Yup, the scene when they are examining Ben Gardner’s beat-up fishing boat, and Hooper pulls a shark tooth the size of a shot glass out of the hole in the hull -- just as Ben Gardner’s mutilated head suddenly appears -- is one of the greatest jump-scares of all time!

Remarkably, Quint’s speech about the sinking of the USS Indianapolis is a historical fact. It really happened! His vivid description of the tragedy that resulted is one of the most epic monologues in cinematic history, and is the key to his character and his obsession with killing sharks. He smashed the radio not only because he wanted to secure the bounty and reward for killing the Great White, which is strictly a secondary consideration for him, but rather because he wanted revenge - or perhaps personal redemption - for his horrific experience, which he can only achieve by killing the man-eating shark himself.

It is a true story, to some degree. The shark attack bit is a bit overplayed. The vast majority of sailors died to hydration, injuries etc. I'm in Indianapolis and we have a big memorial of it downtown, always a fascinating, heartbreaking story.

One of the two boys with the fake shark fin is now the Police Chief of Oak Bluffs, which was Amity Island in Jaws.
Quint - "Back home we got a taxidermy man. He gonna have a heart attack when he see what I brung him. Ha, ha, ha, ha"
"Several decades after the film's release, Lee Fierro walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed an "Alex Kintner Sandwich" on the menu. She commented that she had played his mother many years ago. Jeffrey Voorhees, owner of the restaurant, ran out to meet her. He had played her son, and they hadn't seen each other since the original movie shoot."
Quint's monologue about the U.S.S. Indianapolis is based on true events.

Brody was looking at his appendix surgery scar. Back then it was a common procedure to remove the appendix if there were any related health issues.
Quint's USS Indianapolis monologue was based on the worst mass animal attack in history. Quint blamed all the deaths on the sharks which wasn't true, but we can excuse that because of the PTSD Quint had suffered from it. It was that PTSD which gave Quint his obsession for hunting sharks. Quint lived for revenge on all sharks and Jaws would have been his largest trophy.
Brody had been frustrating Quint repeatedly by wanting to call for help on the radio. This could destroy Quint's reputation as "the shark hunter who needed help". Since Quint felt he lived through far worse without a radio, he was fine with destroying it. It was only when Jaws took down 3 barrels did Quint first realize he was in over his head.

Sharks generally don't go for humans. They get us confused with prey like seals. They take a bite, realise you're not a seal, then go away......unfortunately, that one bite can take your leg off. Some sharks are more aggressive that others. This movie was kinda singlehandedly responsible to creating the perception that sharks are monsters. A lot of wildlife experts have been pushing back against that since 1975.

There is a good example of foreshadowing in this movie that everyone seems to miss: when Chief Brody is looking through books about sharks, researching the subject, while thumbing through the books, he comes across a photo of a giant shark with a compressed air tank from a diver in its mouth. Of course, this comes full circle at the end of the movie when Brody destroys the shark by shooting the compressed air tank in its jaws. I am always surprised that no one ever points that out; it seems like such an obvious oversight to me…

The film is an absolute masterpiece of suspense and subtle character moments and beats (like the hint that Brody was attacked by something in the water). Sadly, far too many people took the 'sharks are evil man-eaters' as the message of the movie, and it led to a lot of fear and killing/culling of sharks. Really, the movie is about humans vs. nature and how different people react to nature and to things beyond their control happening. You get ignoring/minimizing (the mayor), fear (Brody), curiosity (Hooper), and anger (Quint). In many ways the shark itself is just the impersonal stand in for nature and things beyond human control.
The 'man-eater' shark is a myth, when humans are in the water with sharks (the shark's natural environment, not ours) there is of course always a risk of a bite, but that is frequently a young shark that gets confused due to various factors. There has only been one, confirmed, incidence of a single shark attacking more than one person. We don't taste very good to sharks and we have a poor amount of fat and muscle for our size, so it isn't exactly worth it for them, which is why it is usually young sharks with factors that made them confused. Incidents like the Indianapolis are a little different, as that was a large number of humans in a small area in the middle of the ocean were food is overall more scarce, with smaller sharks that are more prone to eat just about anything they can get, and things closer to our size. The famed oceanographer Jacques Cousteau described those sharks, the Oceanic White Tip sharks, as by far the most dangerous species of shark.

