I thought I had issues with flexibility as well, but found that if I corrected my posture and ensured my knees were properly bent with my chest up - it was muchhhh easier.
I find it super easy to really overthink this. Once you get it, it just becomes second nature. The way I learned it was you pretend you're going to transition into going backwards but just don't commit and keep that leading foot planted in a forward motion.
as always good explanation. We new guys to hockey who are just learning this stuff thank you, I didn't start playing ICE hockey till high school and everyone just assumed I knew what I was doing.. I am embarrassed to play in our local league, aside from stick and puck. getting better everyday though, please keep it up
commenting 11 years after you, but I started 3 years ago as a 32 year old. Anyone watching this video trying to learn, just know you can get there. Keep at it!
Another awesome thing about that type of turn is as the puck carrier you can use it to your advantage, go in one direction do the turn and as you turn or when i do it, you're already loading a wrist shot and you can take a good hard wrist shot to the net, or a solid pass to someone who's open. The only downside is some players will try to shove your lead skate away and trip you but if you have solid balance, you can protect the puck and still pass or shoot.
I do this all the time at work when I'm skate guarding. If I'm the only guard on the rink, I'll go around the pods that we put out like this, so I can keep my eyes on the majority of the rink. Never even knew it had any names at all. Didn't even realize it had any practical use in game. Just started doing it one day.
Awesome to see your partnership with Hockey-Community! i use the app all the time for pick up games. Hockey-community + how to hockey = life is good. :)
Jeremy your videos and instructional techniques are great to watch I'm picking up so much from them and my skating is getting better and better just wish I could go every day. Thanks :)
Thanks for watching, don't forget to join us on Facebook and check out the website. If you have any questions about the Mohawk or something related just ask. Jeremy
I had an idea. In a shootout, you head towards the goalie at high speed. Just before you are in poke check range, do a really tight Mohawk turn and flick the puck through your legs. Would this work?
before i learned to do this, i had the same problem and it was a couple of things 1. i hadnt established very good balance on my skates yet 2. not using the low bent knees hockey stance this turn or move is all about balance as your skating on mostly 1 foot for a majority of the turn, or atleast when i do it i shift back and forth (still working on my balance)
***** I've been doing hip stretches for about a week now and they've helped immensely. Mostly Just butterflies and something called a "Pidgeon Pose" from yoga (google it)
Good explanation, but I call those heel to heel glides, done so for the very reason you explain. When I think mohawk turns, it is a forward to backward transition, done, so as not to loose any speed when transitioning from forward to backward. I do like your videos, keep them up.
Thanks. I can't even get my feet more than 90 degrees to each other. I'm 53, and have very good cardio vascular fitness, but the muscles are not supple.
kyle mALICK Try practicing without your skates on first... Then get out on the ice(or rink if you play roller hockey) and do it without moving like in this video, then try it moving slowly... Its going to feel really weird when you get it right, but it improves your reactions to plays on the ice/rink... Hope this helped :P
I know you have it in the title, but this is only called a spread eagle. A mohawk turn is a forwards-to-backwards transition. While skating forwards, you pick up one leg and open your hips like the spread eagle except that you step onto the back foot while simultaneously picking up the front foot.
I'm not sure but I think your mic was picking up your jacket a lot. Or someone was throwing a beanbag ball around. Otherwise great how to :) Have been doing these for a while but had no idea they actually had a name, not to mention a cool name too :D
cadense it might also be an NTR (national training rink), they have tons of them in canada and theyre smaller rinks used specifically for training and rehab from an injury
Jordan Carpanzano , smaller rinks for TRAINING and REHAB ?????? No . It LOOKS small because of the seating in the stands . The SMALLER rinks are outside . Why would you use a NTR if they use a smaller rink ? Think about , it ain't hard !
Jordan Carpanzano , And what " point ' were you trying to make ? That you don't know what you're talking ? The only one that's an idiot , is you , Jordan . Again , think about it . It ain't hard .
It's a nice lil' " how do .... " , but , it's not called a " Mohawk turn " . Ask any body that figure skates , and stop and start going the other way , and he talks that " Swede turn " , or power turn , whatever you want to call it , leg over leg , in NOT extra work . Stop and go, that's EXTRA work . And , you can't make a figure skate turn at full tilt either . Watch a figure skater when they do that . They have to slow down to do it . Or use over half the rink to do it .
Dwight- you commented that you KNOW with 100% certainty "it's not called a " Mohawk turn ". It's a big world out there; way bigger than the tiny world you live in. Many things are given different names, and I wouldn't be so quick to say one name is right and another is wrong. If you google it, there's a gazillion references to the mohawk turn by ice & inline hockey folks AND figure skaters. They must be plain wrong, or maybe, you are. Your rambling about leg over leg (cross over stride?) makes no sense. Maybe - before you hit the submit button, re-read what you wrote, and as you said in another comment "think about it, it ain't hard".
Bruce Robinson , Blah , blah , blah . That's all you said . In figure skating , which , by the way , it's called " inline turn " , which , again , came from there . Look it up . It ain't hard , only if you want be , Bruce . Look up the power turn , Bruce . Talk about something you know about . It's what the Swedes did , back in the early '70's . It's a BIG wold , that is getting smaller . But , I guess that doesn't compute with you .
I hate these teaching videos, not just yours but all of them. Just teach the kids not to bunch up and keep moving with or without the puck and they'll figure this stuff out naturally
These videos have been really helpful for me, I'm 21 and just started playing hockey three months ago. These videos along with hockey tutorial have been really big for my progress
I've been skating several times a week now for 6 months (I used to skate many years ago, but could not even plough stop) and these videos, not just from Jeremy and gang, are really useful. Several people have told me I am a good skater. I'm not, but I am improving. My best trick is a high speed backwards hockey stop, all thanks to UA-cam videos.
Believe it or not, this really helps people. I used to skate a little as a child but it was very basic. Now that I'm older I got into skating again. I often times saw people doing things that I wanted to do as well, but I just could not figure out how. And when you're not a 5 year old kid but a grown up, falling hurts way more (1.75m vs 0.75m is a big difference) so you want to avoid it as much as possible. UA-cam tutorials on how to skate have helped teach me how to slowly get used to the move and then do drills to get better. I'm shy and would never ask anyone at the rink for help, so these videos are great for me because I'm really making progress!
It took me 6 months to get to know some people at my local rink, but since then I have had lots of helpful advice. It takes time, but it is worth making the effort. Go regularly, and with luck you'll meet 'the gang'.
Any tips or stretches to be able to get into that position? Have trouble opening up both feet at same time to be able to do it.
flyers10az me too
@@JuJu-vl2et use the back of the couch or counter or something, put your feet in this position and bend down using the couch or counter as support.
straddle stretches? pile squat?

