  • A Texas 6-year-old boy was blasted in the face by a gunshot as he walked into his bedroom Thursday evening when a stray bullet fired from an adjacent apartment tore through the wall and mortally wounded him, police said.
The 6 year-old, Jairo Ivan Victoriano, was flown from the Laguna Del Sol Apartments southwest of Houston to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead, sending relatives and members of the apartment complex reeling.
This is the third child in Harris County who has been shot and killed due to improper use of firearms.
When the mom came to the room, she found him there bleeding, "Blood (was) all over his body and he was just (lying) there unconscious already."
Five people - two men and three juveniles - in the adjacent apartment had their hands swabbed and covered with bags before they were cuffed and taken into custody for questioning.
Scenes of grief played out from the parking lot of the complex along Sierra Blanca, as an uncle of the deceased boy hugged his 3-year-old son tight as they mourned the senseless loss of their 6-year-old relative.
"It's really disgraceful what just happened," Saldanas told the news station. "You can't be playing with lethal weapons knowing there are thousands of kids in these apartments."
It’s just the latest of several gun-involved tragedies in Harris County, which encompasses Houston and its suburbs. A 6-year-old boy was critically hurt when he was shot by his 5-year-old brother earlier this month at their home in Sheldon. Just days before a 3-year-old died after finding a loaded gun in a purse, while a 4-year-old also was killed after finding a handgun under a bed in another Harris County home.
Harris County Sheriff’s deputies pushed parents to use gun locks after the spate of unintentional violence.