    • @lyndoncmp5751

Im afraid that's become a myth, based on the skewed and exaggerated documentaries. The shark was actually not scheduled to be used for the first half of the film. The beach attack scenes were filmed early, in May and June 1974 in shallow water. Impossible to use Bruce. Spielberg kept the shark hidden by design. He was already a suspense director, as Duel and Something Evil shows.
The mechanical shark/s were never scheduled to be used for any scenes until filming moved out to sea for the Orca based scenes. That's when it kept malfunctioning, all through July and August and into September.
They had a perfectly good working fin contraption that they could have used throughout, but Spielberg didnt even want to show the fins until the pond scene. Later at the end of location shooting in September they filmed an insert shot of Bruce taking the Kintner dummy on the raft but even that shot, done by Joe Alves after Spielberg had already left Martha's Vineyard, showed more than intended. Alves wanted more sunshine obscuring Bruce but by the time the shot was ready the sun had moved and the shot wasn't as Alves intended. They did use it though.
The first shark moment filmed on Martha's Vineyard was the holiday roast/pier scene with a completely and deliberately unseen shark. This was filmed in May 1974. At that time they didnt even KNOW that Bruce wouldn't work. Bruce was only tested in the salt water for the first time in mid June, after some shark moments had already been filmed.
More details can be found in The Jaws Log by Carl Gottlieb and Jaws Memories From Martha's Vineyard by Matt Taylor.
      Cheers.

Has anyone stopped to consider that Jaws is one of the most tragic love stories in the movies? Here you have a shark of of nature's greatest sea animals. This shark loves the island and it's inhabitants so much that he tries to get the tourists to leave. He just wanted them to have their peaceful island back. It was his gift to them. But the evil greedy mayor wanted these tourists anyway so he and his cronies could make money at the expense of the locals. This villainous tyrant ordered Jaws to be hunted down and killed. What was his crime you ask. It was his love for his neighbors that he sacrificed himself. Such a tragic story

Carol, it gets really cold 🥶 in Canada right. Imagine you couldn't have any income. How are you going to heat your home, feed your family, pay your mortgage? You might even lose your home now imagine you have young children or that you are elderly. It gets cold there too. How many people will die if they shut down the beaches the only revenue those people have for a whole year.

True, it was the mayor's fault, but Brody could have pushed it until he got fired. It that hadn't made news enough and the boy got killed anyway, the following stink may have prevented the third and fourth victim.

Everybody who watches this movie hates the mayor.
    Here's a couple thoughts:
    1. In real life, sharks don't do this. A shark feeds, then swims away. There's really no chance that the first girl, Chrissy, and the boy, Alex, were killed by the same shark since Chrissy's shark would be a hundred miles away by the time Alex Kintner died.
    2. This is a summer town that makes all their money during the summer. Closing the beaches means half the businesses go bankrupt and half the town's people go on welfare or move away. Quint even said so, right after he did the fingernails on the chalkboard scene: he said "pay up, Chief, or the whole town will be on welfare this winter." Nobody objected, they all know it's true.
Given those two points, the mayor would be an idiot to close the beaches.
Real mayors don't close real beaches after a shark attack. Occasionally, for just a few hours, to give the shark time to swim away. But that's it, and most of them don't do that too, because of the final point:
    3. Sharks don't kill people or even bite people on purpose. If a person gets bit, it's because the shark made a mistake and it won't make it twice. So the BEST time to go into the water is right after a shark bites somebody else. That shark won't bite anybody ever again.
Not sure about that third point?
250 million Americans go to U.S. beaches every year. About 50 of them get bit each year, and just 2-3 of those, on average, die from sharkbite.
Also, just search for videos of great white sharks swimming with humans. You'll find hundreds of videos showing thousands of sharks around tens of thousands of humans, and nobody getting bit.
"Interesting that the mayor isn't going in the water. I wonder why?"
Maybe because he's being a politician.
He's talking to reporters, shaking hands, making promises.
He's using this crowd to DO HIS JOB.

Hay I live in a beach town, all they needed to do was to stay out of the water for a while, people can still spend money and lay on the beach just don’t go into the water for a little while. It’s been done and nobody looses money or their holiday.
Remember in THIS MOVIE it’s a killer shark that people are reacting to, sharks don’t do that, to that extent, they just get confused on what you are in the water. The mayor pissed me off when he made that family go into the water. Everyone is still spending money. 😣

Everyone think Spielberg made such a gear choice saying do long to reveal the shark. The truth his, the mechanical shark caused several problems and the first sank yo the bottom of the ocean as soon as they put it in and they needed to build another. This was only Spielberg’s 2nd film, and he didn’t want any delays in what was already turning into a difficult shoot, so he shot around nor having a shark.

Cheers.