Dude this is great. Just learning how to play the game, and it is a very useful channel. Thanks!

has anyone ever told you this is probably one of the better hockey tips channel?
So after 10 years of not playing im back in the swing of things, your videos help alot!
This little bit of skating instruction helped me a bunch, it's so simple too.

Hockey-community + how to hockey = life is good. :)
Best mohawk video I've come across...all the others do it too fast, and slo-mo doesn't alway help in breaking down the moves. thanks.
It takes a while to develop the hip flexability, doing stretch on dryland often is the key .
Thanks!
I struggle to identify the difference between an eagle turn and a mohawk turn. Any help would be great. Love your videos!!
think they are the same turn different names
It's called a few different things, mohawk, eagle, pivot when used for transitioning.
Excellent as always but a clip of you in a game would be awesome!
I can barely get in that stance while standing on solid ground
+Paul R Just try to become more flexible
Dopeness, I've been looking for a more in-depth video of this. Big Ups H2H!
any stretches i could do to help open that far / very stiff knees
Jeremy your videos and instructional techniques are great to watch I'm picking up so much from them and my skating is getting better and better just wish I could go every day. Thanks :)
I try this but I am not that flexible, I struggle with it . I will try those techniques. Thank you. Keep up the great work
With the mohawk turn I can only turn around cones with my right foot forward I can’t do it with my left foot forward which I wanna work on
The tiles should still work, but it might be easier if you got the roll up shooting pad
GREAT video!
Thanks for watching, don't forget to join us on Facebook and check out the website. If you have any questions about the Mohawk or something related just ask.
Jeremy
how do you get your skates to dig in on every stride
wow i got it really quick, thanks man
how do you get the ice all to yourself? do you pay for it?
Wat kind of gloves do u have and how much were they
brilliant and informative
Your videos are very helpful! Thanks man!
that jacket is the bomb!
great vid!

