Thank you for mentioning Polly's Natural Boutique store😉. We've been lucky to collaborate with Dr Crean over the past few years and learnt a lot during that time.😉 It was eye-opening and definitely changed the way we feed our flock and improved their health dramatically. Sadly not all parrot owners are interested in following the recommendations for various reasons and the convenience of feeding processed food remains. But we continue spread the message and help as many birds transition onto fresh food.

We run a permanent sanctuary for abused and neglected parrots of all sizes. I haven't been a fan of pellets for a very long time. We are very much working on figuring out the costs to go pellet free. Pellets are only 25 % of our birds diets, but one need only see what happens to them when you throw the waste out for the wild birds to know that pellets aren't great. Thank you so much for this.

We recently adopted a b&g mccaw in very poor health condition. Staph infection and no bath for over a year. Diet of tuna chicken and Ritz crackers and peanut butter ritz and tuti fruity zupreeme. Super hormonal so I wanted to get her off of soy. I went to the natural grocers and picked up all ingredients on the back of the harrison's food. Minus soy corn and peanut. I ground whole almonds. Added coconut shreds and hemp seeds ( costco cheapest) sesame seeds whole flax Ordered mikey and mia's shelby calming mix to mix in. My bird won't touch harrisons now and is leaving very little waste. And it is WAY less expensive! Her appetite and behavior is SO much improved! Much less aggressive and more loving every day. Fresh veg chop daily too. Also adding Baja Gold Sea minerals into her water because our plants don't give us all these minerals these days. Please try it!

Didn’t expect to see Mr. Crean here! Though I wasn’t paying enough attention to notice his teaching style (my care for school didn’t kick in until next semester, whoops) over a decade ago, Mr. Crean was popular and well-respected. His jokes and anecdotes were funny, and he somehow kept all the troublemakers quiet. Even they had nothing but good to say of him. I grew up with many exotic birds and though I didn’t pay any mind to the material, I appreciated DJ Ice Crean! I think I still have some CreanCash packed away somewhere.

Thank you for having this honest vet on your channel, and giving out thus information. I knew when every bird group started pushing pellets and screaming at people to stop feeding anything else that we were all seeing the same thing as the Hills Science Diet dog and cat food fiasco of the 80s and 90s where they got vets to recommend their food to everyone, telling everyone that it was a complete diet and that you were basically an animal abuser if you didn’t. In some ways it was good as it got people to rethink just eating junk from the grocery store. But it also wasn’t much better. I’m just glad we are all finally being woken up to the pellet myth. I still feed pellets (Tops also) but not as the sole food. I didn’t go seedless like people SCREAMED on social media to do. I make my own chop weekly.

I absoultely love watching Dr.Crean talk about nutrition as it's a real eye opener to how many elements a parrot diet really is, and not just some simple cheap seeds. The evolution of parrot diet through the decades has been amazing. When Dr.Crean mentioned mushrooms being safe, I am a bit curious as how that can be? A lot sources say that mushrooms can cause like digestive issues and considering it's a fungi. Some parts causing liver issues. Does anyone have sources for the mushroom claim?

I'm sure I'll get flack again 🙈 but I'm saying this just for anyone watching this video and are thinking Wow, I can't do all this?!
Absolutely hands down the best diet is a minimally processed food diet ❤️ Parrots should be getting mostly fresh foods, like 80+%. I don't sweat giving my Parrots pellet meals if I can't make chop. I do my best, but if anyone is seeing this and wants to do better, please do what you can ❤️ adding fresh foods every day, sprouts, greens, flowers, variety is so important!
Im so thankful that fresh diets are being more and more encouraged, and that shelf stable foods are available for when I can't get certain foods (because yes, many places around the world, even first world countries, experience food insecurity) sprouts have been a godsend for my flock, I can buy in bulk and sprout every week, I make chop in bulk, and I try to honour where my Parrots come from (I have a cockatiel and a Meyer's)

Thank you for this video. I am already feeding few of the items discussed here, sprouted seeds are definitely a good way to make sure my budgies eat something else than the dry seeds. I do try to feed them chop but that has not been too successful, I make them human grade seed and grain mix and offer Top’s pellets. We do have Polly’s avian tea also (and can’t wait for the new hormone one coming out soon) Budgies are very slow to take up new food ideas. Sprouted seed was the biggest success so far. One of my budgies is quite unwell (she is a rescue and now she is suffering with lipoma and heart/kidney disease as result of previous neglect) I am very keen to get her eating properly, however, she is the most reluctant one to try new foods. This is amazing, so much information. It makes you think about what you actually feed your birds, which isn't that different to human food - too much of anything isn't good. I have spent a small fortune on different type of pellets because I read pellets are good, but when it all arrived and I looked at the labels, there was a tone of fillers and things that are not considered good. I even found one type that smells like sweets. Since I've seen your insta story on freeze dried food, I have ordered some stuff from the same company and I intend for my birds to eat better. Right at the end, you've mentioned transitioning Mikey and Mia to new food - it's very helpful to know, because like many humans owned by birds, I was worried my birds will starve to death if I don't give them what they know. Realistically I should know that no animal will do that but there is something that makes you panic about that.
Thank you for this video, I will definitely be referring back to it to pick up on the things I might have missed the first time

