    I understand how to transfer or even freehand my design onto wood backing, but I have been wanting to try the lightweight skeewbacker for a wall hanging portrait of a friend. Have you ever used it? Is it as simple as wood to draw my pattern?

    • @HelenMilesMosaics
      @HelenMilesMosaics  Рік тому

      Do you mean what I would call Wedi board or Jackoboard? The compressed foam board? Skeewbacker might be a manufacturer's name and we might have a different name for it in the UK, but to answer your question, no I've never used it but I dont see any reason why it wouldn't be easy to transfer your design onto it.

    Hello Hellen. I've mounted a cleat hanging system to the back of my wediboard and will be glueing Winklemans and vitreous glass directly onto the board. Should I cover the metal fixings with anything or can the tiles be glued straight onto the washers? Thanks for your great tutorials they are a tremendous help to me as a beginner, just getting started

    • @HelenMilesMosaics

      Apologies for the late reply - I haven't been receiving notifications about comments so have only just noticed your comment now. Yes, the tiles can be glued straight onto the washers. I'm glad the videos are helpful! 😀

    Hi Helen, I am watching all your videos and am absolutely loving them.
    I am planning on coating a future swimming pool (a small one) completely in mosaic tiles and figures. It will take a long time for sure, but I was wondering if you would recommend the tide bond wood glue as well in such a case. I checked and you used a number 2 and they have a number 3 as well which is water-resistant. Also, I was wondering if using a glass fiber mesh is also applicable in such a case.

    • @HelenMilesMosaics
      @HelenMilesMosaics  2 роки тому +2

      Hi there. I havent used Titebond for underwater so I really can't advise you on whether it would be suitable. I would recommend that you contact the manufacturer and ask them directly - they are usually super helpful and it's better to be safe than sorry! As for glass fiber mesh, I wouldn't recommend it for something like this as it acts as a layer between the substrate (in your case the sides of the pool) and the mosaic. It's a great option for many other applications but for a pool you want maximum adhesion so I would use the paper backed method. I haven't done a video on that method yet but I am sure you will find something if you Google it. The advantages of the paper backed method is that the result is a super smooth surface. Hope that helps!

    Hi !
    Wat is your suggestion if i use rattan cutouts in making my mosaic project?
    I have many ideas, but i dont know how to start, never been did this beutiful creation.
    Than k you!

    • @HelenMilesMosaics
      @HelenMilesMosaics  2 роки тому

      I have never thought of using rattan before but I would suggest using a strong and thick glue like silicone. It would probably work well because you can buy the transparent version which won't spoil the rattan but will hold it firmly in place.

    Thanks helen. That title bond glue for inside and outside is good to glue mosaics that will be outdoors right? It’s water proof?

    What is the main ingredients for both glue types? And the difference between both? I guess that using the water resistant glue is better, by the way can I use natural silicone glue (acid free)

    • @HelenMilesMosaics
      @HelenMilesMosaics  4 місяці тому

      Both PVA and wood glue are polyvinyl acetates which is where the name PVA comes from but the wood glue has other ingredients added to make it stronger. Sadly neither are the slightest bit natural but neither of them are acidic either. I have never used silicone but I keep meaning to try.

    We are doing mosaics at school this week. What glue would you recommend for students to glue to already lready glazed ceramics (dinner plates/bowls) or glass (picture frame?)

    • @HelenMilesMosaics
      @HelenMilesMosaics  2 роки тому

      It really depends how old your students are. The best glue for crockery is tile adhesive, otherwise known as thinset, which is the stuff you buy in a powder form in bags from the hardware shop to fix tiles to the bathroom wall. It's very strong and you make a paste by mixing with water according to the manufacturer's instructions and then press the ceramics into it. However, it's really messy so the kids need to be a bit older.

      @@HelenMilesMosaics We have high schoolers doing this. We ended up using Epoxy 6000., recommended by several sites but simply the most easily accessible thing in our city. I found a grout we are going to use with a 3 to 1 ratio (in favor of the powder) and I worry we'll run out quick. It was $25 for a small quart or pint of the powder! Where would you recommend getting more?

    • @HelenMilesMosaics
      @HelenMilesMosaics  2 роки тому

      @@saritabills5245 Thanks for this. I am not sure what you are using that requires a 3 to 1 ratio. I buy my grout as a powder and simply add water without any ratios being involved. If you are working on a large area and need to keep costs down, then you are best using thinset - an adhesive used for attaching tiles to the walls, also sold in a powder form and it comes in big sacks of 20 kilos.

    I want to start with a mosaic glass mirror. That wouldn't work with the glues you are presenting here as they are for absorbent substrates, would it?

    • @HelenMilesMosaics
      @HelenMilesMosaics  4 місяці тому +1

      Hi. You mean that you would mosaic directly onto the glass? In that case you would need to glue with a transparent silicone glue.

    Does this glue come in Clear?

    • @HelenMilesMosaics
      @HelenMilesMosaics  2 роки тому

      Not as far as I know but with any glue that you use with mosaics you have to be careful not to get it on the surface of the tiles. Even if you use clear glue and it can't be seen once it's dry, as soon as you grout the piece the glue will show up and look messy.

    ok so we don’t want the tiles touching then?

    • @HelenMilesMosaics
      @HelenMilesMosaics  5 місяців тому

      No, there should be spaces between them. That's the beauty of mosaic - the gaps are as much part of the design as the materials. I've done a video about spacing: ua-cam.com/video/QEjr37BQXPY/v-deo.html
