  • The Commodore SID chip sounds awesome! But there are (slight) differences between the SID chips used in the different C64 models over time.
So I chose 3 different machines from my collection. The first is a bullnose/breadbin C64 with a 1983 assy 250407 board and a 6581R4 SID Chip.
The second is an C64c with a newer assy 250466 board an a 6581R4AR SID chip. The older machine might have had its SID chip replaced, since its quite similar to the one in the newer machine, at least the production date. The sound is quite different in some tunes. The filters on the older machine are much "stronger" and less "linear". They can distort the sound quite a bit. I like that!
The final machine is a 1990s breadbin C64g model released after the c64c. It features the cost reduced assy 250469 board with the newer 8580R5 SID chip. This was a "bug fixed" version of the SID chip, which behaved more like the design sheets Commodore has published. The Filters behave completely different from the older SID chips and the flaw in the chip which enabled you to play sampled sound has been fixed too. Thats the reason, why the volume of the 3rd scream at the beginning of this video is so low.
I have chosen these 2 tunes because they are among my favorite c64 tunes.