Thank you so much for this podcast!! I watched your video prior to this about how you cut out pellets and started Mikey & Mia on other healthy dry ingredients. I was curious when I saw all those bags of nutritious foods and I wanted to know all about them and where they came from. So since then I have switched my caique over to some of the China prairie & Beak bars from Jason crean. I also bought tea from both places. My caique love this diet. And I try to give variety. I'm getting another caique baby in a few days and I have to wean her off of zupreem fruit bites as soon as I get her.
But I always tried to feed my bird the healthiest pellets (tops)in the evening and chop in the morning although he never cared for it. The stuff I bought was mixed with oat groats & some seeds and he would just pick through it & not eat any pellets. So I was so happy when you introduced Jason to everyone. I learned so much more today too that surprised me, like cooking the food. I just did that the other day with rice & put raisins and other veggies in it for a variety away from his normal chop. I also find him very interesting because I'm always learning about nutrition myself. I try to eat organic clean foods. So it all seems to go hand in hand. Thanks again. I think I'm going to send this to my avian vet. The one I was going to is licensed but I don't feel like she is fully educated & now we just got a new vet in, a young women, she is passionate about all animals. She doesn't have her avian .license but she seems to have more education. She worked with exotic birds at a zoo. So I switched vets at this animal hospital I would rather take my birds to someone who is educated. 😀👍 Thank you again!!! I can't thank you enough! 🥰

I thought your last video was awesome, this one was even better, reinforces not trying to always get a perfect mix but a decent mix with variety, can't always get everything where I am and neither can they in the wild. Always forget my two beautiful macaws come from the wild and are not a domesticated dog that has evolved to live in humanities company.
Still yet to make your dry mix but my second addition has been quite the effort since I got him less than a week ago, can't wait to see how they react to that dry mix in their diet.

Absolutely love this video. I have really been concerned about variety and what is best for my Macaws. They have a great, healthy diet. I worry is it enough ? Are they getting everything they need ? Am I feeding too much ? Too little ? I try to switch things up a bit. Thank you, so much !! ❤️ Millie and Cadbury thank you too ( Macaws )

I have 2 5 year old budgies because their previous owner died and want to make sure they get a perfect life!
The animal shop just gave me a bag of millets and said it would be enout to just feed that 1 seed...
But since i didnt had any time to research because these two came to me without food it was that bag.
Now im already trying to give them sprouded seeds, they both love apple but are still sceptical of every other vegteble i give them xD
This video has helped me a lot, especially with the pellets because i have heared a lot that you SHOULD be feeding them

I have a great example for birds that are closely related but eat quite a different diet ! I own 2 dove species, not far away genetically. Their wing feathers are even almost identical, one is just slightly larger. They live in habitats next to each other in africa. But one needs a high amount of explicitly oily seeds to stay on a healthy weight, but if they just get a drop too much protein go completely insane, other than that they will eat or try almost every kinda food.
The other eats almost just seeds, but is very picky when it comes to quality or what exact types of seed ( they don't even like all kinds of millet...) like they would rather starve than eat the seeds they don't like, they get offered the same ingredients as the other doves but eat just...what they eat. Such a different food behaviour. But both species are in a very good state right now, perfect plumage, not a feather sitting wrong.

Great video!! This was incredibly informative. It’s never made since to completely eliminate seeds or fruit, because wild birds eat them. My sun conure’s diet consists of TOPS pellets, which I dislike because it creates so much dust, veggie chop with a sprinkle of chia seeds & a blueberry. She gets nuts during daily indoor flight & trick training but I don’t know what to include in a dry mix. Would a dry mix be dry oats & sprouted legumes? He mentioned soaking quinoa, is this considered a dry ingredient? Also, did he have an opinion on freezing your bird’s chop? I don’t because it looks unappealing but it would be more economical. I’m definitely going to join the FB group! Thank you.

My dog was already getting the best food from nutro. Thanks to ur last video about changing from pallets to better food. Ive changes my rabbits guinypigs and hamsters food to better pallets. No more soy or grains. As ive noticed myself that my dog and i are doing better without msg and on paloe diet.

@@MikeyTheMacaw Yes nice, I saw. This was a terrific video and I do like TOPs.
I was just inquiring about the Feed Your Flock pellets that Birdtricks developed because it is also cold pressed and only contains whole natural ingredients versus any synthetics etc. They seem to essentially be an alternative/ same idea as TOPs. I was just wondering if Doc was familiar with the FYF pellet/ what he thought since cold pressed pellets with pure ingredients are such a rarity.
I feed that and the Birdtricks seasonal feeding system along with their sprouts.
I also bought the Shelby Mix and Sprout Bag for even more variety/ since you and Birdtricks both seem to have avian nutritionists, veterinarians, and evolving dietary information at the forefront of these feeding options.

For more inexperienced owners, when he says "if they finish all of it add a little more than a tablespoon" he doesnt mean if they finish every single last seed, like theyre easy to miss and you dont want a starving baby, if over 90% is finished, adding a bit more won't kill them. Accidentally starving them however (like i did cus i only stuck to a tablespoon cus no one said heaping or add more if they finish it) will cause serious health issues if not death. Especially if it's a small high energy bird
For birds that eat that often, its better to have a tiny but too much than a tiny bit too little.
Your parrot wont overeat until it bursts, it stops when it is full, if your parrot is ravenous or desperate for food, it's starved right now
Don't repeat my mistake OTL 💗
