Josh and Kalie from ExpatsEverywhere have moved to Portugal and have been waiting to finalize their residency with their SEF appointments. Due to Covid, the appointments have been backed so they have been waiting three months for their turn. They finally are able to go. This quick video shows them on their way but be sure to catch the live Q&A to hear how it went and to ask questions!

@@kameelaheverglow Thanks 🙏 Congrats for safely arriving in Lisbon. We should be there right now, but covid and the regulations meant that we had to stay put in Porto. It's all good. I've been waiting for my SEF interview for 2 years now. They have recently canceled all appointments and the only instruction is to wait for them to get back to us. SEF is inefficient, bureaucratic, and is definitely the worse obstacle that we have to go through while trying to live and pay taxes in Portugal.
Sorry to hear that, Jose. We've had some people have a somewhat smooth experience like us and others that have had theirs cancelled like you. Just curious, why the 2 year wait or is this for the 2 year check-in appointment? - Josh & Kalie
@@ExpatsEverywhere I gotta say bad luck, I guess. My family and I (Me, my wife, and 3 kids) got here in June 2019, SEF took months just to accept the documentation we sent, and only after that, we could set our first appointment in Dec 2019. The closest date was June 2020, however, it got canceled and there was no way to make a new appointment at that time. The only option was to wait. So in September 2020, we were able to schedule it for March 15th, 2021. A couple of days before that date, my wife and I've got an email saying that due to the Covid situation our interview would be postponed and we should wait for a contact from SEF. Nothing else we can do, again.
Now, I'm not sure if all this has to do with the fact that I'm from Brazil or I'm really outta luck. What I do know is that we lived in the United States for almost 10 years (My baby girl was born in Florida, she's 6 now) and while immigration processes do take long, it should never take this long. Even in Brazil, the bureaucracy is more reasonable than what it is here.

@@lindywallace9540 "no" in Portuguese in this context is like "on" or "in". You're thinking of the word "não", which means "no" in English. It's a very common mistake when reading. - Josh & Kalie

Hi Y Everett, you should see the link now in the video description section. The link should have also popped up at the end of the video for you to click on. Please let us know if you don't see it. We addressed your question in the Q&A. We had a 12-month lease, however, it wasn't scrutinized one way or another. It was just scanned and placed in our e-file. - Josh & Kalie

Hi Josh and Kalie, how did you manage to secure an appointment? We have been trying for many months now after having our Apr 2020 appointment cancelled and we have not been able to get another appointment. (We are not currently in Portugal).

Hey Gina, they've actually hit pause on the appointments because of Covid. They're only taking critical appointments. We got in about a week before it all changed.

SEF residency appointment was given to us when we got our visas and that date never changed.
When we applied for our D7 visas our jurisdiction (DC) wasn’t required to have an in person appointment so we just sent off our application by mail and waited.

@@ExpatsEverywhere we are probably a year or so out. We are most likely going to rent for a year to be sure of the move before we sell our Florida home and purchase there.

Do not wear a suit!!! 😂 It is not that formal at all. You might want to make sure you have your hair and face on because they will take your photo from the shoulders up. Let us know how your appointment goes. Where are you living btw? - Josh & Kalie
Philadelphia. We’re going through the process now in anticipation of retirement. Had an appointment next week that was cancelled due to lockdown; hoping it’ll be rescheduled for April/May. Your videos are great ... and super helpful. Thanks. Ron

You're on it, Rebecca! Super Chat is a little button on the chat box. It should be near the bottom left I think. You'll see a couple icons and if you hover over them, it'll say what they are. 😁 Using Super Chat isn't obligatory at all to get your question answered, but it'll pin the chat to the top of the chat box for a certain amount of time and stand out so we can make sure we answer it.