Probably not but it would look absolutely filthy if it dod
+Behe Beeh yeah xD if someone was skilled enough to pull this off that would be legendary! :) (Pavel Barber I'm looking at you)
Is this possible to do in street hockey also?
Yes
Nice clip
I have those gloves. They are really nice!
I love hockey to. I used to play hockey to.
I can do this bare-footed, but I can't seem to get my feel like this on my Bauers.
Any reasons?
before i learned to do this, i had the same problem and it was a couple of things
1. i hadnt established very good balance on my skates yet
2. not using the low bent knees hockey stance
this turn or move is all about balance as your skating on mostly 1 foot for a majority of the turn, or atleast when i do it i shift back and forth (still working on my balance)
I'm still getting the hang of it. Can't seem to go "Straight" though.
you really gotta bend your knees and open up your hips
Still Stuck like a butt.

i call them open toes
sharp or blunt blade is much more better ?
Nike / Bauer XXV they are older I think they were around $100
What stick is that is it a nxg
I'm not sure if it's the same sing as a Mohawk position
Can somebody tell me?
Show how to do a Spin-o-rama!!!
perfect thank you so much dude
Yah great job. I love hockey can't wait to play in a league.
Can a Mohawk turn be used to help go into a transition from forwards to backwards skating?
yes
What does open up our hips mean ?
i can do it perfectly on my left side but just a little work on my right side
I love hockey
Thanks. I can't even get my feet more than 90 degrees to each other. I'm 53, and have very good cardio vascular fitness, but the muscles are not supple.
Nice
You are smoooooth!
NICE
We all have trouble doing this move. I tried it once and thought I had dislocated my hips. I could not imagine taking a hut in that position.
It is really easy
can any one help me, every time I go on one foot, and try to plant my other foot, the first foot always turns around? any suggests

Was this always called the mohawk turn?...my coach just told me that it was like a one stride pivot.
Oprah is THE master at this. Really.
Thx Jeremy, .. awsome .. (y)
They're old bauer vapor gloves.
Sharp skates good balance
I know you have it in the title, but this is only called a spread eagle. A mohawk turn is a forwards-to-backwards transition. While skating forwards, you pick up one leg and open your hips like the spread eagle except that you step onto the back foot while simultaneously picking up the front foot.
cool
I think i remember a karate class where they had us try to break in our legs to split like that, and it was not pain free.
I can do this but I can bend my feet back so I turn the other way
I'm not sure but I think your mic was picking up your jacket a lot. Or someone was throwing a beanbag ball around. Otherwise great how to :) Have been doing these for a while but had no idea they actually had a name, not to mention a cool name too :D
If you have a pair of rollerblades this turn is natural
Cale Makar is an example of an NHL player who has mastered using the mohawk turn to his competitive advantage.
Ask Sidney Cosby what he calls it because he is the master at this turn. Watch him or his tapes doing this and people fall away from like children.
I've been able to do this perfectly since i was 7! I didn't even know it was useful.
''Rocking back and forth'' is extremely difficult
Lol I call it a spread eagle
i call it a rubber ducky
Why does it look like a super small rink?
Jeremy is a big lad. :)
Some arena’s have 3on3 rinks
My right leg started twitching just watching this
I can't get my heels together and toes out even if I was put on the rack
Go on youtube en go hockey shot one.4 goalie is best clip
It's easier for beginners to do it with a wider stance.
i tried this on my weak side and it was hard....
Go on hockey. Shot one.4 goalie
this is so hard for me T____T but I'll keep practicing
YO! What up past me!? We finally go it :D
This is so RAD!
Come play for my team.
I was taught it was an eagle turn not a Mohawk turn
Is it just me, or is the rink a bit small?
I think that's due to the camera. It's just an optical illusion.
cadense it might also be an NTR (national training rink), they have tons of them in canada and theyre smaller rinks used specifically for training and rehab from an injury

I always end up transitioning backwards when I open up my legs
Flex ur leg a little so it stays in that position
This is neither a Mohawk or a spread eagle
julie canfield It's neither nor, not neither or.

How do you eagle without turning? Almost as if you’re surfing the ice?
