will never forget her kindness lending me her sweater to wrap around my waist and running to the restroom to gather paper towels to help clean up. It happened so fast and it was such a mess. I don't know what I would have done if she wasn't there to help me.

She did this on purpose and it was no accident. This is childish and indecent behavior and no way to effectively get a constructive point across. If it was a true accident it would not have been handled like this. I have extremely painful heavy periods and can relate to the embarrassment and inconvenience of them. That doesn't make it right for me to be intentionally unsanitary and gross people out on purpose. Some people are incontinent and cannot help it, but we don't make a political point by pissing and sharting our pants. That's such a narcissistic and childish attitude!

@@somie4639 OMG, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for not excusing this atrocity. This woman did not have the decency to be embarrassed about the nastiness of the situation but instead paraded it around as a badge of womanhood and tried to make it appear as if to promote a sick type of social injustice for young women that were made to feel ashamed of themselves. Look at the way she's dressed, the one button in her jacket is crying out for help; she pointed to her collared shirt that barley concealed her chest because she needed a size or two larger and her pants were so tight it's remarkable the blood had room to seep out. Her behavior suggests that she felt no shame going up to the podium to speak as if her soild pants was her rites of passage. Then then the unthinkable happened, she asked for protection, but from what? It was the council session which needed protection from her. Part of the rights to womanhood is our responsibility to behave in a respectful manner and knowing what is to be shared and what is to be kept private. It us not necessary for the world to know when we're in our cycle nor are they, especially men, interested in seeing the actual blood, that's disgusting and nasty and so is she.

The teacher took me to the bathroom, wash my overall and panty, and let me remain in the bathroom stall. She took the uniform to the Home Economic classroom and allowed another student to iron it until dry. Then it was given back to me with sanitary napkin.
The embarassing part of it was the next day. The early morning lesson was Menstration. Everybody knew the topic was choosen because i had my period in school and got soiled the previous day.
The sad thing about it was the teacher spoke in a manner that made it look as though i was careless for not checking 28 days to put on a pad. BUT IT WAS NOT 28 DAYS, IT WAS MY 2nd PERIOD AND IT CAME 21 DAYS AFTER MY 1st period.

After listening closely it is my understanding that some informed her that there was an issue- that her clothing was stained. And instead of addressing the problem she “paraded it up and down” prior to the Call to Order. That’s why they kept saying “she’s picketing”. She also, when speaking for herself, immediately brought attention to social issues surrounding the matter of menstrual cycles. She’s being criticized for the WAY she chose to highlight it- NOT because she had an “accident”.
I happen to agree. You don’t have to denigrate YOURSELF to make a point. As they said make a “motion” to have a mature discussion about it. Kudos to the women who had enough insight and discernment to understand “the play” and expose it. Kudos to the man taking the lead for calmly asking enough questions to understand what was really happening, and for asking her to go change- not because she was having a period, but to change her “beautiful suit” and come back for mature discussion on the social issue she was attempting to highlight.
She may/may not have been on her cycle. If she had an accident I sympathize with her. I also think that others there do as well. However, arrogant “protests” like that may work here in America, but they don’t play that mess in places like Africa.

This happened to me when I was young and only in the first year of having my period... it was at school, and it was -- of ALL people!! -- my junior high school CRUSH who came up to me after I stood up from a class and was walking through the halls, desperate to get to my locker and then to go to the washroom, and gently pulled me aside to quietly say "I think you need to go to the washroom".... I was MORTIFIED because it was him and it was the first thing he'd ever said to me, and he was my crush, but I was GRATEFUL for the class and respect that he showed! And this was a 15-16 year old guy! He was raised right, for sure! It made a mortifying situation much less so! I definitely feel for this lady! It could have been handled in the same way as it had been for me... one of the other ladies in senate could have sat beside her and whispered the same thing, so she could excuse herself and go change... or offer her a scarf or something to wrap around her waist, SOMETHING.

Wow Kudos to the senator for not taking sides and showing a human side to this. I have been in a situation where my period was so heavy that all of a sudden I had blood seeping through my pad and onto my clothes, thank God I was wearing black, but I was so conscious of not sitting next to anyone I just couldn't wait to go home and get changed and washed. I was working and was meant to be with a male colleague of all reasons, we had gone off the island and was coming back home! Sometimes you can be as cautious as you can but you will always get hit when you least expect it and it happens to the best of us regardless of our age. I care less about what those of you may continue to justify what Senator Gloria did rather than to see what she was was very disrespectful and down right nasty plain and simple! I’m 50 now & had a hysterectomy at 34 and it was soooo freeing!!
My cycle started (or in middle of it technically) began randomly from day 10-18 or 19.
I had to be ‘prepared’ for a sudden rush at any moments & that is NOT reasonable.
I had full access to hygiene products. I feel for the young ladies in the world who do not.
I can see how disruptive & life stifling it could be.
Imagine sitting in a restaurant, your vehicle, walking through grocery store, wherever, whenever… it doesn’t matter & in my case, it wasn’t predictable.
Just the whoosh of wet that alerted me & wearing ‘protection’ to try to prevent that for 6 or 7 day ‘start’ window isn’t reasonable.
Not only that… women can flood beyond protection.
Flow through, or pass tampon & then slip over the pad even within minutes of reinstalling protection.
I had fibroids. It was not easily managed & accidents occurred.
My only relief came from having my uterus removed, which is not an option for some, and is not wanted in others who still want an option to have children.
So, understand if you think it’s easy to deal with because you are going from your experience, just know… your situation might change after you have children & your uterus stretches out, then shrinks back with stretch marks that can produce clots that are a normal part of your cycle, too.
If you are ignorant & only consider your situation as the common experience… then speak when your experience has something to speak on.
Otherwise, keep your judgement to yourself.

You are so right! I started my cycle at the age of 11 and have dealt with heavy flow a lifetime. Even for those with access to pads and tampons (we didn’t have cups then), we know they fail us from time to time. Some flows are so bad they are merciless rivers of uncontrolled bleeding and one of my friends became so ill during her cycle that it caused nausea and related incidents. She had a half size uterus and couldn’t bear a child full term and was like a sister to me so I considered being her surrogate years after having been one of her bride’s maids. She wanted children and had all the suffering that goes with this but still couldn’t have a child of her own and ended up pregnant and loosing that child. We as women need to be there for one another, not this type of thing we saw in Kenya. So sad it brought tears to my eyes to watch it. My heart goes out to this Senator Gloria Orwoba , Deity bless her and I’m glad she held her head high while another woman used this as a teaching moment in her attempt to bring out an important issue about this matter and poverty with young women who are not as fortunate as many of us are. Our cycles may be natural but we are human beings and during puberty it is the hardest time in a young person’s life. They don’t need this type of stress added to it and no child should feel so humiliated that they feel a need to commit suicide over such things.

That happened to me in my 50's from fibroids. It was hard to manage, and I had accidents. I had excessive bleeding, that could not be helped. I had to change protection often, but it was hard to manage at work. I bled so much I was often anemic, and had to take supplemental iron. It is a biological disorder, and cannot be helped. Fortunately, a kind coworker allowed me to go home and change once. She was discreet and did not make a big deal out of it. In this video, they are shaming her, instead of reassuring and helping her.
