Thorfin, slowly learning the values his father wanted to teach him is truly endearing, but the shadows of war looms and it seems to draw closer with each episode.
For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode adapted the entirety of chapters 66 to 67. In regards to the passage of time (the manga is more explicit about the dates) during this episode it’s supposed to be November 1015, so about a month has passed since the previous episode. A bit of historical trivia for those interested, for Scandinavian farming families during the Viking age, the custom was for eldest sons to be sent off to war while the younger sons would inherit the farming lands. Hence why Ketil cares about Olmar inheriting the farm, and not Thorgil. Arnheid being a comfort-woman/sex-slave to Ketil was also relatively easy to guess when she originally first introduced herself in episode 3 as Ketil’s “personal attendant”. And yeah, the fact that Ketil is so attached to her definitely implies that she likely has no option to buy her freedom, and likely expects to be a slave for life. Also if ones can recall, even Einar was eyed by potential buyers as a sex-slave in episode 1 (though it was more explicit in the manga where the potential buyer even grabbed Einar’s junk as part of the “inspection process”). This series also does a good job of depicting how the harsh social mores and norms of the time existed and why they existed (that even despite the harshness they also weren’t completely arbitrary in their existence). Hence, why even Pater and Snake were insistent on the children receiving a form of corporal punishment, so they would avoid having the stigma “unpunished thief” permanently attached to them.
Kinda glad that the anime soften the blow on how harsh the boy were punished and how explicitly desensitized Arnheid is being on the same bed with Ketil knowing very well she'll never have her freedom. These few chapters on the manga without over excess on explicit violence or sex somehow got me more fucked up than many "shocking" scenes in other shows or manga. It brings back to gramps saying Ketil is too weak to have all the lands and power because he can't even handle his own savage son. He is kind but cowardly, how does he expect to gain respect from savages when he barely able to command his own people? If warmonger Thorkell or Askeladd cunning viking type pull up to the land his farm is simply done
@@lurkingposter honestly I dunno. I reread the chapter after I watched it but somehow her expression + she's being naked somehow more highlighted? And the beating scene just felt more brutal. It's not a critic on the anime, I really don't want to feel that uncomfortable again. But most importantly it really hits home how much a coward Ketil is tho
The second that Thorgil wanted to beat the boy, I was pleading on his behalf, like, “Master, please! Anybody but him. He just a boy. He got so much more life to live, but he won’t have none if you let Thorgil do what he please.”
Oh just for reference 'things' were gatherings of nobles/warriors/adult men. Basically annual or semi-annual "hey here's whats been happening" and also where people might decide to air grievances, etc.
I like how they showed how farming leads to organized religion. Hunters can rely, to an extent, on their own skills. Farming requires skill too, but there's much more risk of random natural events even if you do everything right, particularly before they have weather forecasts and fertilizers and so on.... so trust in god....

How was it softened? The only change compared to the manga was Arnied had a shirt on.

The way they pray was funny 😂
